  • another game i heard about.the game looks to be neatly designed if only for that penalty flaw.silence and footsteps just screams awesomeness!

  • This game looks really cool, it worths a try. But what I'm really waiting for is the new Amnesia game. :D

    Great review!

  • In. My. Opinion.

  • this reminds me of Amnesia.i call it the 90's Amnesia.I mean that game totally resembles this one - no weapons, run from a killer, big mansion-castle like place, and other similiar stuff.

  • Ihhhh god I remember the 1st time I played this on my emulator... I couldn't sleep for weeks. Anyways, I like your videos. Keep it up!

  • I have never been this scared by a 16 bit game :(

  • a japanese game in english text?

  • @teleshaka I guess you haven't seen the Last part of the vid by the time you posted this comment

  • @Sheepy007 thats correct, this dude bores the shit out of me

  • @teleshaka That's like 99% of all games. Japan IS the industry...

  • I knew that jump scare was coming and it still got me. Son of a bitch :p

  • Interesting fact

This game was based loosely on the Italian movie "Phenomena"

  • @13:55 anyone see bobby behind roo's shoulder? Crap, and it's 3am at my place...:/

  • ummm did any one elses eyes fling wide open when Roo strobed the light and had the hedgeclipers

  • Comment removed

  • @classicrockkid123 NO! NOW FINISH HIM!!

  • 0:16 Roo wants a hug

  • Where did you get those Earthbound figures you have behind you?

  • wow i never knew they had a clock tower game on snes might pick it up played all the other clock tower games and they're creepy as hell

  • It came out towards the end of the SNES hence most people decided to give this a pass and wait for the N64

  • Excellent review, Roo (as usual).

You spoke of classic survival horror games early in the video; Have you ever played Darkseed? If not, you might give that one a try; I don't know if that really falls under survival horror or not, but it's definitely one of those titles that gets inside your head and screws with you.

  • Also, where did you get that Theme of Laura remix. I'd like to be able to find it on youtube.

  • I think as long as the company no longer sells the game in one form or another and the game is really old, they don't care if you use the rom. I believe this to especially be the case for a Japanese SNES game that is several years old. My stance on roms is this after discovering a Ripten article concerning emulation: If the game isn't available on either a compilation for the current consoles or a service like VC or Steam, it's fair game. I'll buy it if they put it out there.

  • Im... amazed

  • zero people thought the cat in the shower was unfunny

  • Where is my night light?

  • The Jennifer character looks a lot like Jennifer Connelly

  • @HyperVegito This is according to Wikipedia, so I may be wrong, but there was actually a Dario Argento movie called Phenomona that starred Jennifer Connelly as the main character, which this game was based off of, so you actually hit the mark. By the way, I'm posting this before watching the video, so if he already said all this than I didn't know.

  • @rainandmoonlight Whoa, I actually didn't know that. I'm not one for keeping up with films, but I think I've seen that one before, and it kind of reminded me of it in a way, and now I actually know why. Awesome.

  • Great Video... I will try to find this game :)

  • the only thing that sorta kills this game for me is the Bobby, I mean a midget with a giant ass scissor...that's more funny than creepy

  • Comment removed

  • @NOEXEoriginal I know you're feeling. It's like the pressure of being the victim of a scare you know is coming can sometimes be too hard to handle. It also might leave a sertain sence of paranoia where the feeling you have playing the game sticks with you after turning the system off. It's been a year but the experience of Clock tower still haunts me. Visions like the Jennifer eye closeup portrait or Lauras mutalated corpse still shock me when I see them (Even still images)

  • @felphero Bobby's not a midget he's a deformed 9 Year old boy.

  • Dammit Roo! You got me listening to Jonathan Coulton now!

  • FUCK ME, the second scare of the intro really did scare me hahahahahah

  • Agree with the psychological side (one of the reasons many people find Gigyas so freaky)*sigh* on one hand I like that you mention HVGN BUT- no mention of Splatter House?

  • Roo im surprised you dont know about their gem of a tactics game for the PS1 called Vangaurd Bandits

  • There are Game Reproductions for this. I'd probably grab it soon. I love this style of gaming.

  • likes: 270+ .. dislikes: 0. that's what i call awesome.

  • The music of Silent Hill 2! Love this game.

  • great review...

  • I never heard of this game thanks Roo, I think you should try Alien Storm a beat 'um up in the style of Golden Axe but with aliens, has a few flaws but still a solid and somewhat obsure title, keep up the good work.

  • Uhh... This game had 3 sequels. Why isn't "The Struggle Within" on the list?

  • @lappiestofdogslapdog Struggle Within was originally Ghost head.

