  • Some Owsley Acid and the Moodies, what a time.

  • Psychedelics were so demonized but now research is revealing that taking psilocybin mushrooms can vastly improve one's metal health and quality of life, the maps organization is leading the way in freeing scientists to research these promising compounds.

read "Marijuana Gateway to Health" to learn more about how the government blocks research into restricted substances in order to wage the drug war.

  • Skroderdienas in chillmachi

  • July 5,1985. seen them outdoors at Canada's wonderland. celebrating my birthday. One of my fondest memories

  • Happy 70th Ray Baby!!!!

  • @ziggy107 - Wow! You actually read that book - I'm amazed. You clearly know much more than I do about this stuff. Yeah, that's a great quote regarding research - it's a sad story. Glad that now they're starting research again. Music? Yeah, maybe. I love a lot of psychedelic music, but I don't believe that great music wasn't produced without it - look at punk. Beautiful song this one, though!

  • @ziggy107 - thanks! An essential book is 'Acid Dreams' which is mostly about MK-ULTRA. I've only scanned it in a bookstore, and I'm sure it's out of print. Yes, I read recently that they've done some extremely positive legal research with psilocybin, but I forget the details.

  • @131flora Have it/read it ;) Looks to still be in print (amazon.com).

  • @131flora regarding research, the authors of a follow-up study in 1999, with people involved in LSD research before criminalization, state it very well in my opinion: "This follow-up study confirms the lost opportunity suffered by science, medicine and religion when psychedlic research was shut down for essentially political, symbolic reasons". To that I would add music!, given all the beautiful, evocative songs that were produced, such as this one.

  • @ziggy107 - well said. I totally agree. Much appreciated.

  • @131flora My pleasure. Has been an area of personal curiosity and interest for a long time, and I'm glad to exchange views with someone else in the know. Hopefully someday in the future, this area can be explored again in peace. On a positive note, I've heard of the return of some limited, sanctioned psychedelic research lately.

  • ziggy107 Yeah, sure, that's what I meant

  • ziggy107 - thanks for your interest. Actually I've forgotten most of this. For openers, he got his LSD from the CIA in conjunction with MK-ULTRA, which was a CIA experiment to see if

LSD and other psychedelics could brainwash people. He's responsible for at least one million bad trips. As Owsley pointed out, he refused to shut up - as a consequence, all these psychedelics are extremely illegal. Plus I saw a fairly recent interview with Leary where he says that he supported the Weathermen.

  • @131flora Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was aware of Owsley's (recently passed) views on Leary, which seemed justified. Seems like it was a good scene, with a lot of potential, that quickly came to an end. There were a lot of reasons for that, of course, but Leary's message and influence most certainly accelerated it, unfortunately including the criminalization.

  • @ziggy107

His influence definitely accelerated it, but at the same time, Leary did more then any other person on Earth to spread the FACTUAL information concerning these drugs and the potential of mystical-spiritual experience. I think, all in all, we can forgive him for pushing too hard. That was just his style haha. To primarily blame him, rather then the perverse government which enslaved the research, is to miss the point (I think you'd agree).

  • @131flora By fairly recent interview, I guess you mean within the last 20 years, as Leary has been dead for the past 15. Really dead, not in the Moody Blues sense of the word :-)

  • i was in a terrible mood. then this started playing on my ipod <3 feeling muuuuuch better now :)

  • This is a beautiful song, but, excuse me, i hope he rots in hell

  • @131flora be curious why? ;)

  • Moodies are my favorite group of all time! I have seen them in concerts several times. I remember putting the old 33 on the record player and put my headphones on and just enjoyed the music. That was the 70's and I did not listen to disco so I was happy I had the Moodies.

  • Beauty!! Love this song, Moody Blues!! is great!

  • A similar sound to early Pink Floyd?

  • 4:50 Moody Blues "unplugged" :)

  • One of my favorites. GREAT!!!

  • Superb!! When are the Moodies going into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ? :(

  • @ocarrington when there's a real RRHF instead of a political one.

  • The flute from 4:00-on is surreal. I had the opportunity recently to enjoy part of Huffman's stash. Yes, one of the original batches from over 40 years ago. This song was an integral part of that trip, as it was 40 years ago.

  • @HVYMETL it was even more amazing in concert! We miss you, Ray. Hope you are enjoying the well-deserved retirement.

  • This is really interesting. A video from that long-gone era when English people weren't black or Pakistani.

  • @RealityCheckHero I just crapped my pants! Caught me way off guard!

  • @RealityCheckHero what goes around comes around eh, just like the british in india.

