I enjoyed watching Metropolis today. I usually give a subtitled version the edge over a dubbed version, though I might give the dub a listen at least for an episode or 2, just to enjoy more of the visuals. I have mixed feelings about the ending, though after some thought, find it fitting considering Duke Red's vision of how the neo-Tima would fit into the world of Metropolis. She merged with the city in her own way and Ken-ichi's decision seemed right in light of all that went before.
Good review. Personally, I wouldn't touch an anime that was directed by Rintaro but now that I know Kasuhiro Otomo has wrote the screenplay, I will probably make an exception.
Lol, well Oji-san, if I had any suspicions that the you in the video, and the one making the comments weren't one in the same, they've been abolished now.
Ah Metropolis, I remember when Adult Swim broadcasted it a few years back, I recall being troubled by how all of these deeply existential and mature themes were being presented in a style I likened to 1930s cartoon animation, most notably Popeye...
and the ending, with Tima calling for Kenichi seemingly "beyond the grave" is something that leaves me with goosebumps to this day.
And ah yes, there were many parallels I could make to Evangelion, notably it's own credulous use of an "upbeat" song in its own film, and Tima's "ending look" compared to "Giant Rei", but at least there, I wasn't thinking of other stories I enjoyed as a kid at the same moment, it conveys a feeling that the "innocence" and sense of justice those stories conveyed was only a "fantasy", and that everything, including reality, must ultimately become far more fatalistic.
It's a feeling I don't like, and it's sad I associate it with a work that's truly spectacular in its artistry... just struck the wrong chord with me I'm afraid.
Come to think of it, I was also surprised they were willing to show it, they canceled showing Gundam supposedly over 9/11 concerns, and this film certainly had more direct parallels
Adult swim, their choices for when and where to draw the line seem contradictory, its more like a swerve.

This is one of my favorite anime movies, I don't care what anybody says, this movie is proof that Rintaro has what it takes to be a great director.

Wow, I didn't notice that about the plot at all! Now it all makes sense.

Rented this 4-5 years ago from Blockbuster. It still looks state of the art!

Nice review, bought and watched this film earlier this year, great stuff. (You can never really go wrong with Tezuka's work).
