This will and has been penalised this year, which i think is ridiculous. Both Brussow and Pocock are so exciting to watch because what they do is so skilful, and im Irish!
Thanks for the vid. I have recently been playing flanker and this will help immensely. BTW what video editing product did you use for this? It's superb.
@shapecutter7 How so?? Clearly Brussouw is on his feet, he does not need to create "Daylight" between himself and the tackled player as he was not the primary tackler....Good analysis and good vid boet!
i absolutely encourage more of this type of response for the spectator who may be concerned, especially when new law-policing arises, to be made. it has depth, and clarity in defending the boks in this new situation, great work
I think that you've found clips that will unfortunately fall foul to referees applying 15.6 (c) as Walter mentions and 15.7 (b) (not mentioned previously but referenced in the link below).
I'd suggest you look at this example from the Feb 20th Waratahs v Stormers game where Phil Waugh himself is penalized. Read also the description written on the SA Referee's website and I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Confusion 37 - your comments are right - HB would have been pinged under the new interpretations.
Gary, while the refs did award the penalties under the type of interpretation they had going then, this will just not work under the new S14 interpretation. ALL hangers-on (including co-tacklers who have stayed on their feet) are to release the player once he is tackled. This gives the attack a split second more to get cleaners in. Best defence is counter ruck and keeping possession.
I see your point there confusion but im not sure how valid it is because Brussow goes for the ball not the player and therefore he is not bringing the player to the ground. and when the player is on ground all ready again he goes for the ball or holds ball down for penalty... that's what i saw anyways..Jay
Walter I await your contact details, where I will email you directly. Some interesting points you make, but with respect I disagree, and so obviously do 2 out of the 3 best refs in the world, namely Nigel Owens and Alain Roland, both of whom awarded us the penalties in these clips.Your comment re the maul is valid and I will reply to you. Will post my answer on the site along with yours. Thanks for responding, it is really appreciated, and rest assured Springbok rugby will be fine I am sure. GG
Players such as Richie McCaw and George Smith have been doing exactly this to us for several years and it's only now that SA players have finally caught on, that the IRB decide to do something about it.
In my opinion this is long overdue. For every occasion where a player manages to steal the ball, there are 10 more where they just manage to slow the ball down. And we all know that getting quick ball is the best way to beat defences!
This is made explicit in Law 15.6 (c): Players in opposition to the ball carrier who remain on their feet who bring the ball carrier to
ground so that the player is tackled must release the ball and the ball carrier. Those players may then play the ball providing they are on their feet and do so from behind the ball and from directly behind the tackled player or a tackler closest to those players goal line.
I'm sorry Gary, but this commentry has made me extremely worried about Springbok rugby for 2010. You couldn't have this more wrong! Each of your examples (except maybe the France one, as that was actually a maul) is exactly the situation refs have been told to prevent from happening this year. The tackler or any player who brings the ball-carrier to ground, must release them and the ball before trying to play it. It doesn't matter whether they stay on their feet or not... they must release!

In hindsight, Phil Waugh's comments were utter rubbish - The S14 Final was contested by two South African teams...
Thanks for a very interesting video Gary, good luck with the EoYT.

Mate you couldn't be more wrong in everyone of these example's!! Everyone of these would result in a 3 pointer to attacking team. Rugby IQ?????
