  • Beautiful song. I had the privilege of getting to know the bass player, Bob Cross, before he died in 2001. He was a virtuosic bass player and composer and zero-bullshit human being. He wrote a 400 page book of chords for the five string bass that he never published. His compositions were positively reviewed by fellow bass players Steve Swallow and Will Lee. He told me that they would get booked in all-black venues and when they would go onstage they would get booed because everyone thought

  • I've heard and loved this song my whole life and this is the first time i've actually seen this band and like a lot of people am surprised they are white. Those guys in the band are an example of being open to the love of listening and playing music for what it is without care of colour.

  • PERVS AND PEDO'S, RISE TO YOUR NATIONAL ANTHEM

  • @Herc2770 - nah, that is "Hot Child in the City."

  • @Herc2770 You referring to this song as a "perv and pedos national anthem" is interesting. It speaks volumes of how watered down and politically correct the current male female dynamic has become. I prefer the days when men were men and women were women; without all of the BS that the feminists and politically correct malcontents have placed into the situation.

  • @trilogypart3

I DONT GIVE A FLYING FUCK WHAT YOU THINK, And now i feel better about myself.

  • @trilogypart3 True.

I remember when I realized that girls were far more interesting than toys when I was a little boy.

I could watch Jessica Alba brush her teeth and be happy.

  • Heck I thought the Beastie Boys were Black..

  • In my own opinion, I think that the song sounds like the late 50s, early 60s.

  • Its super. Who cares..black, white, purple..lol. Ya just cant get it out of your head..its a very catchy tune. Hey I love it. LOL...

  • i am a 65yr old black man and i always thought this was a black group!

  • I am 56, white. And thought the same thing.

  • @10ccman I am your age and had forgotten the name of the group, but remembered the title of the song and played it because I hadn't heard the song since 1967 or 1968. Like you - I was surprised the brothers are white. lol.

  • @10ccman - I am absolutely shocked --- I thought it was a black group! Surprise.!

  • @10ccman I am a 60 year old white guy who thought this was a black group also,,,,WOW go figure

  • @Makiba08 though it was black group....much soul

  • Look at that mutant ninja turtle dick bulgin' out. Thanks for allowing this to be on TV, Elvis.

  • You are not alone I just found out they were white! I had to back track to see that they was not some cover band. This song was very big on the R&B stations and not only that the horns gave it a Caribbean sound to it. I will bet most people did not know they are white..

  • OMG! These white boys got SOOOOOUUUULLLLL! I've always loved this song...never knew...

  • I am like everyone else..I thought these guys were Black..wow!!

  • I never KNEW THESE DUDES WERE NOT BLACK !!!!!! WOW!!!!! NEVER CAN TELL HUH? DONT JUDGE!!!!!!!! LOVE THIS ONE ALWAYS!!!

  • Black sounding...White dancing LOL

  • Holy shit, I thought 2 Black guys did this song!!!

  • This song should be called 'ode to the spank bank'

  • ahahah like everybody else I figured this guy was black. great voice/song and a crack band btw

  • Creepy? if you compare these with some of the groups around today these seem pretty normal, this is such a cool song, I grew up with this, who cares if their black or white, its great music

  • Everyone's focused on how they thought these guys were black, ignoring the bigger issue of how damn creepy they are.

  • Everyone's focused on how they thought these guys were black, ignoring the bigger issue of how fucking creepy they are.

  • What is!!!

  • my those pants are tight! bobby caldwell (what you won't do for love) is the 2nd "blackest" sounding man. full of soul more appropriate to say.

  • Steve Martin n'est-ce pas?

  • and i bet alot of people thought Joe Cocker was black !!!

  • whahahah the best nut huggers Ive ever seen!

  • I am 54 year old and I have never know that this group was not black! I made a bet with my wife and I totally lost. What happen to them? Love the song always did and still will!

  • @Fenderkickass: Wow & ok! As ignorant as you may believe my comment to be, I was simply stating that based on their sound I had no way of knowing what they looked like. Really don't see how blacks and college equates!

  • Wow I to have always liked this song, I was blown away when I saw these guys

    youtube is the shiznit

  • my freaking music teacher said the old timing music was crusty and pale and he would rather sing g@y songs how dare he insult the only good music

  • Wow! Remember this well..still holds up after all these years. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

  • Donnie Weavers sportin some serious wood. His sax player Jim Spidel was his born again bisexual love interest back in the 60's.

  • Not to mention the slightly warped analog video... makes everything sound glorious

  • Silly lyrics but what an awesome groove with those horns and guitar

  • i swore they were black

  • I'm a dude watcher, I'm a dude watcher, watchin' dudes go by, hug lug lug

  • WilliamP3- lol it is funny.thank goodness it's bout the music and not the moves.