  • ....and Pakistan among other countries (Nigeria for example) were colonialized by Britain, yes, but I suppose you already knew that.

  • I actually just discovered Moody Blues. I have to say that I`m instantly hooked.

  • An actual song about LSD, Take trip around the bay.

  • 7 idiots clicked dislike

  • I was quite young then..first time I heard a MELLOTRON...

  • Leary traveled with the Moodies.

  • i garentee you they were hanging out with dr leary...lol beautifull song though...i love the moodies

  • Mike's perfect pitch-bending Mellotron in this song is awesome.

  • Ray Thomas is phenomenal in this song

  • couldn't get much sound out of it, anyway got the album.great to be able 2 see this clip, one of my ALL TIME BEST BANDS!!:>>

  • The chorus of Elbow's 'One Day Like This' owes a lot to this song.

  • One of the best tunes from one of the best Bands. The fact that there's a freaking video makes it magic!

  • I always liked the diving airplane guitar effect at the end.

  • What an awesome song. I got turned onto the Moodies when my next door neighbor played In Search of the Lost Chord for me in 1974. Can't tell you how much their music has meant to me over the years. Their will never be another band like them.

  • are they singing about out of body exerience / astral projection? i presume so, but does anyone have any insights?

  • @WangXiaojun1974 It's a tune about pyschologist Timothy Leary, he was the guru of LSD in the 60's, encouraging people to "turn on, tune in, drop out"

  • "No, no, no, no, he's outside...looking in."

  • The Moody Blues were, along with the Beatles and Vanilla Fudge were ahead of their time. My older brothers introduced me to them, they would drop a tab and put their records on along with others. I've like them since I first heard them and continue to 40 years later. Dream music they called it.

  • One of the Moody's all time best songs on one of their all time best albums. Hard to imagine it's been 43 years already---where's it all gone?! Great tune--thanks for posting this true classic!

  • @SpiritsHavinFlown OOOOh I see you spammed me Jennifer oh that so hurts I think I might go kill myself LOL :P

  • Actually this song and this album is an anti drug album and has very little to do with LSD. IF you listen you will hear them tell you throughout the album that they went down that road and found nothing and now were changing course.

  • This song was always playing on my stereo when I took a trip to the stars and back.

  • Heard this for the first time on the radio yesterday, I really like it.

  • To those who are bringing race into the discussion of this record and the Moody Blues in general, you are missing the whole point of the Moodies unifying spiritual and peaceful message. But let's not be judgemental perhaps they just haven't had the opportunity to listen to the fist seven albums from front to back. If they did I believe their attitude would change. Peace.

  • The harmonics of this song brings calm to my heart and soul... love this.

  • @zazozung I agree buddy.

  • The Moody Blues are a band of truly timeless music that is pure magic and beauty to the soul!! It is just mesmerizing and true perfectionl!! The Moodies forever!! ♥♥

  • The hair stands up on my neck during the instrumental starting at about 4:30, after the flute solo. One of my favorite psychedelic tunes.

  • The Moodies are absolutely phenomenal!! A band of purely timeless and beautiful music that can never be matched!! Their music has captured the souls of many through the years and still to this day!! Their music reaches the depths of every emotion in my soul!! They are brilliant and pure perfection at its best!! The Moodies forever my friends!! ☺♥xoxo

  • I saw the MB last week (5/4) here in Okla. They did not sing this song, but the flute player, Norda Mullen, was wonderful on the flute. I suspect one reason they did not sing this is because, no disrespect to Norda, she probably can't do justice to the vocals that Ray Thomas did. She has splendidly filled his flute spot with her fabulous playing though, IMHO.

  • @fbenenati I have the music from the Moody Blues since I was in middle school in the early seventies..I will turn 55 this August..The tunes are just as great as they were in the early seventies.....My wife surprised me a few weeks ago and told me that she had popped for a pair of tickets for us to go see the MB's in Woodinville, WA on 04 June.....I CANNOT wait......Any special thing to watch for in the concert or just kick back and soak it all in ?

  • @borecleaner1 Thanks for replying. To answer your question, mainly just lay back and enjoy. But Norda was the person that caught my eye the most - just splendid on the flute. You will note that besides Graeme Edge, there is another drummer. There are also other additions: another young lady on guitar and vocals, behind Norda. Also, a gentleman on keyboards on the right side, as you face the stage. Graeme, John and Justin are all still amazing and can belt them out! Enjoy!

  • Haunting - computer speakers can't do it justice.

  • Truly to Me the Greatest Band,Beautiful Music, always will Love their Music for all time!

  • Who put the LSD in Mrs. Murphy's martini?

