  • this is the first album i ever owned! must have worn out 2or 3 copies! it was said that Mark used to take off his shirt for photo shoots, because when he was claen shaven, everyone thought he was a chick

  • I use to play the "red" album at full volume just to piss off the neighbors.

  • If you're just getting into Grand Funk, the "red" album is the one to get.

The rawness has never been duplicated!

  • This rocks....but you've GOT to experience it on the "GRAND FUNK LIVE" album; Mark goes ballistic on the guitar solo at the end and the audience response makes it - my favorite live performance

  • I cud see Otto cruzin 2 this in his yellow school bus

  • HOLY FUCK !!!!!

  • Great song..Its been a long time

  • My god these guys are the amazing... Im 43 and thought I knew something about music. Zeppelin sabbath all those guys cant stand up to the body of work these guys created... fucking talented! Never a mistake flawless goddamn victory

  • '...ain't nobody gonna know 'bout my bread."

"All they after is your money."

true friendship....lose the $ and see who is still around.

  • Cool!

  • Coolest album EVER !

  • Slappin the bass

  • de domie

  • This is the 2nd album I ever bought. I was 9 years old when I got it in 1970. I still have it, pops, skips and all.

  • got so fucking high on this fucking cool tune! smoke dope to this!!!!!

  • just the damn best.

  • why arnt they in the Rock and roll hall of fame in fact why haven't they been in for like 20 years

  • @ribinfo because the HOF isn't good enough for GFR.

  • マーク大好き!!

  • AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome music I still have the red album,Omg If i could go back, cruising all night with sunglasses on!

  • Fucking Railroad man

  • That lead guitar intro has been one of my favorite riffs since '70. Me & my buddies wore out 2 0r 3 of those red albums back then. Epically good stuff....

  • gotta turn it up!!!!!!!!!!

  • They should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame

  • Google grand funk bridge, I was there last year and got my photo under it, Very cool, use to be grand trunk railroad and in the 70s someone painted Grand Funk and it's still there, Flint Mi.

  • Comment removed

  • How can I not blast this? My parents complained" turn that down" now my wife and kids say "turn that down"??? I don't understand thier logic. Gotta feel it!

  • Schacher was and is an incredible rock bassist. He held it all together. What a sound they created. E Pluribus Funk likely features his gruffest sound.....but no matter the GFR album, Mel is right on his game. Even on the tamer Phoenix....he lays down some great lines.

  • Mark's voice still sounds great, alot of other big acts can't hit these notes.

  • forget the white album. discard your black album. the red album is iconic above the rest

  • grand funk is awesome

  • After hearing this track I think I will put on the LP. So good. Have'nt heard it for a few years.

  • Siiii !!!! los tonos de surquillo con sangre verde !!!! jajajajaj Yeahhhh !!!!!

  • forkin aye ........ Mark is a rare gem

  • This is how I learned to play guitar.

Put the needle back, back, back...

  • My eyes get bloodshot just HEARINGthis song ..man does it bring back some memories !

  • mark farner, in my humble opinion is the best front man ever

  • Let's face it ! Everything about Grand Funk was totally new at the time. Mark Farner's guitar had a raw violin sound quality to it, Mel's bass sounded like no other bass on the planet, Don's drumming was incredible (what a foot !!!) Both of them could sing great and they had COOL songs...They don't need to be in the Rock & Roll hall of Fame because they can stand on their own... and their still going !!!

  • K' A Jackson!

  • What a phenomenal groove....

    GFR for ever...

    R G France

  • Nop. Definitely I rather live version.

  • Best live band ever.

  • Arguably Mel Schacher's best bass line. So commanding. I love jammin this stuff.

  • yeah, i agree, the song is better live with more human energy output, but any feedback is contained better here in the studio

  • amen brother!!!!

  • The 'Red Album' was my first Grand Funk LP which I got shortly after it came out when I was 14 years old. I saw them later that year at Boston Garden. It is still my favorite GFR release.

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • God bless you Mark , Don & Mel... I pray for your prosperity , happiness & good health

  • the live version electrifies me

  • @schwinkleknobs me too! I used to jam hard to this tune on there live 1970 LP

  • this when mark farner was at his best

  • The most underated band in the world they did it all but have nothing to show for it but you sure got a real good friend!

  • If anyone knows how Mel got that sound PLEASE tell me. I ve been trying to get it for almost 40 yrs. ha It makes your wallpaper curl up. ha I can t tell if it s just overdrive, or the cones on his speakers are ready to blow. ha

  • My guess is this is an over driven amp that's been mic'd. He also plays hard with a pick. Always loved the bass on this song. Talk about a groove!

  • Mel used a gibson EB 2 ( i think) humbucker bass pickup in a Fender jazz bass!

  • Great Band. Love that bass! Go Mel! Mark Don & Mel. This red album was my first album that I bought with my own cash, lol! You sure got a real good friend!

    5 stars 

  • middle break = GROOVE

  • Their sound on this song reminds me of Bad Company.

  • you have it backwards - Bad Company sounds like Grand Funk - G.F.R. was way before Bad Company...

  • True enough, G.F.R's the Daddy!

  • Right-on.

  • @31formula DOUBLE BILL Tonight on our stage! Free and Grand Funk Railroad BATTLE OF THE BANDS

  • First GFR album I've heard but the first song for me was "Winter and My Soul" because I had this odd habit as a young kid (7 or 8 years old to be exact) of playing side 2 first. So as a result, this was the closing track of the album.

That's right, I was a serious and fussy rock and roll listener way back then. The more kick-ass or psychedelic the better.

  • que bajo no ocomo laven y el requinto y la bateria los mejores que he oido.

  • forget the hall of fame cause poliitcs are politics...and your vote dont count...

