I think Messi is better than him. After all, the only thing you can really compare is the stat and his stat is not impressive. However, I think he'll definitely be among the BEST in modern day football. I can totally picture him on the right wing of Barca annihilating the defences along side Messi and Alvez.
@cwaddle messi, messi, messi ... let the barca fanaticism that messi is the barca would be nothing...Pele, Garrincha, were good on all teams, messi no ...
@cwaddle he was a winger, and a playmaker, messi is a striker, just shut the fuck up, and stop fantasizing about barcelona bandwagon, i want to see messi play in any other team and see if he is as successful.
1:26 Crucial game against Spain, WC62...Brazil was close to be eliminated early in that WC. Garrincha kept that ball for a few seconds. When Garrincha would go to the right side NOBOY, I mean nobody could stop him. His acceleration was unbelievable.
Garrincha, one of the greatest players in the history of brazilian football. Only sin that has not been able to play in Europe, otherwise he would have had even more success! I wonder if other players like him will be born.
@TheMathiu91 well thers neymar now, ther was ronaldihno, ronaldo, romario, rivaldo etc... and thats just brazilians. SO yes more players have and will come like garrincha
Valencia has a similar style, but for Garrincha, the ball was his girldfriend ! Valencia sometimes looses the control of the ball. So, Valencia is a world class player, but Garrincha was a genius.
@matthewliness Similar style of dribbling, not the same skills or technique. Valencia is now the best player of my country, but Garrincha was the best in his position in football history. Valencia takes care of himself when he plays with Ecuador. Garrincha had fun every match he played. He had a child's soul.
I dont understand why people insist on saying that Maradona is the second best player after Pele. He isnt. Ronaldo , Garrincha , Zidane, Zico, Cruiff, Romario, Platini are on the same level maybe even better.
Pele foi mais versatil, a better athelte and more complete. But entendo o que hablas. Talvez Garrincho tien sido genuinamente un maior talento que Pele. ...mas nao foi definitivamente mais jogador.
thats not the point, what i mean is yes he was exceptional back in his days, but comparing him to modern footballers at current time, he is slightly above average.
the skill difference is huge between back then and now, you can see that if you focus on the defenders trying to intercept him, they are just standing there, no technique etc. its like what sg238 said, "its like a modern day player sent to the past for a laugh"
What a stupid comment! Slightly above average? We are talking about one of the best ever. So,if we take you stupid reasoning someone can say that comparing to today's swimmers, Mark Spitz is below average considering that his times during the OG 1972 would not be goodt enough to make an Olympic Final today. Stop making those stupid comparisons. Get real man.
@amirRXZ2008 look at @0:28 for example, hes been giving waaaaay too much time on the ball, and the defender standing infront of him just fucking about.
Actually this video doesnt show garrincha's best skills, if you notice at the bottom left side of the screen most of these highlights r from WC games because there arent many videos of games from that era. Try compiling a skill video of messi or CR7 only from their WCs and it will propably show u 5% of their quality, well thats the case with Garrincha here.
cero che quelli non ernao difensori lo lascivano fare quello che voleva...lo dovevi raddoppiare sempre uno come lui...e credo che così l'avresti limitato abbastanza...
Better then Messi, when defenders go against him, it's so easy to get past them, Garrincha had it more difficult, truly a legend, read his Biography by Rui Castro
@cameronAFC1 ABSOLUTELY. Those defenders in garrincha's prime did'nt go against him. Its much harder to pass the defenders if they do not move, ( if u play football urself u will know )
@tommy9882 Messi has had life in football pretty much handed to him. His Mother & Father made sure that he had a place in Boca Juniors, and his doctor has said it's pretty much unfair that he should play professional football, with all the growth hormones he's had, it's gave him strength, balance, speed and agility. Garrincha and Pelé had to work for it. Both come from poverty, both we're champions. I needn't remind you that while these 2 played for the Brazil National side, when they both playd
Garrincha was one of the top 20 players of all time. anyone who compares today's overpaid losers to him doesn't and will never understand anything about this sport. Garrincha played like this at a time when NO ONE played like this! greatest dribbler in the history of this sport. wake up young kids and learn about history!
