  • Holmes the master. Jeremy Brett IS worth a kings ransom, bless him. R.I.P. Ameen.

  • Holmes got £12,000. Look at the check.

  • @harveyallison it was about 88kg of pure gold (96kg of 22 carat coins)

  • Everyone who worked on this production should feel very proud.

Hollyweird is not ever going to do better than this.

What a sadness is boarding school though. What difference is it really to a childrens home? I would never do that to one of mine.

The ruling elite, children from broken homes, continue to fail us all completely.

  • what a brilliant and compelling production.

I doubt it can be topped.

  • 1:25 -- Holmes did very well -- instead of the £ 6,000 that was offered initially, he got £12,000.

  • I agree that it's not as good as the book, these guys who attempt to improve on Conan Doyle usually fail; I really can't see that the original story needed it (and it would also have been a heck of a lot cheaper to produce, with no need to mess around in caverns with scores of extras!). Where it really loses is that CD saves the bit about the fake shoes for the final scene, which I think much more effective. But thanks for posting all the same!

  • LOVE this movie! It seems kind of gentle and sweet compared to some of the other episodes, maybe because of the choir music and the young students. Each of the characters are so good -- the lord and the teachers, etc. -- great acters. Probably my favorite of the Sherlock stories I've seen in film form.

  • For me the best episode together with the Musgrave Ritual. Everything's perfect : the picture, the actors, the ambiance. I could watch it over and over !

  • Oh, I wish I was a 19th Century British gentleman. However, I was born a 21st Century American Girl. Bugger.

  • @Lyrictheac Better than an English Gentleman, you bear the Image of God. You have been called to Knighthood in the Service of the King of kings. You are called to be an Ambassador here in the United States for the Sovereign of sovereigns. You have been selected since before the worlds began to be ordained to a Royal Priesthood. And I, m'lady, have been sent by His Majesty to inquire as to why you have not responded to His call: why art thou delayed?

  • @2me4my5 Ah but my dear sir (or ma'am, it's difficult to say), I am aware that I bear the image of God, and I certainly do my best to suitably display said image for the world to see. However, you may err when you state that I am called to be a knight, Ambassador, and a Priest. I am not called to glorious deeds or battles afar. My role on the stage of life is humble, but I have yet to be cast in the play.

  • For some reason I love the ending sequence when it shows the son going back, that just seemed like a perfect way to end the entire episode.

  • well i can only hope he spent all that money on booze, drugs, hookers and some harecore pornogaphy

  • What a great look of Jeremy Brett when he gets the money ! Gorgeous ! And what a nice an warm look from the Duke who didn't want any interference in this case !

  • i see no reason that holmes would not split that between the two of them.

  • Wow, this version of the Duke is a lot more sympathetic than the original story's Duke. I kind of like the change Granada decided to make with him.

  • They really went off the original story on this one. It's still fun to watch though.

  • I wonder how much Watson earned for publishing his Holmes stories, he was a bestselling author for his times!

  • Yay! He finally got paid.

Blackmailing the nobility... Holmes is my hero.

  • Every time I watch "The Priory School" (and I have seen it more times than any other Holmes episode), I am astonished at how PERFECT it is. This could very well be the finest of all the episodes in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Superb in every respect, and from start to finish.

  • I always imagined that Holmes shared the profits of their adventures; at the very least, Watson's retirement was considerably more comfortable than it would have been otherwise.

  • I watched it on pirated DVD

  • The only thing missing was Holmes patting the check and saying, "I am a poor man." :)

  • as always Dear Anish, i thank U

  • Too bad the complete set of DVD's is like $250 dollars!!!! quite expensive, although it has 39 of the short stories and a couple of movies I think....Its worth it anyways...

  • I guess I should be getting into this stealing cattle business of his : P

  • this is the episode that scared me when I was little and my parents would watch this show something about the bike and the birds and the dead teacher really creeped me out. funny to watch it now. thanks for posting

  • I think I am going to get the whole set on dvd,.

The production quality and attention to minute details, even the sherry glass is truely amazing, let alone the acting which 1st class.

Shame the dont make shows like this anymore. Glad they're on dvd.

Some how i dont think the 'movie' will be a touch on this, and will do doubt fade quickly into oblivion.

Unlike this which was made 20 years ago, and really has stood the test of time , and won.

  • The headmaster was Sir William Lucas in Pride and Prejudice. I knew I had seen that face!

  • I could use a kings ransom right about now.

  • do u have The Four Oak? I would like to know if they r selling these in DVDs?

  • lol every single short storie made into shows :D weee -watches them for 6hours-

  • Great show. Never seen it before, but real fun to watch. Now to pull out my Sherlock Holmes complete edition and read till the wee hours of the... oh, wait... my thesis... (grmbl... mmbl...)

  • Oh, yes - exactly my problem, too.

  • I really like these shows. So well done, and the interesting sets and old houses, British culture that adds to the entertainment. Like in this show - I've never seen what a Brit boys school is like! Interesting.

  • @Herstory4321 this is more of a private boarding school.

  • Anish, thank you very much for taking the time and putting all of these Sherlock Holmes videos on your site, I have watched all of them, and enjoyed them greatly, Thanks again :)

  • Thank you Anish79 for making these available for us to see.