  • The video I like. Odd but original song. Great work on the instruments and overall sound,

  • This would have been the perfect song to play when Timothy Leary, the major league pitcher, came in from the bullpen.

  • funny how mike makes fun of this dubbed sound/lip sync video. just as the camera pans away from the band in the end he's playing "keys" on top of his mellotron's cabinet lol

  • I always thought Justin Hayward was good-looking.

  • They are wrong. Timothy Leary is immortal...

  • @likespinningplanets We are all immortal. But where will we spend eternity is the question.

  • Leary was culture the Government wanted to shut down. Thats why they put him in prison for a couple of joints. No problem, the Weather Underground broke him out of prison and on to Algeria. He was so intramental in breaking us out of the 50s mentality. For sure Acid opened up a great generation that was so cool. The Moody Blues were the 2nd best band from our generation behind the Doors.

  • Timothy Leary wasn´t a saint. But I think he himself tried to cure the humankind with LSD. He said that it wasn´t drug at all. I think we cannot take moral view in that. LSD changed the world in the late 1960´s a lot. And we are living still iin that memory.

The world before that was totally different and will never come back. Leary wasn´t a totally bad person he thought that LSD could awake some new hope and views in the humankind.

  • As much as I love this video, I think that at the end I would have had the band members run behind the camera so that they would end up standing in that last camera shot as the camera panned to the left. They could be holding invitations to the estate, and the camera could have panned back to the gate, where the viewer finds it closed with guards out front. That way, it would play to the "trippy" effect, allowing the viewer to wonder if all that playing inside the estate really happened? HA!

  • I'm sorry , but this is one of the very best music videos ever made. I'm serious, though I may have shallow taste. I think it's great !!!

  • When music was ... music... and you heard the talent of the performers.

  • It's a shame that music is not like this anymore. Instead you got all the stuff @lscence1 mentioned before and the dancing choreographing has gotten really annoying to me (since everyone does it, now).

  • Dance at 04:52 FTW!

  • this is the best music you will ever hear.

  • One of their best, and totally trippy tune.

  • The Moody Blues have been my favorite since 1969. I like the song even though Leary was a lie.

  • There is not a band around now that would be close to the talent, and sound of the Moodies, or the top 50 bands of 1970. We hope for a generation to come along with the spirit of the 60s. This generation is leaning right, with the sheep mentality like the losers that followed Nixon. The Tea-Baggers have woken up the far left. Get involved, join SDS, or help start a new chapter. Got to have a revolution ever so often.

  • @jim196869 Correct. I was born in 1968 and this song is one of the best i have ever heard. I knew nothing of this Moody Blues era until Radio 2 played this song. The flute player deserves legendary status alone.

  • is that Millbrook?

  • Makes me want to look up The Merry Band of merchants.

  • Enjoy the music the world is lost I found out.Its all connected and that is sad.

  • HELLO MOODY BLUES TRADERS:

How does one obtain a LOSSLESS copy of any of these classic videos, i.e, a videotape, or a DVD transfer of a videotape. What is this video derived from? I want all this Moody Blues material in the best quality possible.

  • @DrCymbaline go on download.com and get youtube downloader.

  • such an underrated band!

  • timeless.

  • timeless.

  • how did they knw he would die.....must have been the LSD!!!!

  • @legallybinding-I know what you mean! I'm 45, never did drugs, have enjoyed this song over the course of some 30 years, and it does definately do something to your imagination! I love it!

  • I heard this song for the first time aged 14 at a friend's house and we were listening to her mother's old cassette tapes...It has haunted me ever since and it has become one of my favourite songs ever. Even now age 33 it never fails to give goosebumps. Sometimes something ever so slightly transcendent and supernatural gets captured in a song and this is such a song/musical piece. I've never taken an intoxicant of any kind in my life but this song does odd things to my imagination!! Weird !

  • I've never heard of this song until I joined the Navy and went to my first ship. This got added to the list of Moody Blue songs that are my favorites!

  • I've never heard of this song until I joined the Navy and went to my first ship. After that, I hated my radio station at home for not playing great songs like this one.

  • Was Tim right or wrong? I think as he said before he left for furthur places Turn On TUNE in Take Over!

  • Moodies, Jethro Tull, The Nice, (later ELP) King Crimson, Early Genesis, Elton John, and Syd Barrett Pink Floyd all were highly intelligent artists that put out music that was born from extreme talent and strict musical upbringing. 1967-1972 was golden for all of these bands. It all got too"musical industry" after that.

Every one of these bands stand high above what else came out during that time, and gave us the birth of "prog rock!"