I understand how people can see the defenders giving these guys time on the ball and think the defenders arent as good as today but thats untrue. Every player didnt get that much time on the ball. Only Brazilians because opponents feared them. Watch the great Hungary teams, they had excellent players but nobody gave them 5 yards of space. Nobody was afraid of getting embarrased by them. Even if Garrincha was tightly marked nobody was gonna take that ball.
@supernova487 Agreed its like people are looking for Excuses to say "(Insert Player Here) is better dribbler then Garrincha cuz of this(Insert Reason)" and its Pathetic!
@jaimerface - watch the games Real Madrid all season (except against Barcelona) and you will see defenders in 2010/11 looking like they don't want to play. You see that in other leagues too.... right here in 2011.
Top player but nowhere near the best dribbler ever. The likes of Maradona, Cruyff, Best and now Messi are on a different level in that respect. He was all too predictable with his dribbling, given he would always look to go on the outside and rely on his pace to get a cross in. Of course, he did have the ability to cut inside and go on a mazy run but he often took too much time on the ball and in todays game, would lose it so quickly if he did that. No doubt a legend though.
@jimmysabuba Not at all. Their fluidity with the ball at their feet was and in Messi's case, is better. Garrincha relied heavily on his pace to beat players so was more effective in wide positions. As I said also, he was very predictable in comparison to the players mentioned. He'd be afforded too much time on the ball, which he would not get now so would be more easily stopped. People like Maradona were far more decisive on the ball. Garrincha was great but there is a noticeable difference.
@Gfresh844 all those guys have somethings that Garrincha never have. A huge number of cameras and tec stuff. If you come to brazil, to rio, and talk to old people, you will maybe change your view of who was Garrincha. He gave us brazilians a world cup! Just he, Pelé just play 2 or 3 games. Even Pelé says that Garrincha was the most incredible player he ever seen. And im not telling you this becouse im brazilian and a Botafogo supporter, its becouse i love this game and people must know about!
@pedrao420 Yeah I also heard that Pele states Garrincha and Sir Stanley Matthews as the two players he enjoyed watching the most. I also always admired Garrincha above most other Brazilian players including Pele from what I have seen of the two playing.
@Gfresh844 and to make things worse, in theory he could not play football because he had crooked legs, one for each side. Doctors today can not explain how he managed to play football and be great. We, Brazilians believe that precisely because this "little" problem he was the genius he was.
what a clown you are. This guy was doing what Ronaldo is doing now 40 years ago! Typical brit you think brit players were the best but your mathew stanley was shit compared to most of the brazilian players that are in top 20.
@Damazigh Stanley Matthews wasn't as good as Garrincha, but he invented dribbling and gave it to the world of football. If you were passionate about the sport you would show some respect for the man who paved the way for all these individual talents. It's people like Matthews and Cruijff that come along and change the game and that's why they are rated so highly. There is a lot more to appreciate about football than you think. It's doesn't always have to be some childish racist debate.
@Damazigh Now that comment is worse then the guy saying Vidic would be able to keep garrincha under control. When you mention Matthews please remember this was a guy who at 50 could do things people in their early 20's could only dream off. He was also doing things that your Brazilian Greats were doing before World War II and if that never happened and interrupted English football then there would be no doubt that Matthews is the best ever
GARRINCHA PODE NÃO TER SIDO MELHOR QUE PELÉ,QUE PUSKAS OU ATÉ QUE DI STEFANO,MAS ESCREVEU AS MAIS LINDAS E PLÁSTICAS PÁGINAS DO FUTEBOL MUNDIAL....VIVA MANÉ !!! VIVA FOGÃO!!!
@esmifrado - back in those days football in south america was superior... look at th WC domination by Uruguay and Brazil. Not to mention - look what happened when the club sides played against each other. The South American clubs regularly won. The reason European club football is superior now is because they have more money...so they have better facilities... and they buy all the South American and African top talent.
