Cher should have won the award 2 years earlier for "Mask". Even she says that her best performance in Mask and that she didn't feel she deserved to win for Moonstruck. This was a "sympathy Oscar" because she wasn't even nominated for her brilliant performance in Mask. The Academy rarely gives out the Oscar for her right performance.

Not one single thank you - or even mention of any of her co-stars (including two nominees) who were sitting right in front of her. (Olympia Dukakis - Best supporting Actress - came and hugged Cher when her name was announced) . No thanks for Norman Jewison (nominated) for choosing her and directing her, or John Patrick Shanley ( Best Screenplay Oscar for the script) who wrote the role for her. Sad.

You know I keep reading how Cher did not deserve to win, well I think that is because her performance is in a "feel- good comedy" as opposed to the others who were in really deep ,dark dramatic roles like Ms Close and Ms Streep, but if you ask any actor worth a hill of beans including those 2 I have just named they will tell you it's much more difficult to do comedy then drama, and Oscar has always snubbed the best comedies. I have seen all the performances and YES Cher deserves to be there!!!!

The movie was mainly about Meryls character, and Cher was her girlfriend. Very well done movie, highly recommend!!!

I never understood the hype over this performance. I've always considered Moonstruck a cutesy romantic comedy, but I wouldn't call it a spectacular movie. If I remember correctly, I once read somewhere that Cher openly campaigned for the Oscar, so maybe that's why she won it.