  • thnx, i got this game (emulator ikr......) found u out through avgn am now a fan, very informative in the gems department, i will be watching more :)

  • Jonathan Coulton-Creepy Doll at the ending I'm a huge fan of him!!!!!! :D

  • yay Silent Hill 2 music :D

  • ahahhahahhahaha fuck i hate random scaring loolol ( 00:19 )

  • Still creepy after all these years...

  • Just watching you play made me scared. ; ~ ;

  • Ever since I saw Arino play through this I was pumped for a review of this game. Faved..

  • Really cool video

  • Great video, COTGW. Keep it up!

  • @clanofthegreywolf will you ever do Robotech on SNES?

  • owh what a great 18th birthday present this was :D

  • i wanna pee but im too scared to walk to the bathroom

  • 0 people are haters

  • And this is why i Don't play minecraft again.

  • I'm a big horror fan and these types of games are right up my alley. I had never heard of this one before this review. Now I've had the chance to play it and love it. Thanks for the review!

  • @downhome7500 Ever tried Amnesia? Holy crap, that game will keep you scared!

  • @tonyutter Never heard of it. What system is it on? I'd like to check that out.

  • @downhome7500 It's available on PC/Mac/Linux

  • @tonyutter Not really. I didn't find it scare at all. Im just really hard to scare i guess.

  • The face you made while you were swinging those things around was funny.

  • I like how he's introducing RE even though Silent Hill theme is playing in the back (to me SH was a better game in terms of horror)

  • Roo died :( he will be missed

  • Roo ,didn't this game appear on virtual console too?

  • @majormelthesackboy yes clock tower did appear on the wii vritual console but only in japan though

  • I just love these shows. I am so glad i began to watch shows like this, they introduced me to so many great games!!

  • I can't thank you enough for giving this game the exporsure it deserves Roo, thank you so much! Happy Halloween everyone!

If anyone is interested in the REMAKE/REIMAGINING of this special title, please visit the following Facebook Fanpage. The came is set for release sometime in 2012! Check out REMOTHERED on Facebook.

  • I really didn't find this game scary. Just beat it a few minutes ago and got the second best ending and was not scared even once. In fact i played about 30 horror games and not even once did i get scared playing them. The only game i can remember scaring me was Splatterhouse 3. Still this was a pretty enjoyable game. Great review!

  • I would like to play this and the sequels some time. I decided to scare the crap out of mysel this halloween by starting Dead Space and beatngthat for the secnd time. I, also, wtched Halloween, but I do that every year.

  • aw man .........I wanted to play this without the big E as you put it.......sigh...

  • Your second scare got me lol

  • wow.. i think this 16bit game WOULD actually be scary!

  • Human Entertainment is also responsible for Fire Pro Wrestling, now carried by Spike.

  • How about a video for the great Neo Geo series? Sure it's listed as a 24-bit system but as it was for the Turbo Grafx 16, it was still a 16-bit system with just an 8-bit composser (according to wikipedia). I am a HUGE Neo Geo fanboy and would love to see you do a video of some of their lesser known masterpieces: Cyber-Lip, Lost Blades, World Heroes Perfect, and Savage Reign? I really hope you'll do one.

  • It would be interesting to take a look to all the Clock Tower series, but i know that because of the Halloween this review was well placed.

Point and click games are my favourite genre. Thumb up.

  • pastebin.commercial/sirvCdVG (Replace commercial with com)

I made a translated script for the PSX version of the game. Primarily for my own use, thus the occasional silly translation that doesn't fit with the mood of the game. Still, it can assist someone who insists on playing with the actual cartridge instead of a ROM.

  • Baaaaah I love silent hill.

  • The game D on Saturn made me jump a few times when I was a kid. I think I was maybe 10 playing the game in the dark.

  • Do the next games?

  • Nice review. Also, what do you think of the "newer" clock tower games.

  • Giant scissors are kind of silly though.

  • (Sorry for my english)... I just saw your "Clock Tower" review, and I got stuck with it!!! Clap! clap! clap! Bravissimo! excelent job, I wanna play it!

  • im happy to say i have one of the original resident evil copies. the one with the real photos of the characters not the generated ones

  • Clock Tower, Clock Tower 2 (Clock Tower in the US), Ghost Head (Clock Tower 2 in Japan), Clock Tower Three

  • Comment removed

  • Ya I played and cleared all 4 of the ClockTower games, which may explain why I am so crazy :D.

  • I was a huge Resident evil fan on the PS1 but i never played any Clocktower games. Time to play catch up me thinks.

  • When you strongly suggest your viewers buy the original game before downloading the ROM, I assume you own the game yourself? ;-) lol

  • Okay so this looks amazing and I've heard SO much praise for this series so I'll make sure to try and play it ASAP. Also, great video! Super informative and very entertaining :)

  • The music that plays whenever the villain shows up is very chilling!

