What works for me in Texas is a 50 cc scooter (2009 Aprilia sportcity one 50) for in town and a 2009 500 cc Vulcan for faster roads. I put way more miles on the scooter though. Really, to take advantage of great mileage and keeping up with traffic, you need two bikes. Owning just one and expecting it to do both is not possible although something like the GZ250 from Suzuki comes close. It gets 65 mpg and will go 70 but not well. I still like having two bikes better.

I'm not even sure what 50cc scooters are for anymore. Used to be, you didn't need a driver's license and the bikes were really cheap. Now a days, you need a driver's license (not motorcycle in colorado anyway) and you can buy a decent used motorcycle for the same price if not cheaper than many of the new scooters. If you have some experience riding a scooter, the MSF training course isn't going to be very difficult. I'm trying to get my girlfriend to finally make the leap.

you should know that the largest scooter tuning scene is in europe, especially in eastern europe because its illegal in central europe. most people dont drive maxi scooters in here, but smaller ones, most popular are e.g. the yamaha aerox, piaggio nrg, gilera runner, peugeut jet force, aprilia sr, peugeut speedfight and so on.. just search for them on youtube and you will find many high end scooters that would kick your car's asses ;)
