  • What other software can this run?

  • @DJMojoJAB this doesn't run software. The computer runs the software. This is a MIDI controller, which will work with any software that's MIDI compatible.

  • i dont see the update where is it at??

  • i got the vms2 i cant get it to work i hate it it suck i do not recomend the vms2 i dont know about the vms4 but the vms2 suck

  • @TheCokepower no need - VDJ LE is included, and you can upgrade to VDJ Pro for a reduced price.

  • Hi Groovindj

I had one of these and returned it within 2 days.

Apart from all of the problems that you've identified, I'd like to add:

    1. Low output volume.

    2. Distorted mic input.

    3. The pathetic rubber covers for the jog wheels to allow using them for pitchbending.

    4. You can't see the position of the knobs that are lit up unless you lean right over them.

The odd thing is that I bought a Radius 3000 (American Audio) to replace the VMS4 and have had no problems with that at all.

    Rick

  • @rickperryman hey Rick..i agree with ur comment man...and i wanna add that trying out the 4 decks..i get a VERY VERY distorted sound...i dont know if i dont do sth right...but the sound i get with 4 decks suks...if anyone has sth to suggest..please help...lol...But ok...i think the VMS4 has a good value for money and i m quite satisfied with it...otherwise...double the money and buy a DENON DMC 6000 or TRAKTOR S4...and i m not sure if these dont have issues either...

  • @mentoras8 you need to keep the levels lower than that suggested in the manual, because due to running from only 5v the audio has very little overhead 'safety zone'.

Apparently the major issues have been addressed in the new 'Traktor version' VMS4 - but they have raised the price.

  • awful hardware, awful software

  • @technicalerr0r awful comment

  • @groovindj overall would you recommend this for a half experienced dj :)?

  • @NumbaOneTunes please see all the previous replies that I've given to the same question before....

  • Great vid

  • Thanks

  • Sounds like u don't like it, I can't tell tho but overall did u like it or not?

  • @Th3Utuber I wasn't 100% happy with it, as I was expected better quality for the money - but the video contained my first impressions. After spending more time with it, and discovering other problems, I regret buying it now.

Buyers of this original model have basically acted as beta testers for American Audio, who have corrected all the issues in the forthcoming new VMS4 - but have done nothing for owners of the first version.

  • Quick question. I have the free home version of vdj and I am getting the vms4... Wat must I install before it comes and how much will it cost me so that everything works perfectly?

Really appreciate it if sm1 helps me!!:)

  • @mcrulez13 the VMS4 comes with VDJ LE in the box. It will work with the version in the box.

The Home version doesn't support MIDi controllers.

  • @groovindj Is the new version with traktor out yet?

  • @265CoJ Yes i got one today :D

  • pause, pause, pause .....

Great in the middle of the mix :D

  • make normal mixes...electro, house, techno...

  • @mrsimomoks ALL mixes are normal - not just the genres that YOU like!

  • man!!!why you dont capture video with your canon EOS??? 5:22 on the sofa ???

  • @mrsimomoks because it's bigger and heavier (harder to hold), it doesn't auto focus, the IS makes a buzzing noise in the mic - it's just quicker and easier with my Sanyo Xacti.

  • does it run good with a mac?

  • @kylebike128 I don't use Macs - but it's an external USB device, it doesn't care what OS you're running.

  • Can you use this controller with Traktor, or not?

  • @willem1777 it's a MIDI controller - you can use it with any software that supports MIDI controllers.

If you check the ADJ forums you will see that lots of people use it with Traktor.

Also, ADJ will be releasing a new improved version that ships with Traktor.

  • @groovindj Thanks for the quick response. I am totally new and don't know much about it, this will be my first DJ Controller, do you recommend this controller, or do advise me another controller. Furthermore, when will ADJ release the new version, I'm guessing that ADJ is American Audio? Sorry, I just don't know that much about it :$.

  • @willem1777 I would suggest waiting for the new version - I don't think they have given a release date.

  • @groovindj Oke, i think I will do that than. But will i be in a year or more like 3 months, or is it really just a mystery?:P

  • @willem1777 a lot of new kit that was shown at NAMM is due out May/June time, so it could possibly be then. The mk1 version was late, so who knows....

