Cher should have won the award 2 years earlier for "Mask". Even she says that her best performance in Mask and that she didn't feel she deserved to win for Moonstruck. This was a "sympathy Oscar" because she wasn't even nominated for her brilliant performance in Mask. The Academy rarely gives out the Oscar for her right performance.
17th nomination for Meryl Streep, which she will lose against micheall willams -.- AGAIN, and they don't even bother giving her just 1 MORE!! ONLY F**ing 1. I mean she lost 15 times lol.
BTW, does anyone realise that cher won the oscar and we're talking about Meryl? XD
What a shame that Cher never really had the film career she deserved; Her work in "Mask" and "Silkwood" was also Oscar-worthy (I don't believe the Academy was rewarding just this one performance).
yeah, yeah, yeah, its true, is more difficult to do comedy than drama, thats why Cher got nominated. but hell no! i bet all my money that any other actress could do alex Forrest the way Glenn Close did it. i mean, please did the academy voters saw fatal atraction, i dont think so. sorry Cher, but Glenn Close deserved so badly. and alsothe next year for dangerous liaisons.
Meryl Streep is SUCH a classy lady. She was so genuinely happy for her friend. Cher deserved it, for sure. LOVE Moonstruck. And she delivered the entire speech with one earring in. Haha.
'I've never won anything from my peers" and then shockingly ignores her own peers in the film. Not one single thank you - or even mention of any of her co-stars (including two nominees) who were sitting right in front of her. (Olympia Dukakis - Best supporting Actress - came and hugged Cher when her name was announced) . No thanks for Norman Jewison (nominated) for choosing her and directing her, or John Patrick Shanley ( Best Screenplay Oscar for the script) who wrote the role for her. Sad.
@johnplank listen again...she didnt name then by name but did thank everyone that worked with her on the film. i think that about took care of all them you think?
@johnplank I fully agree. This was quite a lame spech if you ask me, no offense to Cher talifans. And I also think Sally Kirkland should have won that evening. I liked Cher better in "Mask".
One of my favorite movies..finally a light hearted feel good romantic comedy won something instead of always the screaming and crying dramas..I love those too..but just so happy she won this! SNAP OUT OF IT!! BTW..That Paul Newman...mmmmm
Kirkland's reaction is hilarious! Cher didn't deserve it, for Christ's sake. Kirkland and Close were the best, in my opinion. I mean, a nomination is alright, but a win? She didn't have to do anything great in the film.
You know I keep reading how Cher did not deserve to win, well I think that is because her performance is in a "feel- good comedy" as opposed to the others who were in really deep ,dark dramatic roles like Ms Close and Ms Streep, but if you ask any actor worth a hill of beans including those 2 I have just named they will tell you it's much more difficult to do comedy then drama, and Oscar has always snubbed the best comedies. I have seen all the performances and YES Cher deserves to be there!!!!
@TheGordojo I agree. Cher was cute and Moonstruck was a good film for its time, but Close was all time worthy and Fatal Attraction is still a chilling film to this day.
I LOVE PAUL NEWMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! he's such a gentleman he went up to help cher up the stairs! he's so handsome right until the very end.... i wish he was still with us!
@bomoregie it is clear with your comment "losing an Oscar to the singer who would later record believe" has failed to realize that this was the Oscars not the Grammys and her singing had nothing to do with her winning her well deserved Oscar! Moonstruck was a great movie with great performances including Chers! Now Meryl Streep is the Queen of all actresses and with every character she plays there's a magnefic movie to be seen! But Cher Moonstrucked the Academy!!
@vermonttenor how can you say "NEVER gets it right"? just look at the 3 people commenting before you all had different but very definite opinions on who was the right choice, the academy is an aggregate of something like 3000 different people voting so its as right or wrong as anything. What you should've said is "The academy NEVER picks what I want to win" that would have been more accurate. yep.
Meryl Streep--what a wonderful lady. She was more happy for Cher than anyone, even though she was robbed. Ironweed is one of her best performances ever.
Love this Video! Sally Kirkland really thought she was gonna win, LOL! Her performance was good but compared to the others she was definitely the weakest link! Brava Cher!

Me and the girls in my nieghborhood would all hang out and sing with you with our candles. And I loved the way you would put your tongue across your teeth.
