See "Whomix" website for many versions of the Dr Who main theme. Delia Derbyshire's original uses sounds taped at different speeds for the notes. The pieces of tape were then stuck together one note at a time! She hated synths and when the BBC brought a Moog she left. In 1980 Peter Howell used a Yamaha CS80 and Arp odyessy III for his theme. (see Alchemists of sound, synthesizing starfields and BBC Corners on youtube for more on the Who theme)
The orginal is so much better than the semi digital controlled remake. I know very well that the originals drift (not as bad as an Oberheim but it is still bad). There is no lead synth in the world that can compete with a Mini Moog. Samplers bow down. Fm synthesis bow down. Semia Analgos bow down. POrtamento alone in an Analog can´´t be done with digital or samplers. Another analog worht remembering is the Oscar, who remembers that?
I agree the model D is the definitive analog monosynth and non-modular moog, but I dont think the voyager is a remake, hence the name voyager...plus its an amazing synth on its own merits. Great video thanks Retrosound.
Moog used to make one true polyphonic synthesizer: the Memorymoog. It was 6 voice in polyphony. The Polymoog was also a polyphonic synthesizer, but its architecture resembled more a transistor organ than a synthesizer
See that control panel? Exactly what level of polyphony do you want? Because, my brother, you would need that panel built n times for n-level polyphony. Now consider this: when this was made (1970 and on), a VCO had to be built from 13 transistors! One note in this is made from 3 VCO (39 transistors, $1 apiece). Want 4x polyphony? Build 12 VCO's (with separate rolloff, envelope, feedback, etc. controls) - you used 156 transistors only for the VCO circuitry, not to mention the rest of the unit.
Actually "MM/Model D" was released in "71". also the large parts count that u speak of was true, back in da day, however today that parts list would be a lot less,as well
"Bob" is gone. his company just like his "1st" company, that ran from "1964-1983", is owned by other people.and unlike his 1st company,"Bob" was the only engineer their who had synth design experience. no one at this "2nd" Moog company has that.they outsource that now. "Don Buchla" designed a piano tracking device for them.

mpresev 1 year ago
@mpresev
my Lintronics Minimoog has a LFO, Midi and more
retrosound72 1 year ago
@mpresev : Oscillator 3 can function as an LFO when the keyboard control is turned off, and the range is set to "Lo".
Poltr1 1 year ago
@mpresev There are three VCOs. One of them can be used as an LFO. Or you can use it to mod in the audio range for funky FM effects.

The moog D is not a synthesizer, it's a space shuttle for achieving other dimensions.

This is the real sound of Emerson Lake and Palmer. No Moog no ELP
Cool stuff, sad than nobody makes good music with them today, they are just pretty much pieces of collecting items.
Hopefully some of the new musicians will rediscover the moogs and make new good music.
Greetings

If you think nobody uses Moog synths anymore, you should check out Ayreon. It's analog heaven.
