'Ferdin left the acting world in the 1980s and became a registered nurse. She married surgeon and fellow animal-rights activist Jerry Vlasak in 1986.
In 1996 she quit her job as director of public relations for the Center for Animal Care and Control, a nonprofit organization under contract to the New York City Department of Health. She claimed there was mismanagement in the agency.'
Yes that was Jonathan Harris "Dr Smith" from Lost In Space. And here's another little bit of trivia. Both Pamalyn Ferdin and Brian Tochi werre in the Star Trek Episode And A Child Shall lead them when they were younger children.
@MonkeesLuv62 - I remember that show! Wow that brings back memories! I remember the other two actors who played in "Star Trek" but can't remember which one? Was it from " Star Trek"- TNG? Or one of the others?
@MonkeesLuv62 - Ok, I remember now! That was that episode with the orphaned children on that colony planet that was being controlled by that alien that was using them. Thanks!
To Daisyno2: Pam Ferdin! Yuck! She appeared in a lot of 70s shows. As a kid, I never knew why. She was a good actress who definitely had the "girl next door" quality, but I would hardly call her a babe. The girls from "Wonderbug," "Electra Woman & Dyna Girl" -- now there's some hotties! "SA" and "Jason of Star Command" were good, but for Saturday SciFi, nothing beat "Ark II." It held up the best over time; plus J. Harris' cameos were closer to the wit of his irrepressible Dr. Smith.
I would have loved to see Harris portraying Gampu just once slip into his old Dr. Smith character and freak out screaming "WHOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHHH WILLIAM!!!!!!!! TAKE THE BOY SPARE ME!"
Did anyone notice that they used the same interior set for the Seekers in Space Academy and for Jason's ship in Jason of Star Command, even though the two ships looked completely different on the outside?
@Daisyno2 Maggie Cooper..she was the hottie. But then I also loved Connie Seleca on Real American hero, Wonder Woman was a fave, and Joanie on Happy Days. lol
I liked this show. I'm sure they used it as a replacement for Shazam! They had some famous actors on it but I'm sure it was low budget in so many ways.
remember this was the same year they had "LASER LIGHT SHOWS" at the State Fair and charged people $2.50 to sit in a tent and watch red and green lasers move around on the ceiling.
What else was there in 1979 besides "Threes Company"?
This is it! Amazing, I was thinking about this one and another about a dude named Jason the other day. I used to watch these on my youth days. They were dubbed in Spanish though...Awesome, thanks for sharing...
This is a novelty in that Jonathan Harris was the hero this time.(chuckle!)He was praised by a critic as being fine in his role.
He was one of the people I recognized instantly. The other was(need I say?)Pamelyn Ferdin. She was probably 17 or 18 by this time.(She'd come a long way from Curiosity Shop.)
@RJRanke " I'll call him, .. Wilbur !" ... Well I'll be, that WAS her voice in that movie ! Didn't know that before though. Ya know, she was also in a really sick gory slasher-type flick called The Toolbox Murders,.. get this,.. along with that boy from Land Of The Lost !! Their presence in THAT movie somehow renders it even more perverse yet !!

