  • Thanks so much for sharing your process, Joe-- I enjoyed these vids muy mucho-

    Bob Lizarraga

  • Beside your incredible talent to paint and draw, I think I could listen to you talking all day long :)

Thx for these videos, they are incredible

  • teach meeeeeee :) wonderful work Joe!!

  • is this prince charles? this is called defacing, not carricature.

  • you have inspired me to draw again. thank you :)

  • thats got to be the best tom cruise caricature ive ever seen. no joke. And thank you for sharing all of your thoughts and tips and your stories. No teacher ive ever had or artist ive ever seen has opened up as much as you have. watching these 8 vids has really made my day.

  • Thanks for sharing all of these videos. I was a lot of fun to watch how you work! You have been blessed with the ability to paint and also to share your work through narration as well! Very cool! Peace-NickZ. :)

  • Great to watch you work. And though rainbowsod doesn't seem to approve of your sharing of life experience, I really appreciate hearing where my own art could take me. I'd love to do work for MTV. I think rainbowsod may be just a touch jealous and insecure about his abilities. Or perhaps he just has a small penis.

  • Thanks very much for the tute. WE all need to learn from one another!!

  • All the work and thoughts you put in to your art it just blows me away. I really enjoyed listening to your stories. Having the chance to hear an artist open op and talk freely was cool, i do digital art, photographing and play music myself so it wasn't hard to relate to.

  • Why so much criticism? It's a good artwork...

    Post more, please.

  • Joe your work is amazing man well done and thanks for sharing. Ignore the negative comments youtube is full of begrudgery no matter what the video is sport, art anything. This is the reason I dont bother posting etc but I signed up today for first time after seeing your work and the amount of info you share your setting a great example. Sebastian Kruger has to be my favourite artist to man. Keep it up!!!

  • 10 stars :)

  • Great videos! :)

  • God damn, I hate those people who talk like "I'm better than you, asshxle!" ... Hey, rainbow, if you have so AMAZING sharp eyes that you can point out joe's mistakes, why don't you post one that shows how good your skills are?

  • Don't worry man. Rainbowsod is a stupid dick. Any reasonable person would assume that any person producing digital artwork would already understand flow, opacity, and pressure sensitivity. He's clearly looking for the beginner version of these videos.

  • My apologies Joe, I sounded harsh. I just wanted to express that 'flow' and 'opacity' and 'pressure sensitivity' on the tablet are the 3 most important brush settings that need to be tweaked in order to paint with natural-feeling brushes. Yet I have never seen a single tutorial that reveals these digital painting options. It seems the artists show the work being done but provide little information on the software-end of it.

  • This is not a "lesson". I love how you have the balls to say rude and judging things here, when you are missing the intention (stated in the video) of these. I'm not teaching. I am sharing, talking, showing, motivating myself to keep painting. I'm sorry that you watched my videos and were not happy. You don't have to watch any more.

  • The result will be an incredibly precison-controlled brush setting with the ability to blend colors flawlessly and smooth. If you need hard edges, just 'up' the opacity on the brush setting and shrink the size-- always leave the 'flow' at 2% or 3%. You can then add creases and small, dark or light details.

For some reason, Joe and the rest of them don't want to tell anyone these settings.

Maybe because the more people know them, the more competition there will be?

  • I mention flow and opacity in another video. Don't be so assuming.

  • And the watercolor texture layer will reduce the precison that your brushes want to produce- therefore allowing you to blend your colors more smoothly. Any tight details you need to add can go on the very top layer of your image. As for your brush settings... you need to have 'flow' down to about 2-3%, and your opacity around 10%. Your brush should be a hard brush, but with somewhat softer edges- so in other words, in between an airbrush and a hard brush.

  • He is saying that digital painting isn't art! Don't you get it!?

Anyway... great work. You got some really neat brushwork. I wish I get to be as good as you someday. :p

Can you post some sped up videos of your work in the future to go along with the tutorials?

  • I often make artwork "with a single pencil".. I frequently paint in oils and acrylic. I do portraits and still lifes, observe animals, nature, buildings and people. THIS pieces is exactly what you described, and is not trying to be anything more than that. Why would you have a problem with it 'claiming' to be the highest form of art, when I claim no such thing? IT IS animation and illustration and cartooning. I am not saying it is the finest of art... so what is your beef?

  • CAINOBEL, it is also a quick demonstration of digital Photoshop tools. That was its purpose. If you feel the need to be the fine-art police, then you are in the wrong place.

  • @CAINOBEL

    You're a pretentious dick. STFU

  • I have no shame in saying that I don't know what you are getting at, and if I DO understand you, you are completely wrong. To each his/her own.

  • What in the hell are you talking about CAINOBEL??

Anyway awesome work totally dig the pic.

  • THANKS JOE!!!

  • what a great caricature!!!!! excellent work!!!

    best regards mario magnatti mariom

ps: see my works on google

    bye

  • thats definetely tom cruise´s best caricature

  • thanks i saw the whole processand i learned a lot

  • Great work man.

  • amazin

  • I just finished watching the final segment of the Tom Cruise caricature. I have always been drawn to caricatures since my older brothers had theirs drawn at the three rivers arts festival. I have been drawing caricatures on paper for years and I have really been wanting to do some digital caricature paintings. This offers a lot of insight into how to get started! Thanks for taking the time to make these. And great work and amazing style. I love the extreme exaduration!

  • this is THE greatest painting walkthrough i have ever seen... and i've seen A LOT

  • Perfecto!

  • When you are with your girlfriend or just other people, do they ever get to say anything? It amazing that I have watched all of these and you never ran out of things to talk about. Nice work. I will buy the book.

  • haha! If you know me, you know that I talk a lot at times. This is not why I'm talking here, though: I thought about my approach before doing these, and made certain decisions about how much I would talk and what I'd talk about. ;)

  • Sellout

  • No, he's not a genius. He's a drawer.

    Who's with me?

  • hes both, he is a genius in drawing, he is amazing

  • HE'S A GENIUS!!!!!
