Also to add, I felt it could have been a bit better if they had made the setting and story exactly the same as in the book (i.e..the family living in Boston (as in the book) rather than New York). Had this been done, I'm sure it would have been a box office hit. However, Kal Penn, Irfaan Khan Tabu and other actors did a great job in the acting & the mood of the story and dialogue was good overall. Would rate it as 3 out of 5 stars.

Honesty, the book was better as it was more detailed & more in depth. However, this movie still was descent & very touching in certain aspects...just wished it was not too rushed & had embedded more detail to it, i.e, the story of Ashoke & his accident, which did was not too elaborated. Also it excluded many other parts from the book & I wished it was a bit more realistic in some parts, i.e, when Ashima had Gogol, it appeared she gave birth to a 4 month old (LOL!).

this is a great movie. im not indian but my fiance' is bengali. great way to learn about the culture and the lives of other people. i can also relate in many ways. this is a movie for real people who like to see cinema about the human condition. not just shoot em up bang bang. i felt it all the way thru. one of my favorites. and kal penn showed how he can be a serious actor. good job! much respect.

i watched this movie because i was supposed to read the book for school but didnt, so i thought i wouldnt like it. but suprisingly, i really loved this movie! the whole theme of culture confusion was portrayed so well like I understood Gogul's thoughts. and i now have a greater insight of Indian culture, very interesting!
