wait. i just moved to maryland, so im a newbie. but exactly how do the transfers work? if i use a smartrip to get on a bus, within the next three hours, i probably get on 2 or 3 more buses. do i get charged individually per bus or does it automatically know i transfer? please help! im confused.
@steezyify you only pay the regular fee for the first bus you board and your card automatically knows when you use it within the next 3 hours, so it knows its a transfer and your card wont be charged :)
I just bought this card today loved using it. Not happy to pay 5 dollar fee just for the privilage of using the card. If the card is lost or stolen it is another 5 dollars what a money racket that is..
When you're at a farecard machine: To check the available balance on your SmarTrip card, push the CHECK VALUE button before you tap the card to the target. Your card balance will appear on the display screen.
If you have your smart card in a plastic case or if it is in your wallet, but still visible, is it possible to leave it in it's case and still use it? Does it need to be facing a specific direction (front or back?) thanks!
Instructions written by idiots and for idiots. The card sucks. What If I need to change the registration information? Why should I call somebody???!!!! What is the point of online registration without a possibility to login???!!!! What if I want to add value online? The only thing that is really well organized is taking your $5 for a new card :)
To get out ofvthe metro station, you simply touch your loaded smartcard to the logo to pay. What if a new user accidentally touches the logo twice, is the amount paid twice also? This is not clearly explained.
I have Transhare benefits.. they gave me like 10 metro rail farecards (worth $200).. Could I trade these in for a SmartTrip card? Because I need to ride the bus also.
Can you add balance on a paper pass onto your SmartTrip card, the same way you add on cash - touch the card, insert the paper pass and touch the card again?? Thnx.
Not sure what kind of paper pass you are referring to. If it is a MetroChek, then you can transfer any ammount from an unused card, otherwise you can transfer any balance less than $7.00. If you are refering to weekly rail or bus pass, no, those are not transferable.
I like the Metro but Smart Trip is a scam. If you're a tourist then it doesn't make sense to get it. Smart Trip is ideal for regular commuters. Next time I go to DC I'll avoid transfering from the train to the bus.
There are always going to be stupid people - as well as wiseguys who want to scam them.
Anyone who buys a card from someone like this (instead of through proper channels) is pretty naive and is just asking to get scammed! Even if a seller scans the card and shows that it currently has value, they (the registered user) will call WMATA and report the card as "lost." They get their money back, and the idiot who bought it has a very expensive (but worthless) card.
LB 456 - You can't blame Metro if stupid people fall for con artists tricks .
There are always going to be slime-balls around who want to scam people.
Unfortunately, the world is full of folks who don't exactly "fire on all their cerebral cylinders" so the scammers will have a limitless supply of easy victims.
I hate this thing.......good old paper tickets were handy!!! check hour u boarded with driver for transfer and you are all set. You don't need to teach people how to use their money. Now u need to teach how to use not-so-smart card to others. And most of these things betray you when u need them the most and don't have cash to refill. You can physically see the money in your wallet but u won't know the balance on this thing unless u find a vending machine which checks the balance
I agree -- you can't tell when your transfer time is used up, and if the bus is late you're stuck. Plus they break (I squatted with mine in my back pocket, from a stomach ache, and it cracked!), and it's $5.00 more to replace it! Still, they are fast if you're in a hurry. Expensive, though. I wish we still had a choice. But bus/train transfer discounts are more fair now.
Just remember! When {not if...} your "smart"card goes dead, don't bother to go to MetroCenter sales office to exchange it. You can not do that. Instead, just throw it away and buy a new one.
Those old paper farecards? Yes, you can still exchange those. But who'd want to do that?
but is metro going to add more blue ticket machines in metro stations. most only have one or two of these machines. if they expect more people to have smarttrip cards, they will need to add more blue machines. it already takes too long to wait in line for the few machines, and i'm sure the lines are only going to get longer.
Does anyone know any promotion codes for purchasing fare cards such as the Smartrip?

You can use it even if its in a wallet or plastic case. It can be tricky with the bus machines, but the Metrorail gates seem to be stronger.

Good Grief! If you don't like it, you don't have to use it. Some of you need to take the bus back to school.
