You use the wines conficuration tool, and chance it conficuration. Then just launch the game where you do always launch it.

There is a reason why do people want a high fps: it simply runs faster. Many games do not check for time and so it runs the distance, depending on the speed, each frame. That means the more fps the faster you run/move and so on.

But most people don't notice that and say that the game is 'lagging' when the fps is lower than 60 or so. That's not true (as you said) because human recognizes only 24 moments a second. And it counts it as a movement.

alt+f2, and write "metacity --replace" - works a lot better than with compiz

Go to options, set screen resolution to something less than the maximum of your monitor and select windowed mode instead of full screen. Then just restart the game to take full effect.

I have Ubuntu 8.10 with Wine-Doors, and I installed Steam. When I go try to join a server, within two-three seconds the game freezes, and crashes. Do you know any fixes of this? Specs: 3200+, 2GB, x1550.

Yeah, but it wont run that well on high res (1600 x 1050). 9800GX2 are only glorified 8800GTX and have small in increase in performance. The only difference is that it has more throughput and dual GPU's. The HD48xx series will outshine this GPU if your do it right. But nVidia has better support in linux than ATI does, though ATI has gotten better over the years.. Wish the video ripping was fixed :/ Because I have a T43 with an x300 e_e. But I will have the other once after x-mas :D

You could try disabling compositing (which will also disable compiz). Compositing has been known to lower framerate by about half.
