@beeroosterm I was experimenting with it last night. It's pretty simple. The tonal attack is crucial. Gary Sanford generally plays Strats through Vox AC- 30. Set your strat on the middle pickup , very subtle stereo chorus , analog delay just before it breaks up to slap back and slight gain just past breakup. ....minty minty minty
@mlmr11 Well, that's fine. What if I have a Music Man Steve Morse signature model, an Ampeg V-4, and no delays? How about I use the lower single coil, turn up the treble, and hope for the best? I always pictured the guitar on this song as a Fender Jaguar being played through a Fender Twin...jangle, jangle, joy!
@beeroosterm Oh man is that a nice guitar you have !!~ :) You have a whole bunch of different combo's you can try from that guitar. The punch of the AC- 30 is pretty evident if you listen. I can definitely hear your interpretation though ...very insightful because it's rumored that he used a vibrolux in the studio. I 've seen him a bunch and he always had those AC - 30's for live rigs .
@beeroosterm Does your amp hold it's sonic authenticity with pedals ? Because I would suggest either the lovepedal Englishman (that's what I use) or the all purpose Fulltone OCD in High Clipping mode
@mlmr11 The early '70's Ampeg V-4 takes pedals better than anything out there...but there are so many to choose from. Will take your advice for future reference. Thanks. By the way, Morse uses exactly two effects: a long and short delay, which he "meters" by the use of volume pedals into a second amp. He can change the amount of delay the farther he depresses the pedal, and he can mix them together. It's simple and gives an almost infinite range of delay. Combining them makes cool swooshy sounds
Old wave RULES. What a great song..Hard to believe it was recorded in 1978 and was virtually ignored except in England and on college radio. Killer hook, sweet harmony, all wrapped up in a great groove from one of the finest bands in rock and roll. The track sounds mostly live in the studio maybe with an overdub or two. Amazing. If you dig this, check out pre-1980 Stranglers, Police, Clash, Blondie and Talking Heads. The entire "I'm the Man" album must be heard....
Old wave rules. What a great song..another 4:00 symphony from the post-punk era of the late 70s.Killer hook, sweet harmony, all wrapped up in a great groove from one of the great underrated bands in rock and roll. The track sounds mostly live in the studio maybe with an overdub or two. Amazing.
The bass and the harp are superb. And this is far from the best song on the album -- "Geraldine and John" and "I'm the Man" both top it, and "It's Different for Girls" might too. Of course the lyrics are sort of laughable (ha ha you big bully jocks, I'm a cool punk rocker now)... but that's part of the charm!
@melodymaker135 Disagree. The guitar playing is masterful as well. Perfect power-strumming those trebly chords - whether they be triads or six-strings - are awesome!
Have to contradict;Friday tops my list, because it is just too swinging! The lyrics arent that adolescent either.Or.....oh well.......but anyhow.........most swinging song on te album!
body and soul is a greater album. still love this song though! he is the man

About five years back, he reformed the original band. Saw him at the Mercury Lounge, in NYC. Sounded great.

This has the most ridiculous guitar: super slinky/punky strumming, etc. I'd kill to play the guitar just like this...

this song is so cynical,
Joe Jackson is a brilliant social critic and musician.
have anyone read his essay on smoking, or his song for the mayor of new york, who had banned smoking
