Nice way to buy a player, but the league sucks Ranger cock, especially when you have Colin Campbell on your bench.
Don't worry, Colorado and Detroit are pretty much done with their over the hill stars, maybe you can sign them and make another run at the cup......Ranger style.
@mrceebees14 WAH WAH WAH quit crying u little pussy... richter, leetch, kovalev, and zubov ALL DRAFTED RANGERS.... Aside from Russ Hodges yelling " the Giants win the pennant, Giants win the pennant, Giants win the pennant" has there ever been a better call than " MATTEAU, MATTEAU, MATTEAU" ? Maybe "gets by Buckner"...the trinity of NYC sports calls....
The legndary call that makes asshole Devils fans weep till this day, although I think Graves wraparound on Broduer in 97 was just as dramatic becuase that was a huge upset. Rangers simply whore the Devils in the playoffs !! 92, 94, 97, 08. FUCK the Devils and their FAG fans !!
brian leetch had a gay affair with darren turcotte back in 1990. ranger fans loved turcotte but the n.y. rangers had to seperate them for the teams sake.
MATTEAU! MATTEAU!! MATTEAU!!! Classic call, good game, great finish! Although, I think that the announcer, Howie Rose, sounded like he hurt himself when he made the call! MY TOE! MY TOE!! MY TOE!!! GET IT? Other than that, it will go down in history as one of the greatest play-by-play calls of all time!
still brings tears to my eyes. double over time in game 7, i was ready to have a heart attack. I couldnt have taken much more. thank god they won. i never would have gotten over losing that one. good thing for the devils and their fans that they went on a fucking tear after that.
This was probably the most important goal in the history of both these franchises. The Devils have since been contenders every single season (sans 1996) and the Rangers won the Stanley Cup after 54 years (granted I agree with they should not have traded away certain key players)
Even looking back now, the rangers are off to a great start and the Devils, despite injuries to Brodeur, Rolston, Holik, Langenbrunner playing hurt, and Martin, are still hot. Its '94 all over again, and I can't wait =)
Romeo, you are very well versed in your hockey. I am a Rangers fan, and I also agree that they would have won had they not traded Gartner (that broke my heart, but what are you gonna do). The prolonged playoff drought was brought on by trading Weight, Amonte and Marchant. They were good until '97, then nothing. Trading Zubov for Robataille was a waste, too. I think Ulffie was in that trade as well. Neil Smith mortgaged the future for a Cup they would have won anyway.
I think that trade was Zubov and Nedved for Robitaille and Ulf Samuelsson. The Pens then sent Zubov to Dallas the following year for Kevin Hatcher.
Yeah, I'm positive the Rangers would have won at least one more Cup had they not made those mostly unnecessary trades. I wonder if Neil Smith's overanxious dealing got him fired from the Island--perhaps Charles Wang researched his history more thoroughly after hiring him? Who knows?
Matteau was one of 7 HAWK players along with 7 OILERS that won the cup in N.Y. Even the Rangers GM Neil Smith said he'd kiss Glenn Sathers ass in Macys window if N.Y. won the cup in 94. It's all caught on tape!
That criticism really doesn't hold water, though. So Neil Smith went out and acquired several players from other teams to help his own team win the Cup. Isn't that what he was supposed to do, as the teams GM?
Further, it's not as if those former Hawks had come from a dynasty; and, the Oilers Smith obtained, for the most part, were a couple years or so removed from their last cup in Edmonton. Also, the Rangers still had quite a few homegrown players (e.g. Leetch, Richter).
Correction to my last response. That second sentence should have read, "That doesn't mean I couldn't name more."
As for the others, the '94 Rangers featured Sergei Zubov, Alexei Kovalev, and Alexander Karpovstev (drafted by Quebec, if I'm not mistaken, but came up with the Rangers). That makes a total of four or five, depending on your precise definition of "homegrown." That may not sound like a lot, but it's more or less average for a Cup team in the free agency era.
