My father used to sing this to me and my brother when we were two little boys in the mid 1970s it always makes me cry! Miss you dad as much today as when you left us!
The instruments kind of ruin it for me. I first heard this in Trainspotting and I thought that it was an awesome song. A sadder version should be made.
just sent this to my grandchildren as their daddies loved it, you cant beat these old songs, looking at these comments so many people have enjoyed it,it does bring back great memories
Heard this today on R2 with Tony Blackburn as he was counting the 60 best songs from the 60's and this was in the top 10. I'm not ashamed to say a tear or two was shed. Should be re-released.
Great song makes me cry everytime in a good way . Makes me think about my best mate we had GOOD times when we were two little boys . My dad also sang this to us now i sing it . This song will live for ever with me ...
why are not the aussie children at primary school taught this anymore its a great iconic song right?? ??? its a terrible shame and probably what our kids need to give them some unity and understanding what it means to be an aussie from an young age, instead of teaching them, different languages, rights, about fags/gay people, heroin needles, prostitutes etc, what a mess. hope all do gooder,s get raped by a mutated albino spider monkey. its a bueatiful song and goes straight to the heart.....
Way different tune than what me, and my dad, and my grandma, and great grandpa were taught. Great Grandpa would sing it to Grandma, and she sand it to dad, and he sand it to me! Grandma died in November and this was sung at her funeral. Im gunna sing this to my kids... :*)
My Dad used to sing this to us when we were kids. Used to make me cry then. I'm 40 now & I just found this... made me cry just like it did when Dad sang it.
I heard rold harris sing abit of this on the radio the other day... im 22 and i cnt say its the type of song id normally listend to but its so moving and quite catchy... i love it. rip all them who have fallen xx
My father taught me this song in the 70's and it was my party piece at a family get together.I cant wait to get my wee boy singing this,i bet i will cry watching him the way my dad watched me.Peace.
This was bought for me by my parents for my 4th birthday, March, 1970. I played it endlessly. Loved it then.....still do. Now I have wee boys of my own and after the BBC programme on 11th November, which I've since watched a few times on the i player, it has added poignancy and the eyes do get a bit watery, I don't mind admitting. I hope the re-release does well. Good on ya, Rolf.....R.I.P William Jenkin Bevan, d 15th August, 1915
never heard this song until my dad told me to researh it for rememberence day and i am so glad i found it because is such a stirring song and it should be remembered
Very emotional song, been sang at certain events I have been at. He was on bbc earlier revisiting where his dad and uncle fought in the great war. Very moving.
A great video to a great song, I still remember being at Southampton V Derby County, when at the end of the match the Derby fans in the away end sang this song...awesome as well.

@thatgamer87 When I was 14, I could not believe how stupid my father was! When I was 20, I could not believe how much he had learned in 6 years!

I have a hard time listening to this song because my grandmother taught it to me and when I hear it, it reminds me of her.

I think Sir Harry Lauder was the first to sing this. Does anyone know if there is a recording available?

Takes me back to childhood, loved it then and still do. Also brings a tear to my eye as it did then, perhaps more now.

i think it reminds us that we are not children very long before we have to face adult life, then we remember when we were little boys....and girls.

2:40 is probably the most moving picture I've ever seen
Always gives me a lump in my throat
And the song doesnt help that lump either but its still brilliant
