Canon EOS 1100D video review

@WhatDigitalCamera would you recommend the Canon 1100D or the Nikon D3100 as a first DSLR? which one's better in terms of HD video capture because I've heard that the Nikon has a bad autofocus system in video mode even though it shoots at 1080p and the Canon is at 720p?

also, which lens would you recommend as an everyday walkabout lens?

holycrap..an older and cheaper Pentax kx beats this camera in all feature except for possibly battery (kx uses AA which has pros and cons) and canon has more lenses available today...but considering pentax has been using the same k-mount since the 70's, it probably has more lenses. im not a pentax fanboy i just like more value for the money...it's like canon is apple, nikon is windows..pentax is linux/ubuntu

I don't really think so.

The KX has a faster burst mode, but thats about it.

Image quality is basicly the same or very similar.

The stabelizer that canon uses on its lenses is better than the one the sensor shift mechanism the kx has.

You can't see the AF points on the kx's viewfinder and its AF is very slow.

It doesn't even have a focus assist lamp.

The Canon is better in all of these.

I bought myself a 1100D and it was the cheapest camera and for what i heard is the best entry level.

@Ciaokje definately, this guy missed out one pro and one con to the camera though, it actually has 1080p video recording, but all video files are uploaded onto your computer as .MOV files which is a problem because most computers or software will require you to convert these into .AVI files ect. Which is VERY time consuming.

@ELLo1997 If you have any family or friends who shoot with nikon or canon try to get a camera from the same company that they use like if your friend shoots canon then get the Rebel t3. Otherwise I'd just go to an electronic store like best buy and hold each camera to see which one feels best. Features are nice and all but that'll mean nothing if the camera feels crappy in the hands.

@bdrafilms The price has come down dramatically since this video was made. This is currently selling (with the 18-55mm kit lens) for around $600 in Australia, (Harvey Norman, a retail store in Oz, currently has it on special for $498). Any of the Canon EF or EF-S lenses works with this camera but the Canon fisheye lenses are a bit pricey so if you're looking at buying this camera with a Fisheye I'd recommend a different brand of lens to keep the price down. Perhaps a Sigma or Tamron.

Guys even though it's mono mic sounds decent ,slip the audio in audicity to get better sound and put it back to the video ,or just use a seperate audio recording device to capture stereo sound at PCM quality using a digital audio recorder, all in all this camera is awesome ;)

The quality is 'built-to-budget', but ok when you consider the features included.

With regard to the LCD, it is mainly used for camera information and photo review, not as a primary viewfinder (except when shooting video), so a high resolution is not required IMO.

As for the grip, if it were bigger, then others would say it was too big - find something that fits your hands...

As a beginner's DSLR, it fits the job admirably - if you want more, go out and spend more money!

I touched this camera in best buy.. What I don't like about this camera is its optical viewfinder, its screen, and the grip.. WHY? Because the optical viewfinder is to small for me the LCD screen is to small for a DSLR and the resolution is only 230,000 dots. And for las the grip is to small for my hands and the overall built quality is very cheap...

In Av, simply turn the control wheel; in Manual, hold down the Av button while turning the control wheel - it's the one to the top-right of the display, also used to erase photos.

@xear3d2009 I think Nikon is a bit cheaper, but that is not the point. It is like BMW or Audi. I never saw anyone switching from Canon to Nikon or other way around. Because if you owned a Canon before, you will know how to use the next Canon model. Nikon is something diffrent and you will have to learn new buttons again.

@xiProductionsLimited This camera would be good for your needs if you switch it to it's continuous shooting mode which allows you to capture 3 frames per second or sports mode.If buying from Ebay you might find it cheap otherwise buy a Canon EOS 1000D which you can buy brand new for exactly £300!
