hondas love oil run them with low oil or old black oil and they will fuk out. neva starve an xr of fresh golden lube and let her warm up before u teach her how to flat change mines a 98 and she rumbles the hills everytime like a good adrenalin slave servant lol

Folks, I just bought an XR250 -89, approx 2 hours later the bike just cut out suddenly, instantly, no compression and wont start of course, something broke down on me? Seller sounded trustful afterwards that it cant be anything serious, more like the handle/decompressor that turns off/decompress the engine is doing something. What could have cause this sudden death? Thx for help!!!

hey, i need some help with my bike, it wont start. when i go to kickstart it the kicker thing it seizes up occasionally and it practically bounces my foot off it. if you know why it is doing this and you know how to fix its just reply back to me. thanks

Well, kickstart of the xr is known as one of the best. But have to say it takes few days to learn how to use it well. You need to get used to it.

Also, two obvious things, but perhaps u're rookie (if not, sorry). 1/ Turn your lights off before kickstarting 2/Shift in neutral gear. Push the bike - if it goes, you're neutral. If it blocks, you're engaged 3/ Make sure the small grey button under your left knee is on fuel (up:fuel, left: off, down:reserve).

i had a xr 600r that did the same....turned out it swallowed the choke butterfly,mashing it into the head.....wasnt good.

Hey, What year is your XR250? If it is a 1999 or later there is a compression reliease lever that should be on the handlebars on the brake side. to kick start properly you should gently puch down on the kick starter once or twice to build up compression and then give it one good third kick as you pull on the decompression lever to get it started. This is how I got mine started. It sounds to me that your bike just has a lot of comprsion, or it could be in gear when you are trying to start it.

like there must be a bunch of stuff getting in the way of the piston from completing the stroke. sometimes the old bikes need to be cleaned now and again. take it apart and clean it. check the piston and rings also

just be carefull a top end rebuild can cost 200 bucks upwards the main thing with these check it dont rattle or smoke whining noises also be carefull a lot of these machines have had a bad life be carefull

i have a 85 with a oil leak replaced all the gaskets and still leaks any ideas it looked like the same motor on yours im thinking it could be a warped head? but i talked to a guy he seid hed rebuild the whole thing and bore it 30 over fer like 350 thats including all the parts (depending on price) but anywase how fast are these iv been told they wer the 4 stroke of its day

is it leaking where the decompressore goes into the head . for offroad these babys will get upto about 90 mph but their geared for offroading and so arent made for top end . change sprockets for that

well the 400 and the 600 look a bigger bike altogether the 250 looks small at the side of a 400 the look of them have changed slightly over the years colours and styling nothing much else

yes any dirt bike shop sells lighting kits or can get them . the main thing is do you have registration documents to put it on road

Heyy with the big bore kit that brought u up to 280cc do u have to use racing gas? Cuase wen i get one I might bore the engine out but enough to wer i can still use pump gas.

yes it does . and yes it an idea to replace mains bearings . conrod and while ur at it . get valve stem oil seals done and valves re seated and dont forget to upjet the carb ;-]

thats a really nice and smooth sounding engine you got there. what jetting specs did you change it to? and do they work on fuel economy and power? and what piston did you use?

I upjetted it when i did the 280 conversion a 280 conversion makes a hell of a difference in power economy does suffer a bit but it just depends wot type of aggro ure giving it the piston i used wos a wiseco piston when you do the piston conversion do the mains bearings and con rod at the same time my friend did just the top end and ended up doing it all again as the conrod wos tired ;-]

im gunna buy either an 85 or later xr 250 and make it into a mean trail machine. bore it 280, put crf front end on it put lighter footpegs lighter, numberplate holder, lighter headlight just everything as light as i can possibly get it.
