I fuckin' hate those quasi-strikes and attacks they perform in a most Aikido schools. They do not represent normal and obvious movements of attacking person, no matter trained or not. Lame and gay.
Good demo video for instructional purposes. Seems like some of the viewers would like to see more of a free-sparring video, which would be cool too, but not the purpose of this video, which is about learning the techniques.
Having trained in Tomiki aikido myself, I know the techniques are effective and versatile in a full-attack mode but are hard to keep smooth and slow enough for instruction in that case.
This is Randori and when you have learnt Randori it gives you basics to work with. You have to know all 17 on left and right side when your only 4 belts in. Plus a lot of other things. As for effectiveness Sumi Otoshi alone is potentialy fatal as someone who doesnt know Aikido would land on their head.
what a bs conversation....it's about concepts here....done with 'bad intentions' this is about intercepting incoming aggression and you could eventually (and easily!) break arms and backs with these techniques....
slow or sloppy techniques don't mean the techniques itself don't work...and funny you mention tea 'know' do since it really proved ineffective in most competitions except it's own....lol
@itachi123100 huh, looks cool, but there are very questionable, ineffective throwing techniques and this bs again with giving a hand to your opponent . Yes it's kata, I understand, this is needed for demo, but why so... feigned, unnatural?
Still it looks really nice, much better, then original Aikido. Thanks.
@itachi123100 good concept of leverage, BAAAD techniques, even among completely morons there is none, who so easily give you a hand for armlock. Even for demo it looks too much like dances, not like a fight demo.
I've searched around and i find some vids from TomAiki competitions, well, it looks like very bad judo for me. Sorry.
This is why aikido is given a bad name. I learn and teach REAL aikido that actually works in a real life situation. We train with live tanto and live katana. The uke's in my class are told to attack as stong and as violent as possible. So when it comes to being attacked for real they have been conditioned to that attack. This is just soft you might aswell go ball room dancing. TOMIKI is pointless I mean who attacks like that and would these techniques work on the street??? I THINK NOT.
Don't write off Tomiki Aikido. I think this is just a demonstration of the 17 basic techniques in Tomiki Aikido. As such they're never going to look the way you want them to. In all martial arts there exists a place for kata and that's all that's going on here. It's not the style - it's the dojo. I've been to plenty Aikiki style dojos where the attacks were pitiful.
this isnt a real fight it is a demonstration of how the basic moves are excuted if anyone nu anything about martial arts let alone aikido would be a fuckin miracle but 2 many ppl no nothing about the true art or fighting thus the reason we watch mma how many ppl do mma real martial arts such as jeet kune do believed never attack an opponent while they are down( its disrespectful and shows a lack of style) nles it is the finishing blow
Instead of looking at the master doing the locks, look at the woman. The Aikido master looks great, but the woman is just putting her hand in front of him. What would happen if that master was in front of a boxer, karateka, judoka or jiujitsu master?
The answer is, nothing. Maybe, the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, created an effective martial art, but surely it was way too different from what we're watching in this vid.
From my yondan's perspective, that's a pretty nice demo of the junana-han kata, or randori-no-kata. Her principles seem sound enough, and the pace is nice, not so fast to cover mistakes. Not that my opinion matters, but I approve... One thing, technique no. 14, which she called tenkai kote-gaeshi, is shiho-nage the way I've always learned/performed it. *shrug* There's bound to be differences in such a growing, alive art. But, as I said, her principles seem quite sound! Good uke, too!
i think shiho-nage translates as something like 4 directional throw or something like that. Tenkai kote-gaeshi translates as reverse wrist turn which is what it is. To my mind i could do any number of techniques in 4 directions so why pick tenkai kote-gaeshi to call shiho-nage ? Just my two sents worth. Can call it anything you like if the principles are sound its a good technique.
Shi-ho-nage is the four directional throw. It's named so, by kenji tomiki, as it demonstrates best that a throw can be done in multiple direction. However the traditional name is tenkai-kote-gaeshi has it is a kote-gaeshi with a hip-turn. If aiming for the throw it's shi-ho-nage if aiming for the break it's tenkai-kote-gaeshi.
But what's in a name. All techniques should become one in the end.
hmmz i was taught slightly different moves to these,, waki gatame for example is a complicated move that ends in u having ur opponant in a behind his back arm bar- quite different from the move shown here- juss shows what variations that are being taught-neither right or wrong. i enjoyed this demonstration,,but honey,,do some asskickin next time hehe
Do you practice Aikido? From what I've seen of this video, while it does in some ways resemble Aikido there are several differences. Personally I find this form of the art a bit choppy. It doesn't feel as fluid, graceful or effective. This is just my opinion of course...
It wasn't bad, trying to make kata more dynamic without changing the technique is always difficult. As for the dude who hates english people trying to name techniques, shut up you twonk, what do you refer to them as "Number 1?" Number 2?" It looked ok, nothing to write home about though.
Very nicely produced. This is now my favorite visual reference for these techniques.
Sufficiently so that I wish they could take it to the next level - Gyakugama Ate, for example, needed to be a bit slower; the camera didn't capture the action.
Mae Otoshi is fantastic - excellent portrayal of the unbalance.
Looks a little painful, I know that looks like good etiquite, but 17 break falls I need 17 of those soon. Good work.

I think something in the kamae, zanshin and ma-ai of these two is putting viewers off.
nothing wrong with the techniques themselves. Just seems to be lacking feeling.