I take part of that back. After researching it a bit, I found the Rangers and the 2007 Ducks had the least "homegrown" players on their rosters (both had five). (For the Rangers, I missed Nemchinov). Still, that doesn't negate the fact that the former Blackhawks Neil Smith acquired didn't win a Cup with Chicago, and one of the former Oilers (Graves) only won one in Edmonton. Thus, it's not as if Smith simply picked from a former Champion. He assembled the right parts, and it showed.
Dude, I know you're just busting balls--as I do quite frequently--but I have to ask this: Do you know how to read? I named FIVE (or SIX, again depending on how precisely you define the term "homegrown player"): Leetch, Richter, Zubov, Kovalev, Nemchinov, and Karpovtsev, who was drafted by Quebec in 1990 but cracked the NHL with the Rangers in 1993. Hence, 5 or 6.
It's still a questionable criticism. One, they didn't acquire Anderson from Edmonton; they got him at the deadline that year for Gartner, who was not far past his prime. Two, Graves was just a kid with the Oilers in '90 and didn't come into his own until he was with the Rangers. Three, you can arguably make the same case for Beukeboom, even if he did win three Cups in Edmonton (he didn't enter his prime as a player, in my opinion, until he joined the Rangers).
I love listening to LOSER fans pathetic excuses for needing the OILERS and HAWKS to win the cup for them! it never gets old! Beukaboom only won 3 cups but was just a kid! baaa haaa haaaaa haaa! 1994 LETS GO OILERS!
c) The Rangers GAVE UP GOOD PLAYERS (e.g. Gartner, Amonte) to obtain the former Oilers and Hawks you keep alluding to. In fact, Gartner was better that year for the player the Rangers got for him--Anderson. Amonte was also better than Matteau and Noonan, whom Chicago gave up to obtain the former. You could argue that those trades really weren't necessary, and possibly cost the Rangers a dynasty.
Thanks, man. Yeah, that "ghytgb" doesn't seem to enjoy intelligent debate. And that whole "Oilers-Blackhawks" argument really isn't that valid. It's not as if they ripped the entire Edmonton Dynasty and brought in Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey, and Fuhr as well. And the Hawks? They made the Finals in '92--that's it. The only players the Rangers obtained from Chicago were role players save for Larmer. Big deal.
funny how the guys the rangers gave up couldn't win the cup for them! the excuses get more and more hilarious as it goes on. i love it! whoooooo yeah boy!
You know what I just realized? You don't know sh-t about hockey.
"The guys the Rangers gave up," aside from Gartner, Patrick, and Nicholls (in the Messier trade) were almost all youngsters who were just reaching their primes (Amonte, Turcotte) or hadn't yet (Weight, Marchant). Marchant only played a handful of games with the Rangers before being dealt. Amonte and Weight had only played two or three seasons--as YOUNGSTERS. So your argument falls flat again.
Beukeboom: 2 or 3 (I forget), but was never a major contributor (he only played a total of nine playoff games over three playoff years with the Oilers). So he doesn't count.
Graves: 1. As a kid. Did well, but was only an Oiler for what, two seasons?
Add to that the fact that aside from Messier and Graves, the other "Oilers" were just about washed up. So your argument fails.
it can't fail because those guys with all those cups and playoff experience won the Cup for N.Y. in 1994 and your own GM Neil Smith admitted it by saying "I'll kiss Glen Sathers ass in Macys window if we win the cup this year" There you are! 1994 LETS GO OILERS!
Your argument fails, because the available evidence shows that the Rangers probably would have won the Cup anyway had they not made those last few trades in '92-93 and '93-94. They traded away Mike Gartner, Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, James Patrick, and others who were, as a group, BETTER (as individuals and for the team, too) than the ex-Oilers obtained for them. (Obviously, I'm not including Messier here.)
And so what if Neil Smith said that. It doesn't make him right.
Matteau,Matteau,Matteau.Got to love Howie Rose.I saw him at a Met game.He does the Mets now.I will always think of him making this call though..What a great moment.