Wow. What a comedown for Jonathan Harris. To be on a classic show like 'Lost in Space' to crap like this. They probably hired him to cash in on his fame. And yes, his hair was indeed, scary.
I got this tv show mixed up with ARK II. I'm 37 and I *do* remember this, but more like a vivid childhood dream. I totally remember all of these faces!!! Amazing!
YEAH! For years, I was thinking of Peepo, & was trying to find him on Ark II! I FINALLY found him! Do you remember the episode, where Peepo was accidentally blasted with some kind of freeze gun, & they had to get the stuff off him, as the material was still unstable & exploded?
SO cheesy!:D Pam Ferdin was on the Curiosity Shop and on an episode of The BRady Bunch where Jan wears that groovy afro wig to her birthday party. I think she's a nurse now.
Maggie Cooper was definately the hottest chick on this show - she was getting to me when I was only 10-11 yrs old - she (and Pam Ferdyn) would sometimes wear the "Miniskirt Uniform" ;)
I especially liked her in the episode "Johnny Spaceseed" where there's a epidemic that makes them act drunk (like on that one ep of Star Trek) and she's sitting on the windowsill of the command center in her short minidress acting all silly & they have to take her out of there...gorgeous!
That was Johnny Sunseed, as played by Dallas McKennon, who was the voice of Archie Andrews (as well as Hot Dog, Mr. Lodge and Coach Cleats) on The Archies. His character was the brother of Commander Gampu as played by Jonathan Harris (1914-2002), who also worked on other Filmation shows such as My Favorite Martians, Uncle Croc's Block and Ark II.
MMM...Maggie Cooooper. Yeah, I used to dig the way she rocked the uniform too. When she grew up, she had a scene in on some show in which she was trying on different dresses or something, and she slipped out of one to reveal a short slip and thigh highs. Whoaaaa...I didn't have a VCR at that time, so I only have memories.
Filmation's animated Star Trek series was originally to be similar to Space Academy with Kirk and his crew with teenage cadet sidekicks. Gene Roddenberry said No to that concept. Space Academy is what could have happened with the animated Star Trek series.
Today, Eric Greene is a laywer and political activist. In fact, if you buy or borrow the DVD, he along with former cast mates Brian Tochi (Tee Gar Soom) and Ric Carrott (Lt. Chris Gentry) are on the documentary feature and there, they will tell you what they have been up to since Space Academy wrapped.
I loved watching this when I was younger. To bad the commander AKA Dr Smith didn't put on his "The Pain" routine on this show. But also, they used the same props for Space Academy as in Star Command.
I remember watching this show when I was little. I always liked the revamped Jason of Star Command better. Did you know that Pamela Ferdin and Brian Tochi appeared together before this in the STAR TREK episode "And the Children Shall Lead"
Come see the REAL International Space Academy! Click on this user "isadashhqdotcom", to go to the International Space Agency (ISA) youtube site. Watch the International Space Academy Introduction Video. Ad-Astra! To The Stars! In Peace For All Mankind!
I well recall Ark II. It ran on CBS in 1976 for 15-episodes & for reruns after that. The Ark was an actual massive land rover which they drove on location outdoors, but I believe that the smaller Seeker space ship was built just for the Space Academy series & used inside a sound stage. The Ark & the Seeker were similarly shaped though.
The reason we (I'm 34) kids watched this stuff, and the reason it was even broadcast was because of Star Wars....Star Wars came out in 1977, then in 1978 you saw this, Jason of Star Command (look at him and tell me they didn't dress him like Han Solo and try to make Dragos like Darth Vader), and Battlestar Galactica. Need I say more?
And not just Star Wars. Remember there was also Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Battlestar Galactica (which some said was a rip off of Star Wars). This was sci-fi at it's finest!
Well comparing Dr.Who and Blake's to a kids show is kinda silly but for a live action kids show in the 70's it was pretty decent. Filmation was better at animated stories but good old uncle Lou loved to tell a story no matter what the medium. Later on Disney would attempt a similar storyline for their Earth Star Voyager pilot.
Yes we DID watch this stuff. A couple of years ago, I watched an episode of "Electro Woman and Dyna Girl." I hadn't seen it since I was a child. And when I watched it, I spent all that time cringing, asking myself WHY did I watch this when I was a child? The answer? Because when your a child, you pretty much would watch ANYTHING!
Aww No!!! Don't make yourself sick over having watched this! I watched it too, but I will always look back and regret having wasted a moment of my youth having watched Scooby Doo, and -worse- The Banana Splits!!! Oh the horror!
Hey...I watched those shows! I think that the 70's and 80's had some of the coolest Saturday morning shows around. According to IMDb, the show ran from 1977-1979.
maybe you can help, there is a cartoon show I remember from around this time, were there was what looked like a Upside down Star Trek Enterprise ship... I barly remember it and I don't have any clue what it was called. Do you know?
She also appeared in an episode of 'The Odd Couple'. The Odd Couple aired in the late 60s, right? Space Academy must have been in the mid 70s. I remember now, she was a pre-teen kid in The Odd Couple. It makes sense.
Sorry I have not posted any clips in a while but I have been really really busy not to mention I was ratted out by someone to the YouTube staff for posting the opening segment of THE TOMORROW PEOPLE. They told me it was copyright infringement and if I did it again my account would be deleted and I could be prosecuted.
Oh well. LOL! I think I may be safe posting more FILMATION stuff in the future since the whole catalog is public domain. I appreciate all of the comments.
Ok, I just creamed my pants after seeing the Jason of Star Command intro, now I just did it again!! I used to love this show as well, although I don't remember it as well as Jason (except for PEEPO the robot - I remembered him but couldn't remember where he was from).

