in todays world 1% of 7 billion would be 70 million people dead. However I have heard of epidemiological data that said that the death rate could have been as high as 3%.
On another note of the people that have gotten bird flu, over 50% have died.
My great great grandfather died from this epidemic no joke,my grandpa once told me that his dad never really knew his dad because he died of influenza before he was born
Called Spanish Flu because the Spanish newspapers weren't censored and so could report on it. One theory is that it was actually brought to Europe by an American soldier.

i wonder what would happen if someone know got the spanish influnzia would we have anough Scientists who have anough Education to find a cure or would we have another giant death wave thing like wat happened than? i wonder wat it would have been like to go throw that
It wasn't the "flu." Rather it was the concoction of vaccines given to our troops. Youtube won't let you post a link, but google "1918 flu caused by vaccines"
My late father who died in 1999 (at 83 years old) told me all about this. He was 2 years old and his 29 year old father (my grandfather) died of this. My dad, his 3 year old sister and mother were left penniless, broke and homeless as the bread winner of the family had died. A sympathetic uncle took them in. My dad had to start working at 12 years old to help bring in money for his mom. This flu affected millions of people in many ways.
@inkey2 - It's interesting to read the old newspapers of that era. They tracked the flu as it spread across the US. In my area one couple that were married only a month died within 2 days of each other. Churches were closed, funerals banned, schools closed for a month. Coffins piled up waiting for burial.
@TheMasturRater : another thing that happened .....my ancestors on my dads side lived in Boston during this pandemic....like many poor, working class people (poor folks of irish descent) they lived in cramped quarters with many people in one house. 2 relatives w/in 2 weeks died in that house. I can just imagine the terror of everyone thinking they will be next.
@rapiddominace : here is what I have read....I am not disputing what you say....just offering this up for interesting conversation. I read, or saw a clip....can't remember which.....that the flu started in a resort town in spain and thus called the spanish flu