@Amidat AMidat i dont remember what i said already, but...ill still answer, i dont believe i ever said european clubs were always superior, "back in the days" it was balanced, now is not, of course because of money, thats kinda obvious. But in terms of "national" talent europe would still be able to do a better team than any other continent. About "african talent" thats overrated, what talent? etoo, drogba, adebayor...essien....what else? south corea reached more far than any other african team
@esmifrado LOL! They come out of places where there is no infrastructure whatsoever. The Ghanaian team that played in 2006 only had 4-5 players who played in a club, all season long, or are effectively pros.
Also about South Korea, they had been playing in their fifth consecutive World Cup finals in 2005. Other African teams were coming in for the first or second time. Although credit to South Korea for working out such a good result for themselves.
@irishdrunk31 Fair enough. I guess it's a tad hypocritical of me to feel bad for you lads being robbed of a place at the last WC by Frace thanks to a handball, yet praise the efforts of Diego in 86. But, that just must be because I love to see the poms go down.
@franstorm Couldn't agree more. I actually have 3 Brasilians ahead of Pele on their all time greatest. Pele is pure marketing. Mardona was better than Pele, but Garrincha was better than Maradona. Garrincha, in my opinion, the greatest.
@yakamon123 - it's ok to think Garrincha was better than Pele - but to say Pele was "pure marketing" is ridiculous. What would be the marketing advantage of making a dark skinned Brazilian who originally only spoke Portuguese the face of football??? That doesn't make any sense. And his record with what Santos and the Brazil national teams is not at all hype. The skill and technique and playmaking abilities were not hype. David Beckham is pure marketing... not Pele
@Amidat My friend have you ever heard of the term "tokenism"? Look it up, and you will see Pele was and is a prime example of that. When a Brasilian wears a USA tie to a match when Brasil is playing (during World Cup 94') I don't care what you or anyone else mistakenly believe, that is PURE MARKETING - and Pele was just that! Yes, he scored some great goals, many goals. But the way football should be played and in terms of general skill Garrincha, Maradona and Di Stefano were well ahead of him
@yakamon123 - Pele being political has absolutely NOTHING to do with what he did on the pitch! No one takes a poor speaking - dark skinned man and makes him a token anything to represent a whole industry. That is a poor attempt. On top of it you are contradicting yourself by saying that he scored a lot of wonderful goals and then saying it's "pure marketing". You can't have it both ways. The proof is on the pitch.
@Amidat No, there are no contradictions, it's all fairly simple really. Pele was only seen as "O Rey" because he wasn't a drug addict or alcoholic like Maradona, Garrincha or Georgie Best. Hence, Pele = Marketing (good role model). If we ONLY focus on, what you say, "the proof on the pitch", those players I mentioned are lightyears ahead of him. In Brasil alone there were atleast 3 players better than him ON THE PITCH.
@yakamon123 - "light years ahead of him"... oh really?? explain to me what skill he could NOT do???? Is it his fault he stayed off of drugs??? WHat are you even talking about. There were MANY MANY other players they could have chosen if that was the case... and if they wanted someone exotic who was clean they could have chosen Eusebio... so I don't know what you are talking about.
@Amidat Mate you're a class act! When did I say it was Pele's "fault" for not taking drugs? I just said anyone who thinks he's the all time greatest is deluded. He's ONE OF the greatest, but NOT the greatest. My point was that people take his overly-politically correct life OFF the pitch into account WAY TOO MUCH when evaluating his all round performances ON THE PITCH. And football should ONLY ever be about what happens ON THE PITCH. Which is why Garrincha and Maradona will always be better.
@yakamon123 Being a good role model is marketing good values I think? LOL!
Better than him on the pitch? As good as, but not better. And anyways, Brazil always has had so many good players that they could win even if their first eleven don't play. I'd say they can even to this day make three FIFA WC contending teams with the players they have. They are really amazing, these South Americans
@solankijimmy This isn't a debate of how good Brasil are or not, all I ever said was that there were several players better than Pele, among them a Brasilian! - Garrincha. People automatically think that if you don't think Pele was the best that you hate him or you hate Brasil. That's BS. I like Pele, he's in my top 10, but Grrincha was the best and then came Maradona.
