  • I heared Bill on the John Peel show. Alas I forgot about about it (shame). a friend who worked in the Brunswick Centre record shop played me 'Like an old blues' off of the 'Sunburst Finish' LP.

What a f*cking brilliant album, and after 35 years, it is still my favourite all time LP.

There should be a statue to Bill, and he should have had a Knighthood for services to music, and making people chill.

Happy New Year Bill. Peace and Love.

  • What an ending to such a fantab shared link with me. The Masterful voicing of the guitars 1:23 and all through is just magical----> Love tramcars; this one looks like what I understand is a Bogie truck. (?) (Would love to ride on the top and have this tune in my ear) The Lyrics as you listen makes you feel you are Riding the streets in Yorkshire experiencing. Just magnificent Gem of a shared Masters. :-)

  • Great night at Bracknell with Cockney Rebel

  • Excellent solo as usual, on eevry new version I hear of this track he just seems to exceed his previous efforts. Brilliant!

  • Yeah we saw them play at the Duke of Cumberland in North Ferriby with my girlfreind at the time who was Goth i am sure copied some heavy eye makeup lol . BBD and Axe Victim was bown away by Punk along with my girlfreind but still have all the vinyl and 45 hot valves - great days

  • The most beatiful guitar solo ever. More than a hint of Vaughan Williams in it.

  • Which came first - Summer Breeze by the Isleys or this? If you love one you've got to love the other it would seem to me. Both solos come from the same place.

  • when I got Axe Victim in 74 and saw their picture They looked like they were into the Glam Rock scene. Saw them LIVE in 75 and Bill is wearing a three piece suit. I wonder if he ever jammed with Bowie?

  • Legend !!

  • I love Bill Nelson. This song is probably my favorite on Axe Victim.

  • thanks, just thanks....this is absolutely wonderful-

  • saw Bill do this live at the grand theatre leeds totally awsome a true guitar legend

  • To anyone that knows their 70s guitar music - don't the very last 3 or 4 notes sound like they're straight off Black Sabbath's first album (Tony Iommi)

  • A different live version to the one on Live in the Air Age. Such lyrical, beautiful phrasing. How is this man not worshipped and idolised?

  • @45spear he is by some, u heard of 'Nelsonica'?

  • @45spear Bill Nelson has that big, beatiful tone but he also has, as you put it, "such lyrical, beautiful phrasing". The pillow of acoustic guitars here is really nice here, too.

  • Bill is more than underrated! Go over here, Bill plays here with Takahashi in 1983, guitar work here is stunning and its absolute perfect... youtube.com/watch?v=q52NPLhokv4&feature=related

  • beautiful......simply timeless still makes the hair on the back of neck stand up after 30 years + thank you Bill

  • That's just fantastic! I love Bill Nelson.

  • Some sections in this song he sounds a little like early Roy Harper , the vocals, not the guitar. Good stuff, thanks for posting it. Thumbs up.

  • i am surprised how much his playing sounded like mclaughlin or vice versa

  • Fantastic playing by Bill and to think some jls fan actually gave it a thumbs down the mind boggles. This is sheer perfection people

  • One of the most lyrical guitarists ever - Mr Bill Nelson...

This is from an era when speed and technique were not the goal, but telling a story and creating a mood with a guitar solo - remarkable! Brilliant solo!!

Listen to the solo he does on the same tune on Axe Victim totally different notes, but the same mood.

  • My first ever gig was Be-Bop Deluxe at the Colston Hall Bristol in '76, first ever gig, favourite ever band, favourite ever solo, pure clarion. Modern players all sound the same, same lessons, same sound. The old players are the best, self taught, different techniques and different sounds. Bill is up there with Hendrix and Frank Marino, different but equal. To quote the late great Bill Hicks, "Play from your fucking heart"

  • @vmax4steve Wel said

  • thanks for the upload, takes me back. Great version. Axe Victim remains in my couple of all time albums. Guitar simply wasnt played like this in the 70's. Bill and Jan Akkerman raised the bar big time.

  • one of the best guitar solos ever....

  • Best version of this song ever, even better than Live in the air age which is saying alot, !!!!! this song could go on for five more minutes and I wouldn't mind

  • Saw a BBD show in1977(?) at the Shrine in Los Angeles. BN...the under appreciated ax genius? Time knows no limits for days such as these...

  • if this band isn't in your top ten of all favourate bands then..........

  • great guitarist

  • This is a brilliant pairing down of this track.. by which I mean little or no keyboards. Nothing wrong with the 'Air Age' version with keys mind! Instead this Peel session has an acoustic rhythm guitar...and a superb solo even by Bill Nelson standards. Gonna have to buy this cd, tingles down spine at this shi!t

  • This is very intelligent music

  • This is music is written into the annals of Great British Rock Forever................Keep Rockin' Young William........

  • He's some boy that Bill.

  • Bill Nelson and Andrew Latimer are the most underrated guitars of British 70`s Rock, definitely... Take care, God bless... H.

  • I'm going to do a backing track of this song for my pupils to play to, and because this was in my mind I stumbled across this... lovely stuff! I'd truly forgotten how much of an influence Bill Nelson was on my own playing (particularly the whole Axe Victom album - played over that for HOURS when I was a kid!)

    Choice!

  • First saw Be Bop Deluxe supporting Cockney Rebel at Leeds town hall...now thats what ya call a night out...always try catch Bill Nelson when hes in town even if his music now is a tad indulgent...

    Glenn

  • i was there too bought axe victim next day, must of seen them 50 times over the years, simply superb. also seen sunburst deluxe at the new roscoe in leeds (tribute band) they were awsome too.