  • @groovindj Why doesnt the crossfader move on virtual dj when i move it on the VMS4???

  • @HuntedHouseMusic the VMS4 has a real mixer. You don't need the 'pretend' mixer on screen when you have a real one. Set VDJ to 'external mixer'....

  • Why did you buy this controller then critisize it when you can't even play

  • @ReubyDeubs why did you post a comment when you can't even spell?

  • @ReubyDeubs I was just gonna say this! Seriously this guy sucks and has no idea what he's doing.

  • @doomtomb3 and how long have you been DJing, Mr Expert?

I started before you were born....

  • good presentation... *thumbs up*

so do you like it or not

  • have u tried using the vms4 with traktor? if you have, did u run in to any problems like u did when running it with VDJ?

  • @SmokeyLightSouldiers I don't use Traktor.

  • I read a review that stated,

"The jog wheels don’t support scratching and pitch bending at the same time unless you use a protective rubber ring around the wheels, which detracts a lot from its curb appeal".

Do you have any problems with scratching and pitch bending together?

  • @BrocRock - the VMS4 has standard pitch sliders, so you could change the pitch with those whilst scratching on the jog wheels - if you really wanted to.

It also has pitch bend (nudge) buttons - ditto.

  • @groovindj cheers mate. I am about to purchase a new controller. The runners are VMS4, Traktor S4 and Denon MC6000. Waiting for MC to appear and to see what faults if any come out of the box. Do you have RPM software too?? Sure there is groovindj over at Gizmolabs.

  • @MagneticIncomes yes I have RPM but right now RPM cannot use MIDI controllers except the ones it directly supports (v1.1)

v1.2 is apparently on the way, so maybe they'll add MIDI learn.

  • Comment removed

  • @groovindj Yes mate Im over at RPM also. Great software. Bit limeted in terms of effects. But a sooooooooooo reliable work station. Fun to mix with loops and stuff. My name over there is Dyfunk DJ. I sold my denon 5500 in Sept so am on look out for a new purchase. Does the VMS4 only now come with VDJ? Decks on the internet are selling it with a free copy of Traktor. I heard that Traktor pulled out the deal as they a have there own controller.

  • @MagneticIncomes RPM is not limited with FX, as (just like VDJ) it can use VST plugins - and there are thousands of them.

Yes the VMS4 (when it was called Velocity) was going to ship with Traktor but now ships with VDJ. The Decks listing is either very out of date or their own deal.

  • Whats your thoughts on this unit now Groovindj? have your tried it with VDJ 7?

  • @MagneticIncomes my thoughts are that it's an OK controller. It has flaws but no product is ever perfect. You have to be careful not to overload the mixer as there isn't much headroom (due to it running on 5v) but if you're careful it's fine.

  • @groovindj

are you saying that this unit can be unstable? shut down ect during a gig? wat do you mean be overload?

  • @DiscotopiaUk there are stories of the unit resetting, yes (on the ADJ forum).

What I mean by overload is that it's very easy to make the output distorted. You need to run it below the usual 0dB level.

  • Dude what type of music do you stick to minimal, trance, techno, house?? or are you whatever

  • @MrJnog I don't "stick to" anything. I have a very wide taste and appreciate singers and musicans whatever they play.

  • Great review, I've been looking to buying this controller and this has certainly been great help. Do you have any issues with audio latency?

  • @BrocRock the latency is fine, as the VMS4 uses an ASIO sound card. There's also a 'turbo' mode that can be enabled.

  • hey @groovindj

you know how you couldn't figure out how to scan through songs?

i'm pretty sure that's what the mouse pad is for..

i just ordered my vms4, so i guess i'll find out soon

  • @CutPasteDJ the mouse pad on the VMS4 is rubbish! They really shouldn't have bothered putting one on the thing.