  • Wow--the duke gave him 12,000 pounds!! Considering 100 pounds a year was a liveable wage back then, that would probably be like getting a 12 million pound check today!! Yikes, that's one grateful duke!!

  • Enjoyed this very much!

  • He is definitely adorable when he's speechless :D I do like this episode so much :) Brett is just simply amazing :)

I think I'm in love with Brett's portrayal of Holmes :)

  • Positively adored this, great story, great actors. Jeremy Brett is by far the best Holmes I have ever seen. I'm almost pained to think of Robert Downey Jr. doing the role.

And Holmes? Speechless? Holy crap. Made me giggle.

  • I am pained to see Downey Jr. as Holmes too... What a mockery of classic literature.

  • Made ME shiver!

    Yah1

    Thummz UP, 'flameandshadow'(2 wks ago)!

  • Isn't he adorable when he's speechless, though?

I mean, the movie looks awesome, all action-y and all the things that I love, it's just that it isn't the Sherlock Holmes that I know and love. It's a complete debauchery of the canon.

  • Hi there again, 'flameandshadow!'

THX so much ferra email ['blast'] -- it is GREAT to read yer most colorful AND informative comments! I'm honoured!

U'r so NICE, 2! Bin watchin' lotsa SH episodes: "Wisteria Lane;" "Devil's Foot;" "Priory School;" to name a few. ALL FanTasTik!

I'll be lookin' mere careful ferr'ya inna 'comments' scn.! (I TROLL when waitin' on'meh ''bufferin!') [hehe]

Havva GREAT DAY, "flameandshadow!" You definitely deserve it! YAY!

    Luv'th'Net! //^_^\\

  • Ummm...thanks? Back at you too. o.O

  • superlative portrayal by brett

  • He's acyually quite sexy when he's rendered speechless!!

  • You see illegitimate children just wouldn't do back then, no use whatsoever.

Hey-ho, at least Holmes got a fat cheque and his grace didn't get any bad press that's the main thing.

  • Always superlatives on these productions....I shudder to think what the new movie will avail. Ka-boom computer effects and"that blowed up reeel good!"

    A sherry,please,Mrs. Hudson.

  • @mxylpx moron.

  • @mxylpx the Guy Ritchie movie was based on a comic book, not on the Conan Doyle works. The movie is utter trash.

  • @woodbinedrinker Yep, you're right. O wait sarcasm. You're a dumbass. Please get aids, give them to you're children and die horribly. Don't ask why because there is no reason explaining things to beings with the intelligence of crayfish.

  • @AmonKhan96F enjoy your Gay Ritchie live action comic book

  • @woodbinedrinker First of all the Granada version is the best. Second.....just shut up and die. Sincerely, your a cunt.

  • @woodbinedrinker Another thing the film is not based of a comic. The comic was made instead of a regular script. It's better than anything you're feeble mind could come up with.

  • @AmonKhan96F isn't "Graphic Novel" just a phrase virgin men came up with to assuage the shame of an adult who buys his literature at a store that has card board cut outs of pro wrestlers and Wonder Woman?

  • @AmonKhan96F "It took Wigram, an executive producer on the two most recent Harry Potter films, six months to work out the story and concept, along with the comicbook artist John Watkiss. Together they came up with a graphic novel which Wigram then took to Warner Brothers."

    telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/6789921/Sherlock-Holmes-pipe-dreams

    A fucking comic book

  • Beautiful story...beautiful story...unbelieaably beautifully crafted!

  • your right! i've never seen holmes speechless either! so cool! he is rather powerful isn't he?

  • i thought it was 6 grand but he was actually was given £12,000. A stupendous amount of money in the late 19th/early 20th Century.

No wonder Holmes could pick and choose his cases!

  • It WAS originally 5000 pounds. Then upped to 6000. Now 12,000. That really WAS A STUPENDOUS amount of money back then.

Holmes was the best of the best detectives. He really could pick and choose his cases and he could do them on his own terms for his own rewards as he pleased. Nobody said 'no' because they knew they'd never get such good results with anyone else.

  • Considering that a teacher earned at the very most £100 a year in Holmes' time £6,000 was a considerable sum of money (I'm guesstimating about £125,000?)...........especially for just two or three days work!!!..........I wonder if he squared Watson up a few quid to supplement his wound pension?

Holmes of course was worth every penny.

  • I believe the number on the cheque is 12.000. Thus the "king's ransom".

  • @19996669991 if you pause and look closely at the bottom of the check, the total sum is £12,000. That is £5,910,000 in today's money.

  • @cameron120587 Or about $11,282,190 to us yanks.

  • @19996669991 >>>Yes indeed ...he is worth every bloody cent!!! ;-)

  • @19996669991 so was watson ! ! ! ! ! ! (worth every pennny!) I mean,

"Lunch!" is priceless! If not for Watson's appetite they would not have gone to the Inn at that time ! lol

  • @19996669991

    About 500,000 pounds today.

  • @19996669991 How much would that be in American dollars?

  • @19996669991 @1:26 the cheque was 12,000 pounds.

  • My son, the bad penny. Such an able statesman, but I suppose he was away from home a lot. Too late now.

  • hehe thats a rare occasion- Holmes speechless! ^_^

  • Holy cow... John Madden directed that???

  • Hee hee...I had to laugh at that too. Not John Madden the American former coach - different John Madden :D
