Genitive is the "wessen" (whose) case. You use it when there's possession or when the noun is the object of a genitive preposition. ex. Ich verstehe nicht die Grammatik der Sprache. Ich bin außerhalb der Schule.

If you need to, learn more about what a direct object, indirect object, or preposition is. And make sure you know all the forms of "the" for each case and which case each preposition takes. Hope this helps.
