i've driven this e r-tronic before and the jerky shifts are because it's in sport. the shifts are alot harder, in comfort or just normal automatic its not near as hard.
thing is.. you don't buy an r8 for moving your airbags around. you buy it for the purpose of having fun. if driving is your job, then, of course, you need the best comfort and ease of use. and it's allan's job as well. but driving a sportcar is a purpose in itself, and i'd want it to be more challenging and interesting, so i think a manual is the way. though it's up to everyone to decide for themselves.
I'd rather ave te manual, so I can man andle the car, and it makes me feel more manly to drive a manual, manualse are wayyyy more fun and rewarding. who cares about faster laptimes when your aving way more fun with themanual.
1:48-1:50'ish...Thats a stupid reason, why not to drive manual. 1 hand on the wheel? The Japanese mastered it in the Louge. This car is very nice in a 6-spd manual.
@hilroar I 100% agree with you, that is such an excuse for not driving the car to it´s limit, I dont understand how did he make to a Le Mans champion like that, he doesnt even can shift a gear and drive a car at the same time. I know there are semi automatic shifts systems on those cars, but come on, a race driver that complains on how to shift a gear is way stupid.
He prefers paddles, because he can't handle a true stick. His moves @ 2:40 shows us this.
Having the ability to successfully juggle steering, throttle/brake modulation, and shifting duties is the mark of a true driver. But at least E shift opens up the pleasure of sporty driving to those who aren't as talented behind the wheel.
@LateNightCable umm this guy is used to be an f1 driver and is a Le Mans Driver, how can u even begin to judge his skills? internet fuckwads like you provide endless entertainment
First off you ill mannered douche bag, you yourself have no clue who you're talking to, and secondly, am I supposed to know who this guy is, because he's nobody in America.
@LateNightCable This guy is Alan McNish, He is a Hugely talented driver. It's all well and good you saying that Vegetto456 has no idea who he is talking to; do you have any proof behind this? Are you just trying to act the usual Internet 'hard' man?
not acting the internet 'hard man', just stating a fact, nobody knows who anybody really is, so it's best not to presume. And McNish doesn't display very good form in this video.
@LateNightCable I can see where McNish goes wrong in this video, constantly hitting the rev limiter.. what the hell is all that about. But saying that, i've never driven an "R-Tronic" so would'nt know.
@sakimano he was letting it hit the limiter. And those motors are made to be ran that hard. You could run that motor on Redline for a good solid minute and you'd be fine.
This car is beautiful the only thing that audi needs to work on is weight. A 2 seat supercar should not weigh 3700lbs. Take a page from the mclaren f1. That is why the corvette is cheap speed. They keep the weight down, albeit with a cheap plasticky interior but you cant deny the results.
There are cars that are made ONLY for the track (which are a nightmare to drive on the street) and there are cars made for both the street and the track. This car is one of the best in the world at being a fun fast car on the track and also liveable on the street.
On the other hand, when Audi releases the R8 GT next year, it will lose over 230 lbs and get 35 more horsepower. That car will eat almost anything on the road alive.
Agree, I'll be happy with if I can get my hands on a normal R8 400hp is well enough for me. and much cheaper. The only competitor is the Austin Martin V8 and the 911. Now the Austin is very pretty, but the R8 just feels way cooler.
@GrappyFlappy That jerk is from going OFF and ON to power. It's a sports car you want it to emulate the way you would change the gears when you are driving a manual in a track and even faster and harder, to smooth it up you need to delay the gear changes which defeats its purpose. There should be a slower setting for the city though that is a lot smoother.
twin clutch gear boxes are awesome in race track. all the f1 cars have that, because it is quicker especially when you have 7 gears that are raving at 15k rpm. no human can change gears quick as those electronic witchcraft. most of the new twin clutch gear boxes are not that jerky. plus, if you have 500+ hp, good throttle response, and closely ratio gears, good luck shifting smoothly without griding your clutch
but i still think its much more fun to drive a proper manual six speed gearbox.
Of course there are clowns like wolfan0 and FUFU9820 at home that can drive better than McNish. That's why we know some much about their victories over the years at LeMans. Go back to playing with your XBox losers.
the rtronic and other flappy flippy floppy floopy paddle automated clutch manuals w/e you wanna call them are only good on a track. have fun trying to park when the you have no control over the clutch.
plus, the gearchange is always jerky, even in auto slush mode, and the way i see it, the only people who will take the rtronic (just as the people who specced the f1 box on the 430) are people with more money than sense, who don't know how to use a real manual.
Well I suggest getting off the couch, stop wasting time playing video games and get an education and then a job. Don't EVER limit your self by saying; "I cant" Or "I'm not good enough."
oh yeah i see the drivers hands move on the steering wheel now. i was confused cos whenever the gears shift you could see the other guy move his left hand. lol
And another thing Americans - stop taking EVERYTHING personally, we're sick of it. We don't make good gut busting cheeseburgers, fine, that's YOUR game. We make good cars.
Dodge Viper - 8.0 litre, 500hp??
Give a European 8.0 litres and we'll come up with a BIT more than that.. Hang your heads.
HAHAHA! good cars??? if u guys make good cars, then how come there are no Irish cars in America? Is the Dodge viper brand new news to u? ooohhh, 500 h.p...the viper uses a V10 n it still cant bring down a corevtte
screw u. american cars last alot longer than foreign cars. besides, there are NO foreign vehicles that have gone OVER 2 million miles within 30 years.
Watch the documentary "Truth in 24" about Audi at the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, then let's see if you still want to talk trash about Allan McNish. SPOILER ALERT: He wins the race.
Michael Schumacher is a legend. By far one of the best Formula 1 drivers in history. And you think he isn't a good driver? Wow, are you Mario Andretti? If not you must be totally clueless.
You can't compare Schumacher and Andretti. Those old-time drivers didn't have all these electronic aides and nannies like a mordern era (especially) F1 drivers.
R Tronic DOES NOT HAVE 2 clutches. It's the same system they use in Lamborghini cars. The duo clutch transmission audi uses is called the S Tronic. That's it.
Not True, the R8 4.2 uses the Dual clutch Transmission but its called R-Tronic.
The R-Tronic for the 5.2 is the Lambo's E-gear, and which makes sense because they match, no need to revise and make changes to the Dual Clutch Transmission
i prefer the stick shift on the V8 edition. i think its sounds alot better than the V10. thats just my opinion. what does suck is that audi wont make a TDI R8 anymore, from what i read on diesel power magazine.
Are you guys kidding me? McNish is a great driver, he knows what he is doing, he has won Le Mans several times. What can you say to that? Maybe he doesn't know this car that well but put him in a LMP1 and there are few who are better.