  • @groovindj

really? aw man. i get my vms4 on wed. i guess we'll see

  • @CutPasteDJ The mouse pad on mine works fine! Also to use the touch strips u have to hold shift first and u can use the strip search to search thru the songs similar to the NS7. Trust me u won't be disappointed with the VMS4! I just sold mine though for $500aud and upgrading to the NS7FX. But let me know how u go with urs

  • @CutPasteDJ to scan thru the songs hold shift first and use the touch strip on the sides

  • @CutPasteDJ To scroll thru the songs without using ur mouse hold shift and use the fx select and control knobs to scroll thru the songs and crates. if u have any problems with the VMS4 let me know i might be able to help ya!

  • DUDE YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO USE THIS OBVIOUSLY I HAVE THE VMS4 YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE UR VDJ MAN EVERYTHING WILL WORK FINE AFTER THAT

  • @jp36989 first, don't shout.

Second, this video was made before the release of VDJ 7.

  • @groovindj Yeah Man Your Right I Didnt Look At The Date Man lol

  • Just a quick word of advice. If the resolution on vdj is awful, download the Omega graphics card drivers. :)

  • Would you recomend this product for a beginner DJ?

I bought the little hercules mp3 e2 and it broke straight away, I've decided to go all out and get a decent bit of kit instead, would this be it?

  • @reubenw59 also I will be moving back home to NZ and would want to ship it over, it costs alot to send heavy stuff to the other side of earth haha, how heavy is this, I've heard its pushing 10kg

  • @reubenw59 in the shipping carton it's 8.8kg gross and 59.1 x 43.6 x 20.5cm

  • @reubenw59 it's less of a toy than the e2 and the casing is certainly solid, but the controls are still fairly flimsy. Bear in mind that similar units from 'higher up' brands cost around £700 - and they are better built.

  • @groovindj Well thanks for the info mate, think I might save up a bit more and think about getting the traktor kontrol S4. Overall better build, full software, lighter and cheaper to ship. thanks buddy

  • @reubenw59 i just got the VMS4 and i'm a beginner also and i absolutely love it! Had problems hooking it up but once i finally got it running it's SICK!!! U must get it man u won't regret it. I bought the DJ Tech Imix Reload and returned that piece of crap for the VMS4:) Well worth the money! U can pick one up for $420 brand new from an authorized dealer. Free shipping if ur in the states and $80 to Australia where i live which is really cheap for a 20 pound package!

  • @tranjohn i actually just got the numark mixtrack PRO quickly as i need to transport it whe i back to NZ in 2/3 days, so i got because its a good starter, light and easy to carry around, once im set in NZ i will get this or if i have a bigger budget get the traktor kontrol S4, thats a pretty sweet deal though not gonna lie lol

  • i need your help again.

i was dj'ing this party yesterday and my VMS4 keep on resetting on me. it would be good and then i would turn the platter and it wouldnt move on the screen. and then when i would hit a button it would shut off really quick and go back on and the music would stop going thru my speakers and play from my computer.

do u think its a defect?

i was dj'ing out side yesterday and it was cold but i dont think it was below 60 degrees

    please help me out

  • @chuenty818, I am not American Audio support. You need to post on their forum, or email US support.

  • did the install of the LE version fix that pause button problem? Or is it a real hardware issue?

  • @tommyboombotz, the pause button problem was the actual physical button itself.

People have reported similar things with other buttons (and knobs) on the unit.

To be fair, AA did come to my house and offer me a swap, but I kept my original. The pause button is not something that'll get used much, so I'll live with it.

  • do you know how to fix the headphones?

because on my vms4 i can only hear the music thats live. i tried changing the cue controls and i really dont know what to do. i think it has something to do with me being on a headphone adapter?

please tell me whats wrong as soon as possible

  • @chuenty818, you need to make sure the 'cue mix' control is turned to 'cue' and not 'master'.

  • @chuenty818 i figured it out man. i forgot to push the little cue buttons. and yeah i only hear both sides when im between cue and cue mix but not on master thanks though man

  • Hey GroovinDj, Need your help... i just got my vms4 installed it, downloaded the latest driver from the website. the pice works fine on the vdj le. but my problem is its not functioning with my virtual dj pro which i already have, and i have no idea how to get it working. please tell me what you did to get your working. i dont knw if its the mapping as i dnt see vms4 as a external device.

