I remember this day very well, I was on the USA '99 tour, I have my own camcorder footage of the 'through the station' rides, I went on several times. I think the operator guy finished that day, he wanted to go out with a cheer, he'll always be remembered by the coaster club members who enjoyed that rare experiance. I sure remember!
I remember riding the outlaw on a slow day 8 times in a row :) We stopped every time. The ride operator should of slowed down the ride first then let them go again. Adventureland has 70 yr old operators now... sometimes they forget to hit the stop botton. LOL
ps- Adventureland needs updated roller coasters, I dont go anymore because there is nothing new to ride :( and its more like a free standing carnival :(
@davidjellis sorry, i don't know how i missread that .) woops nice footage. mustave been an amazing experince despite all the wear and tear it put on the ride.
@lirr56890 - As I understood things he was quitting that day...I have no idea if he was reprimanded though...was kind of foolish, but as a rider I loved the experience.
last time i rode this ride it messed my back up, when is Adventureland going to knock down the outlaw and dragon and put up newer better costers, if they did that they would double their business
Now that's what I call a true station fly through. I wonder if there was any legal action taken against the former employee when he got sacked by Adventureland.
i remember i did that an old man let me do the 2 times b4 the line got some people it was mte and my brother and about 2 other kids, and the ride is self done not by a computer, ive been on this a million times.
Also, why would a park voluntarily agree to run a coaster like that, adding wear and tear to the track and putting riders at serious risk of injury? I don't think so!
I have been to hundreds of enthusiast exclusive riding sessions, and parks simply wouldn't act so irresponsibly.
@davidjellis Having worked rides at Adventureland, I can tell you that they have no flipping idea what they are doing. I got no real training and safety standards are incredibly low. They are going to have a major accident someday.
Although we had a blast on this coaster, the fact that (former) employees are concerned about lack of safety processes / training at an amusement park is very worrying. Thanks for sharing.
@davidjellis Oh definitely, Outlaw is a fantastic ride. Very underappreciated IMO. But yeah, my training basically consisted of being told to come to the commissary for my (one fifteen-minute) break and then being led to my first ride, which was Tornado. The guy there gave a basic overview of how to check the lapbars and that was it. And we also got a new ride every week, and if you didn't know how to work the new one, other employees were expected to fill you in.
Not good on newer coasters but ESPECIALLY not on older ones. It can snap something. However, I and many others at Opryland were guilting of shooting the coaster through. And yes, it would climb half way up the first lift. We were young and dumb. What did we know? The public loved it. All manual brakes too.
Surprised I don't here the traditional screaming. Is the ride normally that tame? (It looks like an interesting track layout though). It seems that the riders only made a peep during the station "fly by". Is this a GCI coaster?
I think the coaster is normally an ok ride, but perhaps not designed as a totally wild experience. The ride is CCI (Custom Coasters International). Most of the riders were coaster club members so wouldn't scream on a coaster anyway...but there were public on the ride too...I guess they may have been silenced by the experience!
@jukingeo this isnt a GCI coaster, but the two engineers that formed GCI used to be part of Custom Coasters International back in the early 90's before they formed GCI and the designed this one for CCI and it opened in 1993.
That wouldn't happen as the cars are literally locked to the rails by way of the wheel design. Same reason why the cars don't fly off the track when you crest a hill. However as the poster says the operator probably added more wear and tear than what that section was designed for. More then likely maintenance had to check the track gauge immediately and also if any of the wheels were damaged. And this is outside of the injuries that could have resulted taking unbanked curves at speed.
Awesome, Was the guy like ( Into the station mic ) Im trying to get sacked, so um, you all get 2 rides in a row =) ) Have a good day, and thanks for helping me get sacked. Lol This looks wicked awesome.
I was on the ride many times without the brakes that day, it was fantastic, been back since and it was not the same. Yes it was risky but would do it again
Fantastic...someone else who was there! I bet that was a bit of a shock to experience that! Is that your local park then? Do you know if anything happened to the operator that day (like arrested or anything)? Hope the video brought it all back!
What I am surprised at is that the main brake run could be defeated. Normally that is controlled by a computer. Granted all coasters are different, but generally the first brake run is computer controlled and is usually 'on' and this bleeds off most of the speed from the train. Then there is another brake which has more manual control (which should normally be 'on')and then finally the station brakes. So if he defeated that computer, I am surprised he didn't get locked up for that stunt.
The old one train CCIs didn't have any type of PLC. The brakes basically stay closed by default and there is a button to release them on the panel (and a second one for the station set). Any calipers staying closed in the video were just the operator not holding the release button in time. Quite a few rides still run with this setup and they aren't very efficient even when not being abused. I have overshot the brakes on both Zeus (op error) and Excalibur (train just didn't stop consistently).
@freddielololol - oh yeah! I've overshot it many times myself at Opryland and then tell the guests to take one giant step to the left. LOL! Rockin Roller Coaster had the old friction brakes. Hot day - full load - rain? Sometimes it wouldn't even stop going through the entire brake run. I've had to shut a lift off to stop it before during a heavy downpour in 100 degree heat.
@jukingeo - older coasters don't have computers. Many wooden coasters have a manual pull back type brake. Older steel coasters have hydraulic brakes but are manually operated. You can hold all the brake buttons down and shoot the coaster through is what we used to call it. Most have been retro-fitted now but when I worked at Opryland, the brakes were manual. It was all timing and rhythm to stop it and line it up correctly. Much more fun.
It was amazing...just good luck we were there on that day. No idea how many lateral Gs it pulled, but you can get a good idea from the footage! One of those never-to-be-repeated experiences. Just pleased I had it all on tape.

I don't know what he was able to do, but you can see from the footage that the train only barely slowed down before shooting through the station.