Switching to the v10 for a quicker rd is cool, and i like both, but personally i think they should have kept the v8 swapped for lower compression pistons and did a turbo setup, instead of just taking a gallardo motor and dropping it in which is basically what they did
This guy had a bad crash last le mans

DARKRIGUE 2 years ago 2
It all depends. If you're driving an R8 on a closed race track then you'll most likely get better track times with the Dual Clutch R Tronic.
On open highways or back roads I'd have more fun with a manual as you have more control over the car's behavior.
DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
R Tronic DOES NOT HAVE 2 clutches. It's the same system they use in Lamborghini cars. The duo clutch transmission audi uses is called the S Tronic. That's it.

Thanks for correcting me, you're right the R Tronic is 1 clutch. The S Tronic is 2.
DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
Not True, the R8 4.2 uses the Dual clutch Transmission but its called R-Tronic.
The R-Tronic for the 5.2 is the Lambo's E-gear, and which makes sense because they match, no need to revise and make changes to the Dual Clutch Transmission

He wasn't even close to losing control. He was giving an example and that was totally on purpose.

ARE YOU DUMB? At 1:47 he's just showing what can happen with manual gearbox.
At 2:02, there's nothing wrong about hitting the rev limiter, personally, I'm addicted to that sound

Sounds a lot like a NSX. The R8 is such a wicked car!

if i could shit money i'd get the v8 version, just has a better sound to me.
FatGuyWithAKatana 2 years ago
Switching to the v10 for a quicker rd is cool, and i like both, but personally i think they should have kept the v8 swapped for lower compression pistons and did a turbo setup, instead of just taking a gallardo motor and dropping it in which is basically what they did
stock881 2 years ago
and and then de-tuning the gallardo engine
Mario4Italy 2 years ago
the gallardo V10 was designed based on the architecture of Audi's V8.... Remember that was when Audi bought them and saved them from obscurity...
Amidat 2 years ago
the v10 sounds way better imo, and when it comes to supercars, v10's are always better. v8's are too american.

hes right on with the paddle shifters,,,shifting in the corners is a weak point for me,,,,