  • LOL...Same here...How did that happen ?? This was one of my favorites and I was very into R & B. Coulda sworn this was a black group...either way the song is great.

  • I like this song. This video caught me by surprise because I always thought that this was a black group. Wow - this shows me that music is music...

  • onedin line!

  • All these comment remind me of Baby Don't You Know by Wild Cherry. "I really didn't know that the suckers was white, baby don't you know, baby don't you know that the honky's got soul."

  • looks like gilligan

  • Ahh the singer is black just look at his pants!

  • all of these years since the 60s I thought this was a black group....where are they today?

  • Great Song!! and yes I was surprised to find these brothers are white, The dance by the lead singer when he stop's singing at the end of the song is too funny.

  • Wow, I always thought this was a Black group. Still like the song no matter what.

  • Quick. Get a close up on his shifty eyes.

  • love the song and the way his pants fits.

  • Check out the bulge! Girl watcher indeed!

  • Dude looks like John Boy Walton, sounds like the coolest brother. Sort of like the late Johnny Maestro of Brooklyn Bridge.

  • All these years I thought Gene Chandler made this song. Oops, my bad!

These guys are AWESOME, one of my favorites from back in the day.

  • I'm not trying to offend anyone but ... this is the blackest sounding white man I've ever heard. When I first saw this a few years ago I wasn't just surprised, I was floored. I've read somewhere that this group's origens were as a gospel group. I've also read that the singer was a top-notch athlete. Don't know if those things are true. Maybe someone else does.

  • @125jlm Another surprise for me was "Tonight Tonight" by the Mellow Kings.

  • @125jlm Haha, your'e not the only one who thought he was a black man! Great song!

  • @125jlm I thought he was black also until I saw this video. Great song, reminds me of the 60's so much.

  • @125jlm LOL .... good song, thought it took me nearly 40 years to appreciate it!

  • @125jlm i bought the 45 when it came out /yeah that ages me/ but ur rite,on ur whole comment. as a matter of fact this song was only played on /wvon radio back then, here in chicago/ they only played black music!, this groups managment fooled even the big radio people back then. when people found out they were white, so went their future/over/ the average white band sound black, but i think they let u know in the name of the band .lol .tommy

  • @125jlm you monst likely thought he was a black man because, they are total perv savages and this song fits right in.

  • @125jlm i agree with you 100%.

  • @125jlm Oh, stop it with the "not trying to offend anyone." I think most will agree with you, except those uptight, "quick to flip the race card" type of people. This video surprised me too. I always thought the singer was black until I saw this video. I'm sure many blacks were surprised as well.

  • @125jlm I thought they were black too.

  • @125jlm If You Think He sound Black,Check the lead singer forThe Flaming Embers on "West Bound #9".

  • @125jlm

Yeah, a lot of musicians were good atheletes. Al Jardine of the Beach Boys is one that comes to mind. Football player I think.

  • @125jlm Until tonight, at the age of 53, I have always thought this was a black group. Never saw their picture, and I've known this song since I was a very small lad at 4 or 5.

  • @125jlm Your kidding right? Michael MacDonald??? hehehe... it's always fun to be surprised, when it comes to things like this.

  • Surprise, surprise, surprise...I grew up with this song but did not know that they weren't black....I love it. Music should always be just that. Not black or white. Just great to listen to.

  • Keep cool, muchachos.

The Lead Singer has a 5 inch dick.

  • @billybandol , and you know this because you sucked it when he was on acid. Juaz, juaz, juaz.

  • @sumrextejodera22

    This is another story...

But I was the one who sold him this rabbit`s foot!

  • and now for the reverse effect, listen to charley pride's rendition of "lovesick blues" on "the lawrence welk show."

  • I agree with scoronamunoz, I've always thought this group was pure black soul. The lead is no looker, but he fills outs a pair a jeans.

  • Thats the ugliest guy in rock history, and what the fuck is in his pants!?

  • I'm writing this for my friend sitting here with m, a black guy born in 1961, this is one of his favorite songs, up until the youtube era he woulda bet everything he owned that these guys were black (and he's dictating this to me now). Too funny. But it's still a great song that brings back a lot of great memories. He says he joins the crowd that's been fooled for 40 years.

  • WOW ! WHAT A GREAT TRAK ,BUT WHAT A FUNKY BUNCH !!!

  • I initially thought the lead singer was Steve Martin, haha. Also, those tight pants are giving him some serious moose knuckle.

  • @Janeen913 Muscle knuckle - That cracked me up! :-)
