I'd just like to say I'm a soldier who will gladly go to Afghanistan when I'm told to. I don't let that stop me from hating this amazing song (Or any other songs from the Vietnam era). So why can't everyone just put their opinions aside for once and love the music?
I am sick and tired of war, I am sick and tired of lies and excuses people use to start war. I am sick of the fact that our soldiers are being used by Big Oil Companies and dying in unnecessary wars. America's useless wars - Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. What a waste of our soldiers' lives. Great song by the great Jimmy Cliff.
How can one "enjoy" this song without thinking??? Just replace Vietnam with Iraq or Afghanistan. Nothing has changed about the misery of war or the sadness it leaves forever.
Of course, but people were getting into convoluted arguments about dead-end issues and failing to see the clear message delivered by the song, hence my comment.
@Littlewolf68 The Black Angels did exactly this. On their 2006 album, Passover, there is a track called Call to Arms, after that is a hidden track. Its on Youtube, just search Call to Arms Black Angels.
When I saw Jimmy Cliff at the Portland Zoo on his US/Canada tour he and his entire band literally replaced "VIETNAM" with "AFGANISTAN". I think you are correct in making this sort of connection if the artist who wrote the original song makes that connection as well.
It was a great show. I actually had never heard Jimmy Cliff until me and my friend watched "The Harder They Come" like a day before the show. He's amazing live for how old and thin he looks.
@DavisEvansHealy Um... Jimmy Cliff himself rewrote the song with lyrics about Afghanistan and has sung newer versions at his concert. It is not just a Vietnam protest song... its an anti-war song.
Its not about the wealth, im all for sharing, but that will not take care of the problem. Its about earth, her scarce resources and the insane reproduction ratio of the human race. Right now in western society "moralism" a human life is worth way more than the very planet that feeds us all. And most people are to dumb to either see or care about it

This is a Vietnam protest song, if you want to talk about Bin Laden, the ethics of war, the nwo or whatever then send eachother private messages.
Relax and enjoy the track instead, this is the language of pacifism.