  • Gaiga Shears?

  • I knew you were gonna do something scary when the lights went back out, but its still freaked me out!

  • "Dirty yourself with the big 'E' "

I know there are people who rather own the physical copies of the game, but there's nothing wrong with Emulation...Especially in situations like these where games never come out to the US Market.

It still happens in today's gaming generation (take Ace Attorney's "Gyakuten Kenji 2" / "Miles Edgeworth 2" as a perfect example).

If game companies don't want to take the time, effort and investment on porting a title to a region, then emulate it; their loss.

  • @BlueKewne I know it's annoying when games you really want to play don't make it to your region(I'm a Tales of fan, trust me), but that doesn't justify illegal copying. At least import the original game to show that you care. Send an email. Anything.

You have no right to complain about developers not localising a desired game if you're not even willing to support it.

  • @Loliciousfuga The fact is not everybody can actually afford said games and even import it. I suggest people who emulate a certain game that is quite expensive but still want to support a certain company should buy other games from that company in a certain time period; the value of the purchases should correspond to a certain portion of the cost the other game has. That way, you are supporting many series you like, while boosting more games and still using your money for the best.

  • @Loliciousfuga Importing could be very costly and time consuming. For example, I just imported Initial D: Extreme Stage for the PS3 (The PS3 is region free)...I paid about $60 after import costs; when the retail is around $40ish. Not only that, but it took a whole MONTH for it to arrive.

And even if you import the game...you still can't really play it if it's text/voice based and you don't understand a lick of Japanese.

This is where emulation saves the day with fan made patches/translations.

  • @BlueKewne I actually second that. Total crap often still makes it here despite all the great games that get cut.... and god forbid a game is released in Japan too close to the system in question's expiry date in NA or pisses off American censorship zombies. One great example of this is Bernie Stolar representing SEGA. His discrimination against RPGs and 2D games raped the Saturn like Ted Bundy's long lost twin brother, since so many classics like Castlevania SOTN got axed (saturn port)

  • @BlueKewne thanks you for that :D I am one of those people who rather own a physical copy of their game but if the game is either too expansive or doesn't have a PAL version I use an emulator >:D their loss indeed!

  • @BlueKewne This is very true, and ninety percent of the time, people will go with emulation for old games like this. However, Roo would be silly to say it on his official gaming show, because... Well, it's official. (continued)

  • @BlueKewne As much as it sounds silly, it is an actual show and not just some random person on the internet talking. If he suggested emulation without a good reason, it would be the equivalent of a restaurant employing saying, "Yeah, you could pay for this meal, or go around back and get it for free." That employee would be kicked off the staff pretty quickly. So it's best for him to leave the emulation totally to you and instead cover his backside with physical cart suggestions.

  • @BlueKewne thats what I did with Super Famicon Wars

  • @BlueKewne Granted, it does suck if companies don't take the time to localize a game that we as gamers want, but I can't really agree that it fully justifies emulation. I don't really agree with the mindset that if I can't legitimately buy something, then it's all right to just get it for free.

  • @BlueKewne Still though, I wouldn't go as far as some to demonize people who want to emulate a game, especially something retro and obscure. I think many gamers do tend to want to legitimately support a game if it is available. Some don't though, which is pretty sad.

  • Almost as scary as Amnesia Dark Descent.

  • Roo, you really are one of coolest guys on the net.

  • Truly a gem. They don't make many games as freaky as this one. Excellent review Roo!

  • Considering that TLoZ MM is also a haloween based game, im suprised there wasnt a reference to that

  • Awesome review

  • That was a great video.

  • This game reminds me of Amnesia the Dark Descent.

  • Let it be said that Roo should never be aloud to have garden shears nearby lest you want to have your pants shat

  • And sweet home was really, really weird.

  • I loved this game, great review as always.

  • Eternal Darkness is my favorite survival horror game by far. I have to check this out!

  • There was a Snes mouse?

  • @nhaer042 Yep, it was used with Mario Paint, Might and Magic III, Wolfenstein, and more.

  • @nhaer042 yes it came with mario paint

  • I did a review of this game a few weeks ago. The Japanese Super Famicom cart is pretty expensive now (about $60 complete) but the PS1 version can still be found for relatively cheap. I got mine for around $5. Surprised you didn't mention all the Argento influences, especially since you showed one of the more famous scenes.

  • My god you made me want to play that game!! Must check ebay immediately...

  • Another great and clever video.

  • Ive played this game and i can say for shure that i've never been more scared in eny other game i've ever played. The only game that comes close is Amnesia but this seriously scared me shitless !

Clan of the gray wolf FTW !

