Hey I'm thinking about getting the Abu Garcia black max with berkley lightning rod I'll use it for crankbaits and topwater what line do you think will work the best.
No, its used for flipping & pitching jigs and all sorts of other purposes... Look at my recent video I was using it for fishing my soft plastic lures.
my issue with using flurocarbon line is it has a good memory, in other words its kinda like copper wire. once you bend it, the line stay bent. the knot strength isnt too good but if you do it right it is fine. i dont take time for perfect knots
so if you have a reel that recommends 10 lbs @ 150 yrds, you can put something like 20 or 30 pounds 200 yrds of braided cause its thinner?? and also i hear braided line is "hard" on reels...i that true ? thanks
Yes to the braid diameter and some cheaper braids are not coated and can be harmful to the guides. The reel not so much unless it's very cheap. I like power pro personally.
@cmcoreas usually theres flourocarbon and fluorocarbon leader, regular fluorocarbon is more limp so u can cast better, but the leader type is a bit stiffer, and more abrasion resistant, usually cuz it takes a beating more than the main line, with the teeth and scrapings from cover weeds etc,
You forgot the best pro of braided line, It can cast like 25% further than any other line. If im worried about fishing for a fish that can see the line then I just make a mono leader or whatever works for the scenario and attach it to my main line. Then I adjust the drag accordingly to the leader and everything is perfect. I always have equipped braided line on my spinning rods. To me the only con about braided line is that its not cheap.
Braided line tangles are a absolute nightmare, but I still love my braided, going back to mono is like driving a Porsche with boxing gloves. Of course you still need mono for many fishing tactics but I'm using braided in all other situations.
@smallyangler123 briad by far, im a pike fisherman but usually have one rod out for suckers etc out aswell for bait and i love braid i never used ti before but the pike and muskie have a really hard time snapping it unless they get you in rocks then you're screwed over, overall it depends, if your in a rocky outcrop go with 20-25 lb mono if not go with 60-80lb braid
you forgot to mention the price ranges: Mono is the best bang for your buck, braid & flouro are expensive. Final conclusion: it ain't the damn line...it's the fisherman. Just don't buy that cheap mono made by South Bend or Eagle Claw
that was a really helpful video for me. i have a question im going to my friends cottage this summer to fish for trout about 1 pound and less and im bringing my bait caster and spinning all light tackle can you tell me what type a line i should use? im a not a beginner.
Yes it's fine. You will just want to try to work the baits as best as possible. With your crank baits make long cast & hold your rod tip down to help get it deep & rod tip up to help run shallow. Just clipping the structure you are fishing is best!
It would be good If you buy some 20 pound braided line and use your mono for backing. Just make sure that the backing and the braid is the same diameter
power pro sucks 50lb power pro on the surf started at 10pm high tide 12am great at 6am before leaveing nice bite pole almost flew out holsrer realed and went 2 set and broke off in mid spool. spooled w/ new F ing power shit
For braid you can add a piece, perhaps a yards length, of mono or something else at the end of the braid to your lure or bait so it won't be as visible.
i run suffix braided line and i use my 9 foot ugly stick for every thing for musky and bass to shore fishing for salmon, carp and catfish to trolling rivers. informative fisherman, buddy i love your videos but i strongly disagree with your braided comments ive used it in clear stained and murky water conditions and caught just as much as my buddy that uses flurocarbin
I have 3 lines that I will stick by that will blow your mind. Power Pro braid, Suffix Seige or Elite, and Seagur Flourocarbon. I also like PLine Flouroclear and Flourocarbon. But if I had to choose just one line it would be Power Pro. It lasts long, rarely tangles, it is strong, smooth, easy handling, and in clear water a flourocarbon leader tied to the braid works like a charm. And the no stretch of Power Pro makes it very sensitive.... Screw Spiderwire and Fireline, POWER PRO IS THE WAY TO GO!
I am going to be setting up some line for my jug fishing and would like to know what would be the best kind brand and weight for this type of fishing or should say jugging for cats mostly. Will be in 15 to 40 ft of water
Fat boy Dan is a great jug fisherman,, search him on youtube & tell him I sent you.. I have only jug fished once & I used 15lb mono & circle hooks with squid...
