@winelegend Short and sweet: If a famous soprano sang "Nessun Dorma" wouldn't you be upset? ;D I'm a fan of Rolando but this is an aria meant for a castrated voice one that possesses a warm feminine quality which isn't found in a modern tenor - only mezzos can achieve a "closer" historical performance b/c as you know castration isn't appropriate in most cultures... There is plenty in the tenor repertoire for him to sing O.o
Not sure what the purists miss.... perhaps they should just turn it up LOUD. This is an amazing rendition. Powerful, full of energy and pure joy. it's rock n roll a la baroque. Magic.
This is THE most exciting video that I've seen on Utube. Rolando puts so much emotion into this piece that I am transported. This is brilliant. And who is the conductor? I want to be him!
Two fingers to historically-informed performance! This is, alas, the current state of the music industry. Pays no attention, whatsoever, to vocal treatises of the eighteenth century.
@Svatopluk So, you're saying that it's no good then? You know, this idea of "historically-informed" really reminds me of the "Original Instrument" crowd amongst us Guitarists. As Bream once observed, to obey THEIR edicts he'd have to either stop performing 2/3s of his repertoire, or take 10 instruments on stage with him! Just ENJOY so AWESOME singing, and feel the obvious JOY that Maestro Villazon does at the music!
@skingaz No, I wouldn't say it's no good at all – he is a fantastic singer. What I find frustrating is that the group is purportedly one that is devoted to historically-informed performance who is willing to forgo that way of thinking to bring in a 'star'. Thanks for sharing the Bream comments – he's right, in a way. Such an approach can really overcomplicate matters, however modern guitarists are still able to at least take some of the HP movement on board (David Russell springs to mind).
@Svatopluk Yes, but are there any "stars" of "Historically-informed" (really getting to HATE that phrase!) Performance? If not, then you have to "put up" with the true stars of Classical Music not quite being to your liking. As for the "HP movement" in Guitar, it has largely killed the instrument, where it has taken hold and push the guitar back a century at least. Oh, and good as Mr Russell is, I'd hardly call his performances on a very modern guitar (Byers or Danmann) especially HP.
Two finger's to historically-informed performance! This is, alas, the current state of the music industry. Pays no attention, whatsoever, to vocal treatises of the eighteenth century.

i think this is the first time iv'e heard Rolando singing naturally ... this is his really voice... he is not pushing here! .. i really like his voice very much in this aria ...
WOW! I have always dreamed about singing this aria, even though it is a mezzo soprano aria and now my idol Rolando Villazon have made my dream come true! I feel in heaven!
Um, I could have sworn that "Dopo Notte" was an aria for a coloratura mezzo and that it went down to a low A, but hey, do what you want, Rolando. To be honest, he's pretty good. I was looking through my school's library catalogue, saw this CD and thought "shit. show.", but it's decent. I'll give him that.
Sings from sound - wrong. As long as he is caught up with the sound of his voice and all the physicality that comes with and until he changes his perception about singing and what it is about he will never experience true vocal freedom. He sings against nature, which is the sole reason for the damage he has done and will do. Scrapheap in 5 years. And then they'll bring on the next eegit. We still must look to the past - the true lineage. The best exponent of Handel by far was John McCormack.
Deutsche Grammophon can't handle people's comments? Removing them? I admire Villazon, but we all seem to agree that this is simply not his repertory. Don't punish us for that.
I became a fan of him gradually I think that one lerns to love Villazon, not only for his voice but for his personality.
Aha. So I have to suppose you are a well-known professional musician? You have a trained voice or ear? You have studied ancient and baroque music? And, of course, you have heard me already, because you know so well about "my abilities"? Besides, "he" does not enjoy so much respect at the moment due what he does to his voice. If there is no critic, there is no progress. Its not a case of hate, here is someone ruining his voice. And people like you don´t realize it. THIS is sad.
