add all the thousands and all the other numbers

1000+1000+1000+1000=4000

10+20+30+40=100

now add the sum of it

4000+100=4100

I got it right on the first try. It's basically (1000x4) + 40 + 30 + 20 + 10 = 4000 + 100 = 4100. I imagine when people get it wrong, they somehow get their decimal out of place and think it's 4000 + 1000. Yay! 5 years of engineering school and this is what I learned.

How it works is as you add the numbers, your mind begins to process that it should add another thousand, and as you add 10 to get 90 to 100, you begin to fool yourself into thinking that you are at 5000.