  • @theqman1956 Agree totally but don't forget Strawbs! and I still can't do the 3 hour drive to my parents without listening to Jethro Tull the whole way....

  • @jgkeller192 Round and Round...loved that song and yes I have the album...totally forgot about them!

  • The missing link between the Beatles and early Genesis. Listen to "Revolver" and then "From Genesis to Revelation": you'll get that's Moody Blues. And, oddly enough, in part, the early Bee Gees! :-)

  • My local classic rock station made sure to play this as soon as they got word that Timothy Leary had actually died. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd had the cart ready for *years* in preperation for that eventuality.

  • Jesus... Justin Hayward used to be SO f'ing gorgeous !!!

  • Supergroup!!

  • Piece of art!

  • Was a great song to get stoned by(as I can attest to!).

  • Ray now has his own website raythomas.me-why not visit

  • This, young folk, is what is called a Masterpiece. Thank you, Ray, for this timeless gem.

  • There is not a current band close to the Moody Blues. Beatles, Doors, Moodies, the best ever.

  • LOVE this song! And now I LOVE the video! Thanks for posting, pauloalves81! The guys were also ahead of their time with the videos made!

  • one of many haunting, brilliant and beautiful songs by the moody blues

  • This is atmospheric.

  • Beautiful song!

  • Hello im Werner.......Im older now (61) I dont have long blond hair anymore. Short white grey, with almost bald spot. I wish i could go back to them 60s 70s. I was at a friends house down in the basement stoned on blue cross. When this song played it took me into new dimentions that were unbeliveble. It mellowed my life out . But there are things that i would do differently if i had a chance........I live in germany now.......and i really love life.......lets bring back LOVE!!!!!

  • I heard this song from Caroline FM and since then I became a big Moody Blues fan. Usually , you get bored of a song after you hear it many times, though I like it more and more every time . Fantastic! Shame that today nobody makes music of this level

  • I have to say that Justin looks rather sexy in this video!! Damn!! Ok, with that said, it is a real shame they dont make music like this today. I mean, think of all the instruments that The Moody Blues used in their music. Clarinets, flutes , etc. The music of today doesnt use anything but machines. If only we could have REAL music like this today. Music with meaning and emotion. Music that is deep. Makes you think. That is what The Moodies gave us and it still touches our souls to this day! :)

  • I have always loved this song. I so grew up on The Moody Blues!! What a magnificent and magical band with so much absolute talent. Pure genius indeed!! My dad used to play this song when i was a little girl and it scared me to death!! I seriously thought Timothy was outside looking in our window!! lol This song and video just rocks completely!! The Moody Blues were a band all their own who put out some very phenomenal music in their time. Missing those days and missing my dad. RIP Pop <3

  • Perfectly English... Genius

Thank you so much for posting this... During the 80s I was on a huge Moody Blues kick.

  • I love this song- real groovy! I tripped to this song once- back in the 70's. And I love the English manor in the video. They sure don't make music, or buildings, like this anymore!

  • @london2z The English manor is actually a castle in Belgium.

  • @johnnycheck99 Oops-my bad.

  • Ray Thomas totally looks like he's from the 19th century. I know that style of clothing and hair came back in the '60s, but still...

I have not found a better structured song than this one ANYWHERE!

  • @mailbox827 I agree!

  • When you go on this trip, you should leave your bags behind...

  • so does anybody know if they were mocking tim leary or just singing about him and his ideas??

  • @purplecan26 No, they weren't mocking him at all. Actually the Moodies and Timothy were friends. They also wrote a few other songs about Mr Tim. RIP my window paine friend.

  • @sgtdarkness1 so the moody blues did drop acid??..i always thought they were a trippy band but my dad likes them and he is very anti drugs, and i could see them as being kind of goody to shoes

  • @purplecan26 No idea, but they did write some trippy music for sure. I don't think they were "goody two shoes" at all, however, they were educated musicians who could write and read music at will. Most of music today is spoon fed to the artists by corporate writers just to generate the almighty dollar.......

  • They took rock and roll to a new level and for that I will always respect them! This is music for the soul!!!!

  • This is about the 4th album i ever bought...and i still have it....on vinyl of course. i was 16 then.

  • The boys got thier kickoff in 1864 with GO NOW.

Have a look at Cliff Richard and his early stuff. He is still going strong too.

    Tom Loughlin Jr.

  • @telsport They must be REALLY old!!

  • Outstanding music, lyrics, harmony.. I revisit often

  • What is that building that they're standing outside of?

  • @Mrtraveler01 I read somewhere the building is one of the Moodies homes. I think Justin's but I really don't know about that.

  • Meaning in a pop song????? Good Lord!!!

