Usually with a router you'll receive a set up CD, connect your computer to the router via an ethernet cable (connect it to one of the LAN ports, not the internet slot), put the cd in, run the set up again.

@chickenflay Okay, this is what you do.

The benifit of owning the router, (assuming that you own the router your trying to connect to.) is that you can reset it.

on the back of your router, look for a little hole, (typically it will say reset near it.)

Take a paperclip and hold the reset button for 20 seconds. then power off the device, and then power it back on.

now try connecting to it with default username and pass.

@squishy11ish usually it will be "admin" in either the password or the username, usually one or the other. If not, google default router passwords and find your model, should list the factory password

@am4830 then try 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.0

if they dont work, on windows xp, go to start > run >cmd > then type 'ipconfig' without the quotes. it should say something like "default gateway" along with 192.168....

copy those numbers into your address bar and try that. for vista just go to start > and then search cmd.

look on the back of your linksys router and there should be a little pinhole that says "Reset". get a pen or toothpick and hold it for 10 - 15 seconds. then go back to 192.168.1.1 and go back to the wep key and create 1. then go back to ALL of your systems that use your wireless network. choose to forget the network and then reconnect but this time with the wep key. hope this helps

2 things:

1) a key was never actually generated in this video. WEP uses a passphrase to generate a key, the pass phrase isnt the key. you need to hit generate and that will give you the WEP key in the 4 fields you see blank. a 64bit key is 10 digits, a 128bit key is 26 digits.

2) WEP is old and easy to break. use WPA-personal or WPA2-personal. then you can just enter a passphrase and not have to worry about generating a key.

Yes, you definitly can change it back. You just need to know what your username and pass is to actually change it back to admin and admin. I don't know how to do it other than knowing what the password is to change it. You can just try Googling it. Sorry, that's all I know.

Make sure that you have a Linksys router and that you typed in 192.168.1.1 correctly.

Getting the 401 Authorization Required error page means that you tried to access a Setup page and entered an invalid password three (3) times.

To reset the password, the device must be reset to factory default settings.

Resetting the device:

Hold in the Reset button (usually located on the front or back panel) for 30 seconds.

Plug the power cord back into the device.

The 1,2,3, and 4 keys act as your back-up keys (I'm pretty sure). So, I just ignored them. Just worry about entering the passphrase at the top then save changes. If you can't ignore them, just enter the passphrase at the top and then hit generate. (You can just ignore the 1,2,3, and 4 keys if you want.) You can then just use the passphrase as your key and it should work.