@solankijimmy I have never seen Pele do what Garrincha did on the ball, or what Maradona did for that fact, yeah he scored many goals, some beautiful goals but that isn't enough to warrant the best in the world tag. As for Brasil winning a WC these days with a second string team, not a chance, they can't even win it with their 1st team. This would perhaps have only ever been possible for Brasil between 1958 and 1970. But before then, they were nothing compared to Argentina and Uruguay.
@Amidat Also, if you're an asslicker (like Pele was/is of the U.S.), it doesn't matter what colour your skin is, or how funny your accent is, you're no longer a threat to them because you support them, so it has the opposite effect, a postive novelty effect. It looks better for you if you're a capitalist, anti-football, anti-latin nation like the U.S. has a black, latin american, football player as one of their ambassadors. Football was considered an exotic game, they needed an exotic face.
@yakamon123 - so I guess you are trying to tell me that Pele is only famous in America??? Since he has manners you call him names?? So what she he have done - gone to the US and tell them "you all are idiots who nothing about football"??? I don't understand your logic one bit... because the US has VERY LITTLE say in who is chosen as what in the world game. Just goes to show your dislike of Pele has absolutely nothing to do with his play on the pitch.
@Amidat No it just goes to show that once again everyones like for Pele is for his lif off the pitch. I actually appreciate his skills, but they weren't enough to make him the best.
@yakamon123 - and for the record - I'm saying who was better.... but you are absolutely ridiculous to say that Pele was all hype. Even the staunchest Maradonna fan couldn't be so ridiculous.
@Amidat Pele isn't all hype, Pele being "the best in the wrold" is the hype I'm referring to. He's still in my top 10, but far from the best. Garrincha, Maradona and Di Stefano ahead of him.
@yakamon123 - I was going by what you said... call him all marketing didn't sound like you thought he was a top 10 player. As far as on or off the pitch... what those Santos teams did in the early 60's against the best teams in South America and Europe (not just Brazil) means something.. and he was the best player on those sides. The 1970 Brazil national team is widely regarded as the best national side ever.... and he was the leader of the team. Or do you think that team was marketing too?
Imagine if Messi picked up the ball and ran at these defenders! Just imagine the carnage that would be caused... if fact, imagine if bendtner ran at these defenders! I mean com'onnn!
The Magic of Garrincha was not only the football but the person he was. Unlike Pele and the other great Garrincha was not a "professional atlete", he was just a baller who happens to be a genius.
Maradona was at his very best 25 years ago...NO modern day defender could touch him like none did then. Skill and talent is timeless...Garrincha was the same
Maradona was at his very best 25 years ago...NO modern day defender could touch him like none did then. Skill and talent is timeless...Garrincha was the same.
got to say even though im 22 and just found out about Garrincha I watched a documentry bout him, HE IS GREAT and shouldn't b compared to players of this century if the players from this century played in Garrincha's times they would have been shit compared to Garrincha.
@rustinonthevine I agree. Look at the goalkeeper at 3:01. Now, the goalie would be at his feet instantly. The way I look at it is this: I have huge respect for players like Garrincha because they took the art of attacking football (dribbling, skill, speed etc.) and raised the standard for future generations, just as Zidane raised the standard in the modern era. I respect Garrincha as a pioneer, but to say he would be just as good in the modern era is delusional.
@TenTonHorse Not just as good? Today's times sees much fitter players. Their injuries are reduced and the speed and agility of these players is outstanding. But in those times, most players wouldn't have been fit to play today at all. Lots of these players had niggling injuries, and many of them had part-time jobs, which would stress out people. Also, many of them were also chain-smokers, alcoholics and obese and unfit. Garrincha's knees were so badly gone, that they used to swell after matches.
