what stopped the EV1 from becoming successful!? The GD car/oil industry crushed it! People LOVED that car. And I just LOVE it how they are acting like now is the time the people want alternate types of transportation. Like 10ish years ago we didn't want it, or were not ready....give me a break...it really blows my mind that a business as a whole took this long to make variations to automobiles. Once again, it's not what we want; it's what they want to give us...
Military guys living in the barracks probably won't be able to have one of these. We don't get garages to park in and there really aren't places around where we can leave our cars to charge for 8 hours. Bummer.
@TheMisterYang That infrastructure is coming. Here in Portland they are supposed to be putting up 1,100 charging stations by the end of 2011. Of course military bases probably won't have them for a long time, but in the future the EV (even pure EVs) will be completely viable everywhere.
This should have been done 10 or 15 years ago. It's like just attacking a stage 4 cancer tumor. Chances of saving the pt are slim but better then nothing.
Doesn't coal fuel 80% of the world's power stations, making this is a coal powered vehicle, right? She didn't mention coal, or the film -Who killed The Electric Car? (GM did)
No she didn't. I would have bought an electric several months ago, but the only thing available $100,000 Tesla or a golf cart.
If I was mechanically inclined I would get one those kits they sell on ebay that will convert certain disels to run on used McDee's french fry grease.
GM really FUCKED up out of pure Stupidity and Greed! Lazy and incompetent CEO's making millions on the sweat of the workers, then blaming the unions. Now, they're trying to revive the electric car that they abandoned for profit. I believe they sold the patents to the Japanese. If they kept developing it back then, they would be revolutionary, instead of reactionary (and too late at that)! Remember how the Swiss sold the quartz patents to Japan out of arrogance? Quartz movement is superior.
Why did GM DESTROY their excellent electric cars in the early 1990's??? Bunch of sell-outs to the oil companies. Now, 20 years later they try to redeem themselves? Too little, too late GM, you're not even a private company anymore. Good job.
@Torontoboi before you comment know what your talking about. The electric car of the 1990's was a small two seater that could run 70 miles on a full charge and cost GM 100,000 dollars to make. Yet, they were charging leasing cost of a 34,000 car. That sounds like it would be real profitable for GM. Go read something before coming on here and giving your mind.
And for the record I'm not a GM fanboy, and do not think this type of car can be profitable for many years.
When will it be available to buy? Please don't tell me GM will only lease them. We've been down that road before.

I'd rather drive on Wyoming coal than Iraqi oil

@JeffTheCanuck2, in the USA it is 49% coal, this can be reduced. So, electric cars are 80% efficient while gas is bout 30%