  • @zanecasbz, if you're running the latest version of VDJ then it should work fine.

  • Hey Groovindj. Can you try something for me? I messed around and mixed a bit on a VMS4 at a Mobile Beat Tour stop, but all they had was a unit running on VDJ LE, and there seemed to be no way to enable Key Lock. One good test for the audio sound card, is to enable key lock, so you can adjust the tempo without adjusting the pitch. On a weak card, the sound will garble a lot while adjusting tempo with key lock engaged. On a good quality audio interface, the audio will only strobe at extremes

  • (cont) Since you have VDJ Pro installed, can you try it out with Key Lock engaged, and changing tempo of the track, and see if the audio garbles badly, or just a bit of the usual time stretch distortion at extremes that is normal?

  • ok thanks for your help, i will make sure i check it out properly. i did see one at a weekend event at my local dj superstore last weekend, bt it wasnt setup so couldnt really have a play with. but thank u for your help anyway i will deffinately take it in 2 consideration. are there any other midi units priced arround the £400 mark that u have tested?

  • ok thanks for your help. would you recomend a vms4 and other than the obvious flaws that u metioned are there any major problems? thanx once again

  • @djhydro88, the audio problems that have cropped up so far can be worked around, with a bit of care.

However, there do seem to be some issues with quality control. I had American Audio visit me yesterday with a brand new VMS4, and the mic inputs were swapped!

At this stage I would say that if you do get one, check it over carefully.

  • hi i wonder if u can help me. your videos on the vms4 have been extremley helpful and i think u have done a great job. i have wanted one of these for quite some time now bt have read a few reviews with some issues. jog wheels, outputs, sound quality etc. i am going to be buying a controller this week and 4 channels arent as important 2 me as quality of sound so am considering an M-Audio Xponent. have u reviewed an xponent in the same way or have u used one and could u please advise me. thanks

  • @djhydro88, sorry I know nothing about the Xponent.

Unlike some guys on YouTube, the equipment in my videos is purchased by me - not sent for review free of charge, so I don't have access to loads of different kit.

  • Traktor's forthcoming S4 completely pisses on the VMS4, Although it's £250 more expensive...

  • @acwh79, only one mic input, on a jack - not XLR, without any EQ at all.

Only two analogue inputs, that can't be used for/with timecode.

If you want to pay more for less, go ahead!

  • @groovindj No-one needs 2 mics. If you're in a club then there will be a professional mixer there anyway that will house the extra mic channel if you require it.

There is a 3 band EQ (High, Mid, Low) and NI have said that there will be an update that will allow timecode vinyls although I don't see the point as vinyl is dead.

Lastly the VMS4 by your own admission in your review has bugs. Stupid bugs to be honest with you because those flaws you pointed out should have been caught by in testing

  • @acwh79 well clearly lots of people do need two mics, because many DJ mixers have two mic inputs.

There is three band EQ on the S4 but not on the mic channel.

Who said anything about clubs? The VMS4 is designed for mobile DJs. American Audio aim their gear primarily at mobile DJs. And the whole idea of the VMS4 is that it's an all-in-one unit, so shouldn't require plugging in to another mixer.

As for bugs, even Pioneer release "industry standard" high end kit with bugs.

  • @groovindj Nothing in the press release for this product mentions 'mobile DJs'. I would assume the product is aimed as an alternative to vinyl or cd mixing...

Fair comment on the mic issue. I still don't see a massive need for 2 mic sockets though.

The bugs you revealled are a deal breaker though. I was going to buy the VMS4 until I watched your review. The simple fact that the right deck can't stop a tune reliably is an example that it's too risky to be used when playing out.

  • @acwh79, if you ask American Audio they will tell you that their products are aimed primarily at mobile DJs. You can also tell simply by the type (and price) of products they release.

The issue with the right pause button is specific to my unit. I tried a replacement VMS4 and the pause worked fine.

  • @groovindj Based on your replacement, would you say the product is now a stable solution?

  • @acwh79, I would say that AA are aware of the problems people are having, and they're actively working on them. None of the issues are insurmountable.