Recently I just switched from mono to fluorocarbon, just wanted to find the best way to get line memory out of the new fluorocarbon. any ideas would be appreciated.
ok i agree with you a lil because i use stren microfuse and the fish cn not see tht at all and it a braidded line so every thing else i do a agree with but not with braided.
You can do it with 10lb mono it just depends on how you choose to play the fish.. 65braid will smoke rays and sharks but still use your drag on low geared reels! Plus it depends on the shark I use 100lb braid for 7-gills with 250lb leader
I've been using mono for whole my life(14 years). I thought about switching one of my reels to Fluorocarbon. What is the best fluorocarbon for beginers?
i caught a 16 inch sea robin on a bass spinner in fairhaven. what is a good bait or luer fo searobins? i noticed saw other sea robins eating mummichogs on the surface
i have been using lb line fos shark fishing down in fairhaven, ma. i have caught a 45lb female sand shark, but what i want to know, is i use berkley gorilla tough braid 80lb for sharks, and can i catch a shark over 100lb with the 80lb line? i use an uglystick custom with 7 foot heavy 30-50lb line, and a shakesphere tw30lb with 320 yds of 80lb line.
Yes you can catch them twice that big on 80lb braid of course you need to play them out right by using utilizing your drag and not horsing the shark in
i used spider wire braid, 20lb,on my shakespeare alpha bait cast reel, wich has a line captivity of 12/100 . when i first casted it, i got a birds nest. i think it was just the way that i casted. can you recomend a braid line that is good for me? i usually use spider wire, stren super braid, and power pro. i want a line that is thin, strong, atleast 20lb line, and has low visibility. i want a line that wont get all tangled up, and wont dig into the reel.
I fish for largemouth using 15 lb. power pro and mostly soft plastics. I catch a lot of fish without a leader but if I wanted to add a fluoro leader to decrease line visibilty and possibly increase strikes what knots and test should I use that would sacrifice casting distance? Thanks.
For Crappie Fluorocarbon is the better choice in my opinion and bluegill bite hard for the size so both types are fine. Bait fishing comes down to bait choice and presentation so the right size hook with invisible line is hard to beat. For crappie I use size 6 live bait hooks and bluegill size 8 J hooks.
My rod and reel manuals both suggest 8-17 pound test. If I use a braided line that is 50 pound test, I understand that diameter will not be the problem. Will the 50 pound test lead to me breaking my reel or rod if something that is nearing 50 pounds of pressure actually gets a hold on it? Factory doesn't suggest more than 17 and I did not know if it was a diameter consideration alone.
Rods are designed on break strength when measured by line test and reels are designed by diameter of line verses yards. So the answer to your question would be in theory yes 50lb braid can snap your rod in two before the line breaks,,, it truly comes down to mastering your drag to prevent breaking your rod at that point
I always wondered about just using really heavy line and just reeling a fish in with brute strength and not having to worry about drag. What are the negatives about doing this? Maybe something like using a bait caster with #17 line with a heavy rod for trout fishing. I've seen some of those bass fishers just reel-in hard and skip the fish across water.
Yes you can do that on heavier action rods & reels and the reason is they are using heavier lures that are cast able per say with 17 to 20lb test line. Bass also have very hard mouths so horsing them in is ok in some situations although you stand a much higher risk of pulling the hooks free from the fish especially treble hooks. Lighter line is meant for lighter tackle not necessarily for lighter fish and feeling the bite is key
pline sucks braided line is understandable for tournament situations, one thing to is that some braided lines like fireline wear out quick especially when shore fishing and rubbing against underwater structures youll find alot of tear mono is my top choice but choose wisely i keep in the 8lb area and have even netted kings and browns off of 6lb test and those are 15-25# fish never spooled, Andes is grreeeat. thx nfofishnman
Personally, I just cannot stand the stiffness of fluorocarbon. I tried many brands and types last year with promises of each being more flexible but I always went back to my braided lines or mono.
can i tie braid directly to a lure when flipping or should i use a fluro leader

MONO: clarity, bouyancy, and stretch. GOOD FOR: treble hooks, stiff rods, spinner baits and top water excluding scum frogs.
FLUORO: near invisibility and high sensitivity. GOOD FOR: finess (soft baits and jigs), deep divin cranks, and clear water.
BRAID: brute strength, abrasion resistant, small diameter, and weed cutting ability. GOOD FOR: scum frogs, big fish, salt water, and bait fishing
