The girl I was friends with that I liked, ended up going out with another guy last week... I kind of sort of wish I looked like Elvis, then I would of had her.
Oh well, Im mostly over it now, thanks to Gaslight, Mike Ness, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty.
Saw Gaslight a few days ago at Bamboozle. This is the song they came out to. It gives me new found chills to hear the intro already. Best show I've ever been to.
@Nerdomancy that's my favorite part of this song... actually, i like the "i always kinda sorta wished I looked like elvis" because in 'round here, maria said she'd like to meet a boy who looks like elvis... i dunno... i just really like that...
@Nerdomancy Actually, I think that also goes WAY back to "love in vain" by robert johnson... But I'm not really sure, 'cause there are no Nashville references there... (nor Marias)
Fantastic song, love how it folds the other songs into it without a seam. This isn't a bad thing, but doesn't the bass line sound a little like the theme from "Knight Rider?"
Brian Fallon is my favourite singer and The Gaslight Anthem are the best underated band i the world they deserve to be up in the charts with all the other good bands of this century
@DarraghC152 You are truly an idiot if you think all of the other good bands of the century are up in the charts. You are also truly an idiot if you think that even half of the bands that are up in the charts are good.
Great band, don't get me wrong but the chores of this song reminds me a lot of the lyrics of 'Round Here' from The Counting Crowes ' Maria came from Nashville withe a suitcase in he hand. She said she'd like to meet a boy like Elvis' . Is that line stolen?
Actualy i hear a lot of T.G.A. invluences on this album. Also many lyrics and thougts are from Bruce Springsteen and other older punkbands.
Well anyway, The '59 is one of my fouvourite album from 2008!!!!!!
Sort of - the line from Counting Crowes is 'Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in he hand. She said she'd like to meet a boy like Elvis' - The GA one is similar, but that he wished he looked like Elvis. As well as a nod to the band, its a response - Whilst she is looking for one type of guy (like Elvis), he wishes he could be that guy... it's kind of sad as it goes on, cos he always 'wished he was someone else'. I read it a dedication to all the white knight guys who never got the girl.
This song even borrows lyrics from August and Everything after "Ria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand......"
Ive just bought this album. Im 28 and been a music obsessive since 16 but i havent felt this way about an album in so many years. I cant stop listening to it.
Stealing? This song is all about paying homage to Tom Petty, Springsteen and CC. Good job being a moron though. God damn I hate people so much these days.
Have any of you heard the first song of Counting Crows debut album - Round Here? "Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand. She said she'd like to meet a boy who looks like Elvis". Fallon must have been thinking about that song when he wrote this one; "And Maria from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand. I always kinda, sorta wished I looked like Elvis."
He makes references to 3 songs that I am aware of - 'Round Here, Springsteen's On Fire, & Tom Petty's Southern Accents. I think it makes this song all the more special...
there are actually dislikes..?

Saw them last night. One of the best live shows ever. Especially in an intimate setting like the smaller venues.