@solankijimmy All those things had an impact, but there's a thing called evolution. Even if diet, medical and training facilities, and equipment (i.e. football boots) were inferior in Garrincha's time, technique and skill were lower. I don't know why people find this offensive; I wouldn't say that Maradona could have destroyed the defenders in Garraincha's time because Garrincha raised the standard of football and allowed the likes of Maradona to take his skills and raised it to the next level.

@cameronAFC1 ABSOLUTELY. Those defenders in garrincha's prime did'nt go against him. Its much harder to pass the defenders if they do not move, ( if u play football urself u will know )
tommy9882 7 months ago
@tommy9882 Messi has had life in football pretty much handed to him. His Mother & Father made sure that he had a place in Boca Juniors, and his doctor has said it's pretty much unfair that he should play professional football, with all the growth hormones he's had, it's gave him strength, balance, speed and agility. Garrincha and Pelé had to work for it. Both come from poverty, both we're champions. I needn't remind you that while these 2 played for the Brazil National side, when they both playd

JPLV 7 months ago
I understand how people can see the defenders giving these guys time on the ball and think the defenders arent as good as today but thats untrue. Every player didnt get that much time on the ball. Only Brazilians because opponents feared them. Watch the great Hungary teams, they had excellent players but nobody gave them 5 yards of space. Nobody was afraid of getting embarrased by them. Even if Garrincha was tightly marked nobody was gonna take that ball.

kuken3000 9 months ago
Top player but nowhere near the best dribbler ever. The likes of Maradona, Cruyff, Best and now Messi are on a different level in that respect. He was all too predictable with his dribbling, given he would always look to go on the outside and rely on his pace to get a cross in. Of course, he did have the ability to cut inside and go on a mazy run but he often took too much time on the ball and in todays game, would lose it so quickly if he did that. No doubt a legend though.
Gfresh844 9 months ago
@Gfresh844 how can u say maradona cruyff and best and even messi are on a different level to garricha? - absoloute disgrace
jimmysabuba 9 months ago
@jimmysabuba Not at all. Their fluidity with the ball at their feet was and in Messi's case, is better. Garrincha relied heavily on his pace to beat players so was more effective in wide positions. As I said also, he was very predictable in comparison to the players mentioned. He'd be afforded too much time on the ball, which he would not get now so would be more easily stopped. People like Maradona were far more decisive on the ball. Garrincha was great but there is a noticeable difference.
Gfresh844 9 months ago
@Gfresh844 all those guys have somethings that Garrincha never have. A huge number of cameras and tec stuff. If you come to brazil, to rio, and talk to old people, you will maybe change your view of who was Garrincha. He gave us brazilians a world cup! Just he, Pelé just play 2 or 3 games. Even Pelé says that Garrincha was the most incredible player he ever seen. And im not telling you this becouse im brazilian and a Botafogo supporter, its becouse i love this game and people must know about!
pedrao420 7 months ago 2
@pedrao420 Yeah I also heard that Pele states Garrincha and Sir Stanley Matthews as the two players he enjoyed watching the most. I also always admired Garrincha above most other Brazilian players including Pele from what I have seen of the two playing.
stokiescott 7 months ago
@stokiescott stanley who? mathew stanley was shit compared to most of the brazilian players[2]
pedrao420 7 months ago
@Gfresh844 and to make things worse, in theory he could not play football because he had crooked legs, one for each side. Doctors today can not explain how he managed to play football and be great. We, Brazilians believe that precisely because this "little" problem he was the genius he was.
pedrao420 6 months ago
@pcyuljr
what a clown you are. This guy was doing what Ronaldo is doing now 40 years ago! Typical brit you think brit players were the best but your mathew stanley was shit compared to most of the brazilian players that are in top 20.
Damazigh 9 months ago 3
@Damazigh Stanley Matthews wasn't as good as Garrincha, but he invented dribbling and gave it to the world of football. If you were passionate about the sport you would show some respect for the man who paved the way for all these individual talents. It's people like Matthews and Cruijff that come along and change the game and that's why they are rated so highly. There is a lot more to appreciate about football than you think. It's doesn't always have to be some childish racist debate.
