I always had the feeling that they docked this scene because around the exact same time, there was a Babylon 5 episode that featured the exact same principle as that "identity overlay" thing.
The novelization had a whole sub-plot about the personality overlays and figuring who the spy was when the activation signal embedded in Thrakhath's "Gnashing of Teeth" transmission was discovered.
I was actually relieved about Hobbes "switching" sides. I mean ... seriously ... what kind of shitter betrays his own people and helps destroying his homeworld?!
i think hobbes did not switch sides on free will. he was a kind of sleeper and got activated when trakat (or what his name is) said "heart of the tiger" on the bridge. that worked like some kind of codeword. you can see the change in hobbes expression and how he seems to be confused shortly after
Yes, i had this in my PC version to. It was purchased for DOS, but I believe i picked it up after WC4 had come out, so it was probably some "best seller" "EA ORIGINS CLASSICS' type of release. It may have been different from the original release.
@Foxstab Thanks, Foxstab. That's a good guess.. However i definitely remembered the package i got only had WC3 in it. Your post made me go do some research, and i FINALLY found some box art that matches up with what i remember. I had the "ELECTRONIC ARTS PRESENTS CD-ROM CLASSICS GOLD EDITION" release of Wing Commander 3. Box claimed it was "For Windows95", but i definitely recall not having Win95 at that stage. I ran the game on DOS 5.0.
This scene certainly isn't in the DOS version. It might have been added for the Kilrathi Saga PC version, though. AFAIK, this scene was only available originally in the 3DO version of WC3.
This is moronic soap opera stuff. I always imagined that Hobbes defected because he saw no honor in what happened at Goddard. I imagined he defected back because Confed was planning to do the same thing to Kilrah - and seeing that neither side had honor, he chose to support his own species.
I agree with you there. I like to make an analogue something like this: what if a high-ranking German officer had defected to the Allies in WW2 and then found out that they were planning to end the war by dropping a nuclear bomb in Berlin? Would that person try to go back to warn his countrymen?
There is one problem in disposing of the sleeper agent explanation: then why did Hobbes spy on the closed meetings where Tolwyn explained the plan to blow up Kilrah. Still, there are ways around that.
i dont understand why this is a "lost scene" it was in my version of wc3 this is in your locker right after you kill hobbes and its there for like 2-3 missions after im sorry other versions didnt have it but it didnt make his betrayal any easier ... furry bastard
I wish they'd keep this in too to explain this as Hobbes was definitely a fan favorite. It definitely makes a lot of sense that his defection was due to a construct and he was forced to do it without even knowing, and Hobbes really was a true friend to Blair.
I must be in the wrong here cause I thought hobbes being a traitor made more sense and fitted the war enviroment better than being part of some experiment
Hobbes defects, along with his capital ship and several fighters, in Wing Commander 1: Secret Missions 2. The character meets him again in Wing Commander 2, and they become very good friends. Play WC2 and it's expansions, and this chapter will be a lot more satisfying.
So the only cat-man who is nice turned out to be evil deep inside? Aw man, an entire race which hates humanity and wishes for war - that's kinda scary, lol.
Actually, not all Kilrathi hated humans. Indeed, if you played WC1 and 2, you'd know of the Kilrathi on the planets Ghorah Khar, and Shar N'tanya, and another I can't quite remember. They were Kilrathi planets who rebelled agaisnt the Empire, and joined the Confederation. Presumably, they remained confederation planets even after Hobbes true-self was awakened.
you know I never realized this was cut till much later when I played the PC version. This is actually included in later cuts of the Play Station version.
THANK YOU! I have been waiting to see this on youtube forever! I felt so bad for Hobbes. He didn't even know who he was for 10+ years! Even despite his loyalty to the Empire, he still felt a need to explain his actions to Blair. He even seems to regret this is the way things have to be. Rest in peace, Hobbes.

Honestly, I like the idea that he did not agree with Confed Planet Killing methods...

I always thought his motive for defecting was convincing. Who wouldnt want to stop genocide of their own race?

It wasn't in any PC version. Neither DOS nor Kilrathi Saga, sadly.

I believe he specifically mentioned the Kilrathi's use of slaves as a reason why the Kilrathi empire was without honour.
And yes, I too, imagine that Hobbes turned back to Kilrah because Confed turned into very evil bastards.
