It's a conceit that runs throughout the movie. Basically, there is a main narrative that is periodically punctuated with these scenes of nuns in the Amazon. These scenes are more than just stylistic or even thematic digressions, they establish the diegetic parameters of the main plot line; i.e., miracles and/or god exists. It works brilliantly. There is a sort of tension to the major plot points in the main narrative that would not otherwise be there. That's just my take.

i like that most artfags talk about emporwerment and stuff when watching this stuff when really i think harmony korine finds this stuff funny. this scene made me laugh a lot.

I like how Harmony Korine combines a skydiving nun on a BMX bike with a super poignant post rock song. I love the whole absurd meets poignant aspect of it. I wish you could find that in more movies!