  • It's a real crime that the Moodys aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....

  • @Mazdaracer16 As long as the idiots running the RNRHOF are more interested in inducting punk and alternative acts, the Moodies will never get in.

  • @TheJohnnyCotts You're right, of course. But we shouldn't care or even talk about that asinine institution---we should consign it to oblivion. "Rock Journalism" is a laughable wasteland of the Empty pouring Nothing into the Void.

  • The last two minutes are amongst my favorite bits of music ever.

  • Great song!

    GOD Justin's sexy.

Especially in his ruffle shirts ;]

  • awesome song!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @believeitornotgc Late 60's were generally psychedelic like this.

  • Now we just need some whiggers to put some rap beats to it and fuck it all up, maybe some turntable work and some scratchin'. I has rap?

  • All of the Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder tracks from their prog period are A+.

  • Ray wore a puffy shirt but didn't want to be a pirate. heh. His best song, despite

    the loon it was about.

  • I remember watching Moody Blues play Legend of The Mind in the old Boston Garden when you could smoke and light matches. It felt like a religious experience.

  • There was a major league pitcher named Timothy Leary. I always thought that this would have been the logical song to play when he pitched, especially if he came in in relief...

    "Timothy Leary's dead."

What might that have done to his psyche as he entered a game?

  • My friend DBKTube: You read Steppenwolf, I read Steppenwolf therefore: We are.

  • Fantastic, ten stars!!!

  • so different from "go now".... love it!! this is true psychedelic music.... it's real

  • This is an amazing and addictive song cannot stop playing it, beautiful tune and a beautiful looking singer to go with it!! They cannot be beaten!!

  • his death has to do with metaphors about Leary's work on the Tibetan Book of the Dead and shrooms and LSD's connection to that work

  • the point the Moody Blues were making was that with the arrest of Timothy Leary, people would forget about him, therefore he would be "dead".

  • I saw the Moody Blues in Vancouver in 2007. They are definitely not wearing Depends and are as wonderful today as they were when I first started listening to them over 40 years ago.

  • So interesting that "Timothy Leary" wasn't dead at this point. And, also that Leary was very into being one of the first people to have his death recorderd on the internet. Despite that troubling post-history, this is a beautiful song and situates the Moody Blues in their psychedelic origins. I love it!!

  • I learned to play this song on guitar thanks to my teacher. I'm not into drugs but this music is spellbinding to me. I almost can't believe this song is from so long ago and that these guys are probably wearing depends nowadays. my other favorites to play on guitar by this band are The Story In Your Eyes and You Can Never Go Home. And their song Om has me interested in learning Sitar.

  • this man they are singing about sounds a bit like Micheal O Leary:-) who sure aint dead:-) LONG LIVE RYAN AIR AND O LEARYS FIELD WHERE I HEAR THERE IS AN AIRSTRIP:-)

  • why would anyone give a heck about a rock and roll hall of fame title when 99% of people dont even know what it's based on or does, and only understands the name "rock and roll" "hall of fame"

The moodies are not in it but they're already in the real hall of fame of rock n roll music as pioneers of Symphonic Rock music. That's way better.

  • Great point just like a Grammy hall means really anything.

  • I hate to be one of those "retro assholes" lamenting about the "good old days" but let's be realistic, there's nothing going on in modern music that has the depth, weight & complexity of the Moody Blues.

Anyone reading this that wants to share some other gems with me, feel free to do so.

  • Boards of Canada.

  • @JESUSD34N i totally agree with ya,just today i was driving and listening to the radio, and every station they were playin garbage ,it didnt even make sense,we only have like 2 classic rock stations, but they put in some of the stuff from today.like owl city, matt and kim, daughtry,to name a few.you know thats what i'm talkin about

  • @JESUSD34N If appreciating good music is being a retro rectal orifice than so be it.

  • @JESUSD34N

Not in what you hear on the radio, but it is still out there. The Beta Band, Dead Can Dance, Air, The Orb and many others have taken the reigns and are still putting this type of message and music together.

  • @JESUSD34N

    Beardfish. Look it up

  • @JESUSD34N

    Beardfish. Look it up

Not saying this isn't good, just saying it's a bit limiting to say that nothing new is good when you haven't heard a lot of things

  • @Iscence1

When I wrote "modern music", I was actually speaking of the fodder we get spoon fed from the almighty MUSIC INDUSTRY. Songs have to be between 2:30 and 3:00 min. long, must have many Whoop Whoops, P.I.M.P. Hey Ho, smack my bitch up's and one steady beat that never varies. During which, the artists must pose, smile, dance, twitch, jig
