Well, I do know that the way he was presented in the 1988 "People" interview on BBC TV upset him terribly and that, together with the derogatory remarks he made about his mother, whether true or imagined in his depressive state, or perhaps just his way of getting back at her over the 1973 disaster at EMI, perhaps led to ructions in his family when his remarks were broadcast on national TV. It all led to him going downhill rapidly, until his suicide in 1991. It was a tragedy.
hi david my mum remebers darren burn she said they wanted him to over take donny osmond for some daft reason but there daft plan never tund into anything just pipe dreams
Yes EMI spent a fortune trying to do it and all for nothing. The British charts in 1973 were dominated by U.S, boy singers and all the British record companies were trying to find a "weenybopper" boy singing star to rival them . I and many others thought that Darren was going to be the next British superstar. But it just didn't happen. Darren was a sensitive, intelligent boy and he just couldn't handle the disappointment and the feeling of failure after the big build up. He never got over it.
hi david yes its a shame he never made it because my mum said at the time she was in japan and darren made a record in japanese called my teenage love in 1974 she kept but at the time she was crazy about donny
Thanks, cherylblonde, that's a very interesting bit of information. I didn't know he had sung Teenage Lover in Japanese for their market. I will have to try and track that one down. I do have his British EMI single of that song. British boy stars were very popular in Japan for some reason. Mark Lester released singles there in Japanese, too. I just wonder if Ricky Wilde and The James Boys also made Japanese versions of their records.
I like it too. It was the only record Ricky Wilde made as a child singer that had a strong melody and you could hear the lyrics to. Sorry, Ricky, but in the race to be the weenybopper superstar of 1973, your EMI rival Darren Burn ran rings around you and even you admitted that he had a fantastic voice, plus his records were far better than yours. I know neither of you got anywhere chartwise at the time, despite all the hype, but Darren's records were real class compared to yours.
Who was Darren Burn? I've never heard of him. The only other obscure pre-teen act from the 70's I know were Flame ("Big Wheel Turning"), and Lena Zavaroni ("Personality")
Just type "Darren Burn" into Google and you'll find there's plenty of info about him on the Internet and photos and an upload of his debut single on the Boy Soloist website. Maybe you're too young to remember 1973, as many people are. Or maybe you're weren't in the UK when EMI were spending a fortune promoting him. Darren came to a very tragic end by his own hand in 1991 at the early age of 30.
Does anyone know the guitar chords ?

I rememeber this song very well ...but I must admit that I have never heard of young Darren Burn ..we practicly share the same birthday year as well
Daracdor 2 years ago
Which birthday...Darren Burn, Monday, August 28th, 1961, or Ricky Wilde, Monday, November 6th, 1961?
DavidRayner1947 2 years ago
Darren`s .. I was Born in early August.
Maybe the past glories of His child stardom were re-opened after the interview and He could not cope with re-vist to his past ?
