I find it really interesting. I am usually concerned, when the setting is adapted from such a powerful musical, that the moral might suffer. But it is evident that the message and content of the show was respected on such a profound level here, and the meaning still rang through the performance. It is mind-blowing, the strength that this group of people has. One of most brilliant performances of this material I have ever seen!
Somehow Amsterdam and Hair seem like a match made in Hippie Heaven.
Whenever I go through Amsterdam I remember the hippie part of my life. I still adhere to a good 20 to 30% of the values and philosophy, the rest I've scrapped for the better.
Even though some of the words I didn't understand, but understood the sentiment, this was an outstanding performance. As a child of the 60s, it's amazing that many of the things Hair "spoke" about is still happening today. Thank you so much for posting this video.
I can not get this song out of my head. It deeply affects me and my life as an activist. Thank you so much for this best version of this song from Hair.
Hawt men, beautiful production of a fave since I was a kid (My mum was an Aldermaston Marcher and CND hardcore) - but - no surrender! lol only mucking about, but, no - DON'T!
its interesting to see how it wold be done in the future, but changing this is no good, it does change the story in so many ways and the multitude of it all, Ie- Justin Timberlake has no fame compaired to M. Jagger, sorry that ruins that whole scene, and taking the "tribe" out of NYC where they were most famous changes what the authors wanted, god do i hope McDermot, and crew gave permision, or non the less didnt and you just did it, it changes it SOOO MUCH.
"do not enter induction center, do not enter induction center!!!! Black white yellow red copulate in a kingsize bed!!!" This is a stayover from the "traditional" version with the draft and stuff, y'know?
interesting. It's possible that it's part of the lyric/lines that the new director julie taymor revived from the original pre-broadway script, seeing as the show underwent a major overhaul in transition to broadway. With the Broadway revival (not this, btw. this is different), Taymor added a bunch of lines back in that she felt were resonant today. In any case, the line is is both this version and in the "revival" soundtrack (just a little later--like 2 lines later than here)
One of the best performances of this song I have seen in my life so far . . . .Some parts could be better . . . But the outcome was amazing .Would love to see the full performance .
This is THE best production, at least as far as the cast's performance is concerned.VERY powerful, nothing like hair current broadway production...Does mark consider broadway by the wa?.definitely BEST Claude besides james rado!!!Gavin Creel bite his dust!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
yes, that is why Gavin was nominated for a tony along with Will Swenson and the cast won. but yeah, it is just horrible. the women in the revival cast are absolutely phenominal as well. especially Allison Case.
I agree, this is definitely one of the best productions I've seen and is closer (in spirit) to the original Off B'Dway production than most since. IMO ego has trumped art to such an extent that the message has been lost.
well, i would agree if i hadn't seen this cast work tireslessy all around NY for causes in the park, downtown, parades, etc singing their hearts out for free on their down time, which isn't much when you are in a broadway show. no ego there my friend...they believe in the cause of Hair. their passion is outstanding and i don't know if you have seen the revival but if you have, i wonder how you can make that statement...it is mindblowing.
...teh broadway cast started off in the park and i saw the broadway cast live, and have heard them talk abou thte show and i see everything they do for marrigue equality and stuff, and just how much they believe in the show and how gratfuel tehy are to be part of somthing so beautiful....that is passio
I can remember Pete Straker from the London cast in the 60's, brilliant - also has Oliver Tobias as Berger and, unfortunately, Paul Nicholas as Claude, he had all the charisma of a wet dish cloth.
As Claud says, "Wenn ich unsichtbar bin, kann ich Wunder vollbringen." or , "If I am invisable, I can work miracles". It is his spirit that is being sung in "Let the Sunshine In" Claud did not die in vain, at least in this production, and we as flesh need not be failures.
This is a vastly differing stage interpretation from the original whose magic was in it's simplicity. After seeing it, this is how I would believe the grandchildren of the original 1968 Tribe would see the world of today. It shows us just how timeless the painful process of growing up in a corrupt and disapointing world is, especially when the ideals of universal peace, liberty, freedom, and equality are dashed by the powers that be. Thank you for posting.
omg i saw this on broadway in ny last night. it was so different from this but it wasTHE MOST AMAZING PLAY I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!!!! i cried soooo much lol.

Modest Vincent doesn't mention that he was a leading member of the original London Tribe... :) You're part of the remarkable HAIR legacy, Vincent- I bow before you!
Great, but I think that in the movie they gained something by keeping the rhythm very strict, to evoke the tramp of military boots. I don't mind rubato singing in general, but I preferred the rigid rhythm of the movie version.
I had the unforgettable experience of taking a group of Indiana University students to see the Vienna production in the context of an overseas study program in Austria. Standing with the audience, surrounded by my students, with everyone singing Let the Sunshine In brought tears to my eyes then, and seeing this video has brought back that beautiful evening. I felt that an essential sensibility was being transmitted across generations.
That's pretty cool, especially since Hair debuted off-broadway in 1967 and on Broadway in 1968, THEN made it to London. Great story, though. I'm just happy I'll be performing in Hair in '09!

Pehton was King Herod in the 2005 Amstetten production of JCS, starring Stephen Seale as Jesus and the AMAZING Drew Sarich as Judas (videos are all over YouTube). Rob Fowler (Berger in this clip) was Pilate in that JCS production.
Incidentally, Drew Sarich was Berger in the Vienna 2001 revival of HAIR, of which this production is a "spin-off."
POWERFUL!

The one put on in Central Park? I didn't see it, but from what I heard they were more concerned about fashion than anything else.
Perhaps I was misinformed, but it seems to me that "passion" was self promotion... these are after all actors, acting -!