"SPACE ACADEMY" was quite a trivia treat! this, being Filmation's 2nd journey into
science-fiction,after "ARK II" in 1976,and a year before "JASON OF STAR COMMAND"
in 78' both Jonathan Harris and the Robot from "LOST IN SPACE" were running on
the same network,as "THE SKATEBIRDS" segment "Mystery Island used The Robot
as POPS-which was painted white, and slightly altered, but still recognizable! keep in
mind, that the "STAR WARS" blitz heavily influenced TV in fall 1977!

Correction to my last post; I meant to say Captain Chris Gentry!

I never really like SA even as an 8 year old. Jason of Star Command was better in my opinion. So was Ark II. Great memories, though.

I remember it! Jimmy Doohan replaced Jonathan Harris as the teacher later on didn't he?
dalzilla 4 years ago
In a way. Jason of Star Command was a different entity, although it WAS tied into it. And James Doohan played Commander Carnarvin.
AlbieGray 4 years ago
No he never did. James Doohan was on Jason of Star Command.

Anybody remember "Ark II"? I think that's where they got the spaceship from.
boosh4u 4 years ago
Actaully, it was the nose cone from Ark II that was used for the Seeker space ship for Space Academy.
Scarletspeedster68 3 years ago
I well recall Ark II. It ran on CBS in 1976 for 15-episodes & for reruns after that. The Ark was an actual massive land rover which they drove on location outdoors, but I believe that the smaller Seeker space ship was built just for the Space Academy series & used inside a sound stage. The Ark & the Seeker were similarly shaped though.
theironclads 3 years ago
how many seson was it on ???
aped3 4 years ago
It was on for 1 season with another season in reruns

The reason we (I'm 34) kids watched this stuff, and the reason it was even broadcast was because of Star Wars....Star Wars came out in 1977, then in 1978 you saw this, Jason of Star Command (look at him and tell me they didn't dress him like Han Solo and try to make Dragos like Darth Vader), and Battlestar Galactica. Need I say more?
swalk813 4 years ago
And not just Star Wars. Remember there was also Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Battlestar Galactica (which some said was a rip off of Star Wars). This was sci-fi at it's finest!

Oh my I am 10 years old again...

By this time I was watching DR WHO and BLAKE'S 7 so I thought this filmation stuff was crap by comparison.
deadpool2099 4 years ago
Well comparing Dr.Who and Blake's to a kids show is kinda silly but for a live action kids show in the 70's it was pretty decent. Filmation was better at animated stories but good old uncle Lou loved to tell a story no matter what the medium. Later on Disney would attempt a similar storyline for their Earth Star Voyager pilot.

WOW!! I didnt think anyone still remembered this old show.. I used to watch it every week when I was about 6 or so...

Gawdamighty, did we really watch this stuff????
NastySod 5 years ago
Yes we DID watch this stuff. A couple of years ago, I watched an episode of "Electro Woman and Dyna Girl." I hadn't seen it since I was a child. And when I watched it, I spent all that time cringing, asking myself WHY did I watch this when I was a child? The answer? Because when your a child, you pretty much would watch ANYTHING!
whatuswattingat 4 years ago
Aww No!!! Don't make yourself sick over having watched this! I watched it too, but I will always look back and regret having wasted a moment of my youth having watched Scooby Doo, and -worse- The Banana Splits!!! Oh the horror!
Dreaded88 4 years ago
Hey...I watched those shows! I think that the 70's and 80's had some of the coolest Saturday morning shows around. According to IMDb, the show ran from 1977-1979.
whatuswattingat 4 years ago
Correct, but it only had 15 episodes. The rest of the time,it reran them over...and over..and over again.

Pamelyn Ferdin is now an animal rights activist. You can see her in the Penn & Teller's "BULLSHIT!" episode on PETA.
mfnickster 5 years ago
She also appeared in an episode of 'The Odd Couple'. The Odd Couple aired in the late 60s, right? Space Academy must have been in the mid 70s. I remember now, she was a pre-teen kid in The Odd Couple. It makes sense.

Dude do you have a copy of the old CBS show from the mid 80's OtherWorld. It lasted about 1/2 a season and was on Saturday nights.