RelaxItsJustAFlare 9 months ago 11
@Damazigh Now that comment is worse then the guy saying Vidic would be able to keep garrincha under control. When you mention Matthews please remember this was a guy who at 50 could do things people in their early 20's could only dream off. He was also doing things that your Brazilian Greats were doing before World War II and if that never happened and interrupted English football then there would be no doubt that Matthews is the best ever

Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat AMidat i dont remember what i said already, but...ill still answer, i dont believe i ever said european clubs were always superior, "back in the days" it was balanced, now is not, of course because of money, thats kinda obvious. But in terms of "national" talent europe would still be able to do a better team than any other continent. About "african talent" thats overrated, what talent? etoo, drogba, adebayor...essien....what else? south corea reached more far than any other african team
esmifrado 9 months ago
@esmifrado LOL! They come out of places where there is no infrastructure whatsoever. The Ghanaian team that played in 2006 only had 4-5 players who played in a club, all season long, or are effectively pros.
Also about South Korea, they had been playing in their fifth consecutive World Cup finals in 2005. Other African teams were coming in for the first or second time. Although credit to South Korea for working out such a good result for themselves.

yakamon123 9 months ago
he was better than pèle
franstorm 10 months ago 3
@franstorm Couldn't agree more. I actually have 3 Brasilians ahead of Pele on their all time greatest. Pele is pure marketing. Mardona was better than Pele, but Garrincha was better than Maradona. Garrincha, in my opinion, the greatest.
yakamon123 10 months ago
@yakamon123 - it's ok to think Garrincha was better than Pele - but to say Pele was "pure marketing" is ridiculous. What would be the marketing advantage of making a dark skinned Brazilian who originally only spoke Portuguese the face of football??? That doesn't make any sense. And his record with what Santos and the Brazil national teams is not at all hype. The skill and technique and playmaking abilities were not hype. David Beckham is pure marketing... not Pele
Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat My friend have you ever heard of the term "tokenism"? Look it up, and you will see Pele was and is a prime example of that. When a Brasilian wears a USA tie to a match when Brasil is playing (during World Cup 94') I don't care what you or anyone else mistakenly believe, that is PURE MARKETING - and Pele was just that! Yes, he scored some great goals, many goals. But the way football should be played and in terms of general skill Garrincha, Maradona and Di Stefano were well ahead of him
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 - Pele being political has absolutely NOTHING to do with what he did on the pitch! No one takes a poor speaking - dark skinned man and makes him a token anything to represent a whole industry. That is a poor attempt. On top of it you are contradicting yourself by saying that he scored a lot of wonderful goals and then saying it's "pure marketing". You can't have it both ways. The proof is on the pitch.
Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat No, there are no contradictions, it's all fairly simple really. Pele was only seen as "O Rey" because he wasn't a drug addict or alcoholic like Maradona, Garrincha or Georgie Best. Hence, Pele = Marketing (good role model). If we ONLY focus on, what you say, "the proof on the pitch", those players I mentioned are lightyears ahead of him. In Brasil alone there were atleast 3 players better than him ON THE PITCH.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 - "light years ahead of him"... oh really?? explain to me what skill he could NOT do???? Is it his fault he stayed off of drugs??? WHat are you even talking about. There were MANY MANY other players they could have chosen if that was the case... and if they wanted someone exotic who was clean they could have chosen Eusebio... so I don't know what you are talking about.
Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat Mate you're a class act! When did I say it was Pele's "fault" for not taking drugs? I just said anyone who thinks he's the all time greatest is deluded. He's ONE OF the greatest, but NOT the greatest. My point was that people take his overly-politically correct life OFF the pitch into account WAY TOO MUCH when evaluating his all round performances ON THE PITCH. And football should ONLY ever be about what happens ON THE PITCH. Which is why Garrincha and Maradona will always be better.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 Being a good role model is marketing good values I think? LOL!