  • Virtuoso guitar work par excellence :)

  • I saw bebop in the corn exchange in Cambridge for 2 pounds 50 p as a 16 years old Futurama tour. unbelievable doesn't start to describe the evening of musical brilliance.

  • Awesome! Loved this band in its heyday,I've still got Live! In the Air Age & a record player!!!! Visionary is how I would describe Bill Nelson. The Red Noise stuff was well different at the time. Thanks for posting this.

  • I'm lucky enouh to own the Hoyer Les Paul guitar Bill is pictured with on the rear cover of the Axe Victim Album and was blown away when during his 30th anniversary tour he signed it for me,One of the best guitaists ever from the U.K and a modest smashing guy aswell, nuff said.

  • This is so beautiful, brings tears to my eyes. I love the depth of sound Bill gets - he's my idol

  • all you bill nelson fans know he has his own signature guitar right? he designed it with campbell american guitars. i got the chance to meet him at a guitar store during its debut

  • you simply cant understand what effect this axe victim album had on a young 15 year old starting out on a long long guitar playing road. This playing made me do it. Thanks for all the inspiration Bill.

  • God save Bill Nelson forever! He is a comet on the Earth

  • God bless Carsbro amps

  • A genius at work.

  • Summer Breeze makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind

  • I never made the connection at the time, but yes, one thing follows another...

  • wow bill is an amazing techanically sound guitarist isnt he

  • Details guys, no one come close bills guitar works, he is an tru genus........Details.....

  • ps has anyone got the bbc look north stuff from the same period 77/78 They did a live version of crying to the sky that would bring you to your knees had it on early Philips VCR format

  • saw this live! 1977 and 78 Bradford, boy can this guy play, also saw him Leeds warehouse playing the red noise stuff. Also had the pleasure to meet him in waterstones leeds what a humble nice guy, just wish I'd met Mick Ronson as well

  • Saw BBD @ academy of musick NYC; circa DRASTIC PLASTIC ['79-80]. This remains my favourite song along w/ MODERN MUSICK. Remember the white vinyl in 'LIFE IN THE AIR AGE'? An amazing live YORKSHIRE on that one. A true genius. Heard he's a nice guy as well.

  • I have been a fan for a long time , but I've never heard this beautiful version 'til tonite ! Thanks for posting !

  • I recall Bill often used to be found hanging around the 'Record Bar' in Wakefield; I roadied for former Bebop bass player Rob Bryan's band, Rudy & the Zipps in the 70s.

  • "The Record Bar" in Wakefield, that brings back some memories...

  • This version is much more melodic than

Live in the air age, that is a great version but don't forget the keyboard solo, this one is all guitar which is what I Like....

  • and that is a lesson on how a guitar should be played best band of all time. thanks BBD

  • The best guitarist ever. He is in to wierd stuff these days.

  • He's a genius. He does everything from ambient, to jazz, electronica and so on. His new stuff is just as good as his old.

  • Summer breeze makes me feel fine blowing through the jasmine.........

  • Bills is a poet on guitar.

    Stunning.

  • Does anyone know what Bill Nelson is doing theses days - assuming he's still alive!

The music of this band is just astounding

  • Bill made some records every year, he create always new styles of sound and the guitar is still amazing, buy Whimsy, one of his best ever, Whimsy is very complex, Bill made here new directions to make music, the guitar works on this album is just haven..

  • Soooooounderrated!!...the best!!

  • First timers, make sure you wait for the solo, the you will understand. Magnificent.

  • havent heard this for years- but still as wonderful as i remember.. Bill nelson is an absolute genius

  • This is great~! But the best version is on the double live album entitled "Live In The Air Age" I wish someone would post that one also.

  • i need to hear the bbc version god i love this song

  • Absolutely agree with pilyto21 re: the "Live in the Air Age" version----that is one truly magical performance !!!!! I feel blessed by being able to see BeBop twice (once on a tour with Renaissance !!!) Bill and the band were so awesome !!!! Lotta fun on stage, connecting with the audience----waaaaaaay underrated ! Peace:-)

  • I remember that album. Great stuff !! They printed it on the white vinyl too.

  • Too bad there is no tab for this wonderful solo to be found.....It must be my #1. this version of the song is not even the best

  • Not people may know this, but Randy Rhoads mentioned being influenced by Bill Nelson. I can see how and I'm glad I've discovered him as well.

  • Bill Nelson is absolutley stunning! I've never heard anyone make a guitar sing the way he does! The first band I ever saw live and I'll never forget seeing them. One of my favourite tracks. Outstanding!

  • Totally, totally, under estimated. Bill Nelson was, and still is a brilliant. Viva Bill and viva Be-Bop, they were a part of my childhood, many, many great memories.

  • Agree with all the comments on here - Bill Nelson is one of the great unsung heroes of British rock in the 70s.

  • The live version on "Axe Victim" is absolutely stunning, tops this one by a margin ;)

    Excellent guitarist.

  • Melodic is the word for his solos. anyone can play fast but to have a beautiful lyric or melody to your play is unique, Bill Nelson is UNIQUE.

  • As 58LP says the Live in the Air Age version is top. This comes a close second though. Such lyrical solos! This man inspired me to pick a guitar up and play.

  • I absolutely love this song. So many memories, so influential

  • moast exelent song

  • This is finally on Youtube! One of the most beautiful songs.

  • stunning(but very underated)guitarist, there's an even better version of this track(just my opinion) from 'live in the air age' if anyone can post it up really appreciate it.

  • excellent version!!!!

    MLC

  • Axe Victim Rules

  • Bills Guitar is so good , seen them back in 76 in the Caird Hall in Dundee, I just think their music is timeless.

  • a crackin bit of guitar playin' there

  • fantastic!!!bill nelson-one of the most underated guitarists of the time.