  • @frenzetics i agree clock tower is scary as hell never been more then any other horror game i ever played

  • Who else saw 15:17 coming and weren't scared at all.

  • @SoukerWorldGaming

I did but I still got scared ,I hate Jump Scares.

  • Great review as always. Though I'd have to disagree with you about the save issue. Making the save system more archaic and/or punishing in no way made any game I've played more tense, horrifying, or scary. Nor did it make me a better player. All it did was to anger me the gamer more.

Driving a car without wheels does not make the drive more enjoyable nor does an archaic save system make a game more enjoyable. ^_^

Never got a chance to play this, but it's certainly on my list of games to play.

  • I remember after playing this game I was scared as hell! They don't make games like this anymore >< If you guys are interested in this game, you should check out the remake that a fan is making, it's called "Remothered" and it's really worth taking a look at =)

  • If any one reply to me saying doom 64 is not on the jaguar i forget to say it was on the n64

  • 15:17 Damn it! Two times in the same video!

  • Awesome job roo the first horror game was pong just kidding also there was a horror first person shooter on the jaguar called alien vs p or doom 64

  • can you explain that again about how we're supposed to get a copy if it's all in Japanese? I'm confused

  • @NadrianATRS why are you confused? you just buy a super famicom version. download rom. patch rom. play.

now if you were asking 'why'.... well there is no reason, other than maybe it's kinda cool to own a super famicom game..... or something...

  • @Cartr1dgeBased I was able to find a rom of this game in English but I feel guilty doing this

  • @NadrianATRS don't. noone is losing money here and the devs are defunct. just buy new games when you can and im sure the video game industry will forgive you.

  • Why is this review so good? :) thats one scary game. Good review omce again

  • great review!

  • 11:38 I agree.

  • For all you horror hounds, check out game reproductions for a US cart of this game with the fan translation already applied. Enjoy

  • Wow that game looks great! I played Clock Tower on the PS1 back in the day. I didn't know back then it wasn't the original but I did hear recently there was a Clock Tower game on the SFC. They pulled it off better than I could have imagined on the SNES.

  • what an awsome 18th birthday gift this is :D

  • SMW artistically better than anything? haha wait you're serious let me laugh even harder.

SMB3 looks better than World and it's on the NES.

  • @marzipanK no.

  • @marzipanK are you fucking kidding me? yes,yes you are

  • Oh, one more thing. Yeah, playing games with lights out rocks. But for some reason, Silent Service on NES was perfect for this.

  • wow i really want to play this right now. thanks!

  • i'm commander shepard and this is my favorite youtube channel on the citadel

  • 10:40 Getting the best ending first like a boss...or a walkthrough was involved

  • Resident Evil was supposed to be a remake of Sweet home actually.

  • @geno344 no, Shinji Mikami wanted it to share some of the elements of sweet home such as the manson setting. but it was never supposed to be a full fletched remake as far as I know

  • Love this game. Got all endings repeatedly, and I can still come back to this game <3

  • Hey Roo....

    MWaaaa.. Hahahahahaa! Ahh hahahahahahaaaaaaa!!!

How was that? Anyway, the Clocktower series was fantastic. It's very moody, but for my all time scary, moody game, with requisite spooky music, is Splatterhouse for the TurboGrafix 16.

I've played Sweet Home, patching the rom with the translation a few years ago. it rocks. No question, it was the inspiration for Resident Evil. Remember the opening doors?

  • lol u got me!!!! that was a good scare!!

  • the playstation one version of this game was one of the scariest game ever

  • +1 for mentioning Suito Homu.

  • Enjoying the videos, man! This game MUST be played with headphones on! It makes it way more intense, as the game actually utilizes Stereo sound.... and it let's you know which direction Bobby's coming from. :p

  • gamers who loved survival horror games dont know what there missing with clock tower and also i meant to that i thought the esrly resident evil games were really scaryi dont mean to say i the early resident evil games were really scary sorry about that i was typing too fast so great review once again roo and happy holloween

  • Is was very fitting to watch the review at night time. To be honest Roo you almost got me there with scare.

  • great review roo and great game i kinda wish that horror games today were just as scary as clock tower and i the early resident evil games were really scary but sence i played clock tower a few months ago this really really scared the crap of me in my poersonal opinion much more scarior then resident evil, silent hill and all othe survival horror games put together hell its even more scary then most horror movies at least in my mind it sucks that this never had a worldwide released

  • RE1 is one of the best games imo

  • WOW, I never expected anyone, let alone you, review this game.

    ITS VERY UNHEARD OFF.

    nice job!

  • @SNESosT Everyone enjoys a slightly backhanded compliment.

  • You didn't mention Norway with a word Roo! CURSE YOU!

  • Thanks for this one Roo. I've been dying to hear a review of this game.