  • Hey Groovindj thanks for a thorough review... good job. Not feeling the love for the VMS4 so may leave ADJ alone with this to work out the kinks and revisit it in a few months. Good luck with yours.

  • Hi GroovinDJ,

I too couldn't wait for my VMS2 to arrive. After 1 day I took it back to the dealer :-( The main reason was because the Mic inputs become distorted if you do more than whisper into the mic. The reason for the distortion is because the input level is set too high. You can adjust the output level but even with the levels all 'in the green' the distortion is present. We tried two others in the shop and they were all the same.

    What is yours like?

  • @MCRickyP, my mic input sounds OK - at least the one I tried does.

Going by what I've read from others, I need to test all the analogue inputs.

  • I think based on this review I will stick to my Numark Total Control until something miles better comes along...

  • I have read up on most of the issues with VMS4 on the website forum. With time all/most of them should be fixed. The one thing I am concerned about is the sound quality. Someone on the forum mentioned its no good. Can you confirm, shed some light on that GROOVINDJ....!?

    Hows the sound....?!

  • @plugggd, I've had a listen through my small RCF speakers and it sounds OK.

Not noticed any distortion in the actual files playing, although there are some odd background noises.

    Not tried analogue yet.

  • I followed all the vms 4 coverage since namm and thought it was to have traktor version with it but if yove got a vms 4 and you want the asio driver most seperate from the VDJ i would recommend exploring the CD that comes with it throug my pc experience it is more that likly that there is more that 1 .exe file 1 of the is likely to be the VDj the other drivers may be it is rare just to have 1 .exe that dose it all when installing a program and drivers...

  • @ThePioPro, the Traktor thing was changed a long time ago. Turns out that Traktor have their own very similar controller on the way.

The ASIO exe file on the CD does not fully install the drivers. You have to install LE to get the ASIO stuff working.

However, ADJ have now uploaded ASIO drivers to the VMS4 website.....

  • The Reason why there is no configuration options in Virtual DJ LE is becuase everything is pre-configured in the software for the vms4. make sure your VMS4 is set to 4 out mode, set your X fader assinment to 2 and 3. your VDJ decks will come thu channels 2 and 3.

  • @ADJLeo, as I said earlier, when you click a button marked 'config' you expect to get config options! If there's no config, why have a config button?

I know that's down to VDJ not ADJ but even so.......

  • @groovindj Because the skin can be used in the pro version and this will bring up the 20-Trial version or the upgrade option. The 20 trial is not available to user who have virtual DJ already or have ran a 20 trial already.

  • Hi GroovinDJ and well done on being the first UK DJ to Video the VMS4 in Action,

I get mine tomarrow all going well ..Couple of Questions for ya first did installing the LE drivers sort out the righthand deck Pause problem you had and also I have the full version of VDJ ,I guess that I have to install the LE version over the Version I have and then reinstall the full lastest VDJ for the VDJ site BIG QUESTION Do you Know will I lose all my VDJ settings like my History and cue points ?

  • shift+sample/select to scroll thru your music

  • @Leventevagyok

Did you had a bad experience?

It is the low-price that make us buy american audio instead of the expensive things of pioneer. If you start deejaying american audio is a good choice i think.

    Just my opinion...

  • Cheers for uploading Paul

Look forward to seeing you you get on with this on the road...Keep us posted

  • Hey Groovin', fair play to you for sticking with it - looks like you're getting there. I have to admit I would have got very stressed and probably curled up in the corner sobbing. Keep them coming. Cheers, Paul ;o)

  • MY Mapping the gave standard, doesn't work at all, i cant use it as a standard mixer yet , what are your settings across the bottom at the front of the controller ?

  • Can you check what version of VMS4 hardware you have. It should be 3.8. The way to check it turn the power off, Then power it up and count the LED's on the meter. There should be 3 lit up on the left and 8 on the right. If it is not, let me know, we can update it over the web.

  • @Tfreret1, yes it's 3.8 and there is also a 3.8 bin file on my hard drive - but there's no info on firmware or any download links on any of the ADJ sites.

How is anyone supposed to know what the latest FW is if it's not on the sites?