Better than him on the pitch? As good as, but not better. And anyways, Brazil always has had so many good players that they could win even if their first eleven don't play. I'd say they can even to this day make three FIFA WC contending teams with the players they have. They are really amazing, these South Americans
solankijimmy 9 months ago
@solankijimmy This isn't a debate of how good Brasil are or not, all I ever said was that there were several players better than Pele, among them a Brasilian! - Garrincha. People automatically think that if you don't think Pele was the best that you hate him or you hate Brasil. That's BS. I like Pele, he's in my top 10, but Grrincha was the best and then came Maradona.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@solankijimmy I have never seen Pele do what Garrincha did on the ball, or what Maradona did for that fact, yeah he scored many goals, some beautiful goals but that isn't enough to warrant the best in the world tag. As for Brasil winning a WC these days with a second string team, not a chance, they can't even win it with their 1st team. This would perhaps have only ever been possible for Brasil between 1958 and 1970. But before then, they were nothing compared to Argentina and Uruguay.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@Amidat Also, if you're an asslicker (like Pele was/is of the U.S.), it doesn't matter what colour your skin is, or how funny your accent is, you're no longer a threat to them because you support them, so it has the opposite effect, a postive novelty effect. It looks better for you if you're a capitalist, anti-football, anti-latin nation like the U.S. has a black, latin american, football player as one of their ambassadors. Football was considered an exotic game, they needed an exotic face.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 - so I guess you are trying to tell me that Pele is only famous in America??? Since he has manners you call him names?? So what she he have done - gone to the US and tell them "you all are idiots who nothing about football"??? I don't understand your logic one bit... because the US has VERY LITTLE say in who is chosen as what in the world game. Just goes to show your dislike of Pele has absolutely nothing to do with his play on the pitch.
Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat No it just goes to show that once again everyones like for Pele is for his lif off the pitch. I actually appreciate his skills, but they weren't enough to make him the best.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 - and for the record - I'm saying who was better.... but you are absolutely ridiculous to say that Pele was all hype. Even the staunchest Maradonna fan couldn't be so ridiculous.
Amidat 9 months ago
@Amidat Pele isn't all hype, Pele being "the best in the wrold" is the hype I'm referring to. He's still in my top 10, but far from the best. Garrincha, Maradona and Di Stefano ahead of him.
yakamon123 9 months ago
@yakamon123 - I was going by what you said... call him all marketing didn't sound like you thought he was a top 10 player. As far as on or off the pitch... what those Santos teams did in the early 60's against the best teams in South America and Europe (not just Brazil) means something.. and he was the best player on those sides. The 1970 Brazil national team is widely regarded as the best national side ever.... and he was the leader of the team. Or do you think that team was marketing too?

rustinonthevine 10 months ago
@rustinonthevine I agree. Look at the goalkeeper at 3:01. Now, the goalie would be at his feet instantly. The way I look at it is this: I have huge respect for players like Garrincha because they took the art of attacking football (dribbling, skill, speed etc.) and raised the standard for future generations, just as Zidane raised the standard in the modern era. I respect Garrincha as a pioneer, but to say he would be just as good in the modern era is delusional.
TenTonHorse 10 months ago
@TenTonHorse Not just as good? Today's times sees much fitter players. Their injuries are reduced and the speed and agility of these players is outstanding. But in those times, most players wouldn't have been fit to play today at all. Lots of these players had niggling injuries, and many of them had part-time jobs, which would stress out people. Also, many of them were also chain-smokers, alcoholics and obese and unfit. Garrincha's knees were so badly gone, that they used to swell after matches.
solankijimmy 9 months ago
@TenTonHorse I think that given today's medical facilities and incentives, they would have been much better than many 'stars' today.
solankijimmy 9 months ago
@solankijimmy All those things had an impact, but there's a thing called evolution. Even if diet, medical and training facilities, and equipment (i.e. football boots) were inferior in Garrincha's time, technique and skill were lower. I don't know why people find this offensive; I wouldn't say that Maradona could have destroyed the defenders in Garraincha's time because Garrincha raised the standard of football and allowed the likes of Maradona to take his skills and raised it to the next level.
TenTonHorse 9 months ago
