Ron Hextall was the first Goalie to score a goal on a shot attempt.
Billy Smith is the first Goaltender to score a goal, but it wasn't on a shot attempt. The Islanders were playing the Colorado Rockies (who are now the New Jersey Devils), the Rockies pulled their Goalie on a delayed penalty call, and an errant pass slide all the way down the ice and into the empty goal, Billy Smith was the last Islander to touch the Puck - therefore he got credit for the Goal.
@tjackson76 the flying spaghetti monster is an atheist counter to a theist argument. When a thest says God's existance cannot be disproven, the counter is the FSM cannot be disproven either.. Not quite sure how that search brought him here though, lol.
That's exactly what happened. The puck bounced off Smith, and I think an LA king passed to nobody and the puck glided down the rink into an empty goal.
Doesn't make it any less of a goal. When Pavel Bure scored 59 goals in the 2000-2001 season, many of them were empty netters, but he still got credit. A goal is a goal.
I'm not talking about empty netters. I'm saying it was an own goal on the other team, he was the last person to touch the puck. Surely it is still a goal, but he didn't actually score it, so even though he gets credit, it doesn't make is any more his than it does the player on the other team.
i don't get it. how did Billy Smith get credit for a goal if he didn't score? did the buck bounce off him, and then a player from the other team (who'd suffered one too many crosschecks to the head) take the puck up ice and score on his own net by accident?
I'm pretty sure he made a save, the other team got the rebound and went to pass it back to the point, but missed and the puck went down the ice and into the net. since billy smith was the last islander to touch the puck he was credited with the goal.... I don't know but there might be video here of it...
that's pretty much the size of it, he made a save off his chest then Rob Ramage tried to drop it back and nobody was there and it just went all the way down into the net
billy smith is known as the first NHL goalie to be credited with a goal, but hextal is the first goalie to "score a goal". that's what i'm talkin about... and i can't figure out how a goalie can be the last person on a team to touch the puck before it goes into the other net, unless he shot it, or the other team is full of retards.
@therealsolstice it was a delayed penalty, so the other goalie went to the bench. Smith made a save and the puck went behind the net. The other team tried to pass it out front, but the pass went all the way down the ice and into the goal. Smith, being the last islander to touch puck, got credit for the goal.
yeah I can't agree with you there either, sorry. when you're the last person to touch the puck and the other team gets an own goal, you did'nt acctually score. but I guess for statistic reasons there has to be a "goalscorer"

yeah but the 2nd one wasn't a shot, it was an own-goal. He was credited with it because he was the last person on his team to touch the puck.

Thats the way Billy Smith was credited with his goal. He was the first nhl goalie to score but not the first to shoot and score.

it's perplexing me. can you explain it?

@therealsolstice what? no if say miller passes the puck to
the lets say islanders and they go put it into there own net
the last sabre who touched the puck is creidted and might
if so be the goalie

@Hockeyevan9992 ok i think i know
the other player on the other team scored a goal
but billy smith got criedt for it because one team can't get criedt
for putting the puck in there own net