  • Yep, This has always been one of my favorites. Listening to the bass line after reading the comments reminds me of how much Mel's bass defined the sound!! The guitar here sounds wonderful, with very nice low tones.

    Perfect Rock and Roll!!

I'll be on the lookout to see both versions of the band... though of course would love to see them together.

    Thanks for the post.

  • This song is KILLER what a introduce riff!!!! This is true ROCK´N ROLL!!!

    Long live GFR!!!!

  • bluesy intro...nobody was doing this then. well, maybe billy gibbons was, live

  • true that he played on Q Mark, but I'm not sure if he played on 96 tears...I would like to see the proof...i read he joined Q Mark after that monster hit....

  • and alot of people don't know that mel had his first hit with another band does anyone remember 96 tears .............you're gonna cry 96 tears .............wah wah wah

  • Mel Schaucher is IT!!!! He influenced me at a very young age to dump guitar and devote my life to the bass. That was over 30 years ago and Im still at it lol!!

That bass line at 3:26 rox hardcore. Love these guys!!!

  • Kickass band!

  • At 3:50 Now That's what I'm talking about ...BASS!

  • uh...uh...there aint no they sound like

    crap...grand funk is them period...

haters, cheaters, even the fools who are in the hall of fame committee or whatever...cant stop the real FUNK,...cause you sure got a real good friend..

  • Wow, listen to that bass guitar!

  • the best song of "grand funk" album

  • This song is great, the whole album is great. Ive seen them in concert 2 times in the last year. Even though mark was not there, they are still great. A great time in my life and there music never, never gets old. GFR will live forever

  • One of Grand Funk's best right here. Love the breakdown at 1:55. Saw them this year at the California Mid-State Fair for free! (minus Farner of course)They have Max Carl from .38 Special singing now and ex-Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick. Mel and Don still play like it isn't a day past 1972!

  • exellent!

  • Very few recordings have punchy and clear bass notes you can pick out. I have no idea why but Grand Funk knew how to lay it down. In Need = one of my favorites.

  • Yeah, during production, it's like they pushed it up front to be almost like a rhythm guitar. Mel was a very seasoned bass player at the age of eighteen and Don was influential to many famous drummers that followed. And what more can you say about Mark's voice. They had the whole package.

  • alot of people refer to mel's style as "lead bass" which is just flat out badass.

  • forget the hall of fame...this is the real

deal...GRAND FUNK... ...kinda like LARRY BIRD

    one of a kind...

  • WOW...Talk about a fantastic comment.... Two of the very greatest at what they do: Larry and GFR! Preach on.

  • the bass on this song is so warm and powerful, listening to it at full volume is like getting a body massage. I watched a friend build a massive 8 woofer speaker cabinet just to feel the bass vibrate through his body. This song is more that just great rock music.

  • My dad has a friend that absoutely loves this band so much and is a drummer and likes Don Brewer also, and he always thought he was Mark because he wore mocacines to school I heard and acted like Mark Farner. hahaha.

  • Bass got balls thnx to Dave West who invented WEST amps.

  • good pot smoking album indeed!~

  • Bitchin'.

  • The red Album!!! In Need, another great song! What a bout Winter and my soul? I love the bass rhytim!! Al three are great musicians.

  • @Christperkash - Winter and my soul was a great song to. I think they were snowed in somewhere up north, maybe Michigan, when they wrote this song

  • best pot smoking album ever,,in need with paranoid and inside looking out,,great tunes.

  • If Mark Farner is not in the R&R hall of fame then there is no R&R hall of fame PERIOD!

  • amen brother!!!!!

  • absolutely....

  • Thanks for posting this song. Please do all of them, especially Paranoid off this album.

  • absolutly

  • In my opinion...this song above many is what GRAND FUNK was all about..and truly deserving of being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

They are smoking...you need to close your eyes and feel what they felt...magic...

  • Grand Funk Railroad.... so fuckin good

  • Everything Grand Funk rocks...love it.

  • The live version on "Live Album" is just friggin' incedible! You all know the certain "part" I'm talking about!

  • You know how great "jam bands" always have songs that evolved from previous songs. I always thought "Footstompin' Music" evolved out of the "live" version of this song--especially the bass riff at the 3:20 mark just after the harmonica and guitar "rave-up".

  • the live album version is great, they dont make music like that anymore

  • looove the song man

  • oh por la puta este tema es xuxetumadre

  • Another GREAT GFRxR song! Thanks for posting!

  • I read where Eddie Van Halen's ERUPTION was his homage to IN NEED played by Mark Farner.

  • Yes, and also Eddie said Mark Farner was a huge influence on him.

  • I used to rock out hard on there Live LP from 1970, especially this song and Into the Sun!!!

  • Yess Ah..we have an Amen..now all together Brothers and Sisters.Amen the Funk Brothers into the HOF.

  • Yes ah brothers and sisters, you are all In need of being FunkASized. Can I get an Amen?? Let me hear that Amen Brothers and Sisters.I still play this album on my vintage record player, sounds tons better than Cds.Funk to the HOF Now.

  • Amen.

  • Garage band my patuti! Mark matches the masters with those unheard of dynamic in your face chords streaming through your brain, or what's left of it...lol.

"If you got somebody, you can trust to the very end..I said, if ya do, I wanna be like you, cause you sure gotta a real good friend..friend...friend...woooooo!!!!

Riding the master chords, jettising into space, low on oxygen..I'm Grandfunkengrooven!!

    :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

  • I thought I was a stoner.

  • @TheCenter54 lol

  • 5 stars great! Thanks for posting!

  • This is a great tune on recordings and especially played LIVE!

Mark's voice is even better now! Get to a show this Summer!

  • great under-rated tune from the best live band ever,GRAND FUNK!
