If the Vietnamese people could change the way they sell and serve street foods, it would be a country worth a visit for the world. Why am I say this? Because, everything else is great; except for the garbage being littered when people sell street foods. The government should do more to help and organize street food vendors, so that health hazard can be under control. The Vietnamese people need to pay more attention to keep the city and country they dearly love clean and clean!

I believe the purple sauce is called "mam nimh", and has already been mentioned is a fermented shrimp sauce. As with many Vietnamese sauces, mam nimh has a very pungent odor, but served properly, makes the dishes absolutely delicious. Without the many sauces, the food would not be nearly so good. I spent many years in Vietnam and love ALL of the food, and my Vietnamese friends will probably know what I mean. I hope to go back again very soon.
Wanna know how to make the smell less offensive and the taste less salty? Just add some water and squeeze lime or lemon juice into it! Trust me we Vietnamese don't just dip stuff into pure Fish sauce tee hee. Fish sauce is just tooooo salty on its own.

Most of the time strange food will upset your stomach, but keep going you will see the different. Did you try "Sau Rieng"?, at first i did not like it because of the smell, but my father force me to eat and now it is one of my favourite fruite

it's called "Bun dau mam tom", one of the most popular street food in Hanoi. Bu'n = vermicelli (it's rice noodle that has been boiled)

ma<'m to^m = shrimp sauce ( shrimp has been fermented in months- the smell is quite distinctive, someone say "stink" but someone got adicted)
