You can look it up, he died to save Luffy from Akainu's attack and about 10 episodes later his death proved to be the final straw for Luffy to realize that him and his crew need to become stronger to take on the new world. It also motivated Luffy to swear protection over everything, accepting that he was too weak to save his brother.