This aria is not at all written for a tenor. It is one of Handel's most virtuose arias for castrato. (He wrote it for Il Carestini). See how he suffers!
Compare with Von Otter and you will hear what I mean!
Actually, although the aria was written for a tenor Handel himself approved it as an alternative aria for the tenor in 'Poro,' so he had no objection to a tenor singing this aria. And Villazon is superb.
Thank you for telling me this. I´m a tenor-baritone, working with this aria to achive a better technique. I´ve been thinking that maybe this role may fit for me, listening to the other arias, but I know that role was written for a castrato.
Now, when you are telling me about "Poro", maybe I put it in my concert-repertoire. Thank you
this is an usual, but silly, argument. I don't need to be a painter to give an opinion on Rembrandt, saying that he's a great artist and Paulus Potter is simply average, not to say mediocre.
This is the first Classical singer I've really been inspired by and paid any attention to. He sings with real expression. I know because I can feel it.
Maybe he's wanting to come out of some closet? :) It's an interesting experiment, which in my view shouldn't happen too often. And Villazon should stay away from baroque music alltogether. Please? Thanks.
This is my absolutely favorite video. It looks like a mad assembly but it is wonderful. This video captured a moment of creative forces at work. I was a bit disappointed that it was not included on DVD. The CD is a MASTERPIECE.
I agree with jbrown91287... Villazon has found a 'new' voice which fits him like a glove... Have you heard a tenor sing Handel with as much joy as he?
Finally the fresh wind in the performance of barocco music! Bach, Handel and other were first of all human beings and their works are not the toys for the "barock-specialists", in reality antimusicians, who are using them for "public masturbation" during the concerts. Only to convince themselves! Like this stupid conductor who is jumping like a rubber ball, but is not able to keep the same rhytme during 5 seconds. Bravo, Villazon, avanti! P.S. Sorry for the grammatic errors :)
I just read on Parterre Box that Villazon is going to sing Mimi in La Boheme! This is going to be a history making event! As we all know, he's fabulous in this and any repertoire.
Villazon is a buffoon. Like Dessay, they care only about themselves...If you've seen them live it's like they're on drugs...Anything to distract the fact that their once "nice" voices are simply...Fading...Away...bye bye...
Furthermore, Hillevifan, Villazon sings this aria with the jubilation it requires. Certainly, he is no Didonato, but he need not be. He brings something different to it. I do hope, however, that he sings mostly "true" tenor arias on this recording. I don't mind him stealing a few soprano/mezzo arias, but Handel's true tenor arias are a joy. And we've never heard a voice this rich in this repertoire. At least not since Fritz Wunderlich.
OMG horrible... i don't know why he continues singing this type of repetorie that his voice obviously isn't attuned to, its often grotesque and unlistenable
You are in no position to mock deride Villazon's foray into the Baroque repertoire, given your grotesque and unlistenable renditions of Sesto's arias from GIULIO CESARE. Villazon is quite fine in this repertoire. Moreover, his decision to record arias such as "Dopo notte" is not without precedent. Handel once assigned "Rejoice Greatly," a soprano aria, to a tenor. Lurcanio, the tenor role in ARIODANTE, was originally written for a soprano.
Such things write people, who don't have any other arguments. But you see, singing is his profession, not my :) If I were in my profession so like he in his, I would sit without work :)
The list of arguments is so long that it's hardly summarizable. But for someone whose job and skills have nothing to do with music (at least according to himself), I'll try to explain it using very simple words: Although Rolando is a romantique singer, the baroque repertoire is suited to him; his voice is amazingly flexible, his tone rich, yet sufficiently light not to make him sound odd, his diction impeccable and his commitement to the part breathtaking expressiveness wise.
I hope I've managed to phrase my explanation in a simple enough way, so you can understand it. Oh, before I forget, you may want to say "singing is his profession, not mine" instead of "not my". I'm sure you'll soon realise that using correct grammar may prove useful :).