  • Shift+Effect Select knob = Folder tree browsing

Shift+Sample Select knob = Track browsing

Also have been told that the mapping changed between 6.1 and 6.1.1 so make sure you have the latest one installed.

    Roy

  • 1) maybe does the "from the box" virtual DJ LE support the scrollings buttons? Try to export the configs and import it to your full version. Maybe that works.

    2) the lag is maybe caused by the latency of your soundcard

    VC

  • @DJVC1993, apparently the effect and sample select buttons have been assigned by VDJ to move around the record case, by holding shift and turning them.

I think I may reassign them to something else.

There should be no lag, as the sound is fed through the VMS4 card, which is low latency ASIO. It could be that the response of VDJ is slow for the scratch function. Scrubbing for cue points seems OK, so it should be fine.

  • @groovindj: I think when you assigned the sound card with the driver with the picture of the VMS4 on it, that was the Non-ASIO driver. If you are using the ASIO driver, you should see that "Ultra Low Latency" option box, and you should be able to adjust the latency. If you haven't tried the driver that just says "ADJ ASIO, give that one a try with scratching, see if it's any different? I'd like to hear the results :)

  • @sleeperawaken36: Generally sound drivers for devices like this will give you a non-ASIO option as well as an ASIO option, because slower computers don't handle ASIO so well. Hence, I think the sound card option with the picture of the VMS4 is the non-ASIO option. I could be wrong, but it's worth a try? :)

  • @sleeperawaken36, no difference - I just tried all the options, including Ultra, and the jog wheel scratch lag is the same in all. I reckon it's just the way VDJ sends the scratch MIDI info.

  • @groovindj: I currently use a pair of Stanton scs.3d controllers, with a Stanton Final Scratch Amp (2) firewire soundcard, and scratch response seems pretty tight on those, as well as via time code CD. However, the VMS4 is suppose to use a much finer resolution on the wheels, so maybe it has something to do with that, maybe it's bogging it down a bit. Ugh, I really hope it's not just the way it's going to be, have been looking forward to this controller, and a big part because of the platters

  • (cont) I should clarify that I am using the Stanton scs.3d with Virtual DJ as well.

  • @sleeperawaken36, I guess it could be related to the values that VDJ have used on the jogs vs the Stanton.

  • @groovindj : I hope they can get it sorted. Higher res values don't help if it lags., but it would be nice to have the higher res values, so it sounds closer to time code, without the time code.

  • @sleeperawaken36, I've got another issue now!

Just tried to run the VDJ LE version again and it's telling me my 20 day trial is up - after a matter of hours...

  • @groovindj : Well, that's rather frustrating. Atleast you've got the pro version too. Time to transfer what you need from the LE to the Pro folder. Still.... should give you the 20 days, not 2 hours.

  • @sleeperawaken36

The supplied version of VDJ 6 LE does not have any time limitation.

The 20 day trial mentioned under config is for the PRO VERSION of VDJ 6.

If you encounter problems in activating your LE Version please double check the entered serial. Leave out " - " but include " / "

  • @adjeu, the thing is, when people click on 'config' they expect to get config options.

The only choices presented to them are 'try the Pro trial' or 'buy Pro', so they click Trial. There is no 'use LE version' button.

  • @groovindj : This is more of a Virtual DJ issue on how they've designed their LE products. LE is always a hardware dependent application, it was the same with the Numark Total Control when I got it with an LE version, but the config button should be replaced on the LE version with an "upgrade" button in the same place to make it simple, and make more sense. This is something the guys at VDJ are responsible for though, not ADJ.

  • (cont) On the flip side, ADJ should have the firmware updater and ASIO drivers separate from the VDJ LE version install, as well as an installer or atleast folder for any needed config files and skins.

  • @groovindj : Wait.... The LE version is trial only software? I thought that was a fully useable/not trialware LE version. The software that ships with it is 20 day trialware?

  • @groovindj Exactly Same Issue, so cant ammend setting

  • @akashr, there are NO settings for the LE version.

Even though it has a config button, there is no config!

Also I discovered that it will not run unless the VMS4 is connected, so you can't even manage your library without getting your VMS4 out.
