I will agree Japanese voice acting "Sounds cool" but since I can actually understand the English voice actors and don't have to read subtitles taking away from whats actually happening on the movie/game the English dub will always be better IMO....just saying
I absolutely used to love this game and I still have it to this day. This boss battle is one of my alltime favorites. I remember how it had me on the verge of throwing my controller across the room. It truly reminded me as if I were Goku from Dragonball Z fighting Freiza. I tell you when I finally beat his ass I felt like I was Goku as if I went to awhole new level of gaming and just like in DBZ Huriko couldnt touch me anymore.
There are two keys to beating this boss: 1) listen for when he goes "Hyah!" - he will start teleporting to where you are and doing a whirling attack that hurts like hell. As soon as you hear him yell, start dashing away repeatedly. 2) whenever you're not dodging his attacks, keep killing the talismans and getting the health they leave behind. Wait until you have a charged sword and a clear shot to attack him - don't take stupid risks.
@megatroll I don't mean to sound racist or japanophile or anything, trust me, but the fact of the matter, I think is that American voice actors (& even in movies, animations, etc) can really become so rigid, boring, and lack of variety & depthness, when compared to the Japanese ones. example: Shinji Ikari from Evangelion. now give me just ONE example from western that can even 'beat' this crazy badass character in terms of his depthness!!...

This boss is easier when you have the English dub on-- because then you know what attack he's sending you-- when you have the original Japanese on I don't know what attack he's going to send... until about an hour in and then you start learning Japanese :/
Keeping Hiruko under control in this fight is a MUST. If you leave him alone long enough, he does a teleport-slash style move - very deadly and VERY HARD to get away from.
When I fought this guy, I was so scared of just falling off, I played more defensively - it was a battle to keep Hiruko's ass in check, keep Akujiki fed, AND kill the talismans short enough between each other to kill the bastard. I did it though - it was a godly epic fight.
i gave up on this bastard hiruko he was to hard to beat the hardest thing about beating this prick was that he would follow hotsuma around and beat the crap out of him.
i like how they made this stage like he doesnt do much and you hate to hit him until he had enough and then the real fight start, not many games that does that

Thanks. Yeah, that's how it is with this boss. My advice is to keep moving and dash out of the way after you kill a talismen, remember his spell attacks, and grab the energy the talismen leave behind. Catching him with a powered up(good amount)sword is rare...I just whittle him down with what I have when he's open.

Akujiki consumes the evil within men's souls, and as men are basically evil, it literally feeds on souls. If Hotsuma stops killing, Akujiki will consume HIS soul.
what's so hard about him? he looks pretty straightforward. no too clusterfucky, his moves don't seem particularly cheap or difficult to dodge. are the controls hard to work with or is the camera a bastard?
The hard part is the fact that you have to build up your sword's power by striking those little talisman guys while you're avoiding the Boss's attacks and even when your sword is at it's full power, you can only keep it charged for a few seconds. If he's in the middle of an attack or out of reach then you have to start all over. I think this vid is on Normal mode. On Hard Mode it takes a lot more to destroy one talisman.
oh, alright then, i retract my statement. that's some pretty sadistic camerawork. i got the combat in NG down in about 2 or 3 hours (spam flying swallow like hell) but the camera still got me killed a lot, especially during the last platforming sequence before Murai. i will say this tho, this game's voice acting's a bit...it sounds like a fandub or something. especially the main character. at least his scarf makes up for it.
That is a really impressive Playthrough.. Never though the PS2 Shinobi was possible to complete.. I got to that Blind guy in the River after about a hour or so of trying to beat him I threw the pad on the floor and stamped on it.. Prpbally unlocking Joe Mushashi and Morasume by collecting all medals on Hard mode would be even harder
I just tried playing this all over again to see if I can pull it off and that I didn't defeat Hiruko out of pure luck or near insanity. It's been like 5 years since I last played this and the trusty old PS2 still works.
Guess what? Now I remember why I had to buy a brand new controller 5 years ago.
The dude who killed Hiruko in this vid deserves a medal. The talismans are tough AND they seem to resist any attempt at a good chain tate to wipe that damn cheap Hiruko off the face of the earth.
This Hiruko creep is one of the hardest bosses in any game I ever played. It looks kinda easy just watching him go down, but try actually playing the whole of Shinobi without falling apart. Didn't use gameshark or anything,and beat him out of sheer spite and rage at the game devs at SEGA.
I think another hard boss was the Butterfly lady and the one man on the ground floor that walks slow but when you get close to him he darts at you. He's on that electric blueish color laboratory stage. Eerie. LOL

what's so hard about him? he looks pretty straightforward. no too clusterfucky, his moves don't seem particularly cheap or difficult to dodge. are the controls hard to work with or is the camera a bastard?

The hard part is the fact that you have to build up your sword's power by striking those little talisman guys while you're avoiding the Boss's attacks and even when your sword is at it's full power, you can only keep it charged for a few seconds. If he's in the middle of an attack or out of reach then you have to start all over. I think this vid is on Normal mode. On Hard Mode it takes a lot more to destroy one talisman.

oh, alright then, i retract my statement. that's some pretty sadistic camerawork. i got the combat in NG down in about 2 or 3 hours (spam flying swallow like hell) but the camera still got me killed a lot, especially during the last platforming sequence before Murai. i will say this tho, this game's voice acting's a bit...it sounds like a fandub or something. especially the main character. at least his scarf makes up for it.

That is a really impressive Playthrough.. Never though the PS2 Shinobi was possible to complete.. I got to that Blind guy in the River after about a hour or so of trying to beat him I threw the pad on the floor and stamped on it.. Prpbally unlocking Joe Mushashi and Morasume by collecting all medals on Hard mode would be even harder

took me a long time to get to the final boss...and more time trying to beat him. i eventually gave up...although i did come close couple times.

I just tried playing this all over again to see if I can pull it off and that I didn't defeat Hiruko out of pure luck or near insanity. It's been like 5 years since I last played this and the trusty old PS2 still works.
Guess what? Now I remember why I had to buy a brand new controller 5 years ago.
The dude who killed Hiruko in this vid deserves a medal. The talismans are tough AND they seem to resist any attempt at a good chain tate to wipe that damn cheap Hiruko off the face of the earth.

This Hiruko creep is one of the hardest bosses in any game I ever played. It looks kinda easy just watching him go down, but try actually playing the whole of Shinobi without falling apart. Didn't use gameshark or anything,and beat him out of sheer spite and rage at the game devs at SEGA.

I think another hard boss was the Butterfly lady and the one man on the ground floor that walks slow but when you get close to him he darts at you. He's on that electric blueish color laboratory stage. Eerie. LOL

I was stuck on this boss about 4 years ago. My dad heard me crying about not being able to beat it so he comes and plays the game for the FIRST time and beats it... I know sounds like bull shit but it's not and I got mad... lol
