Cat Stevens is the most perfect musician ever to play, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant are the most perfect entertainers ever to perform, and Extras is the most perfect show ever to air.
I normally would be against people bringing up what led them to a song, but Extras is just so good. I can't be angry at you guys. I can't be angry at anyone.
I can see how someone might think this sounds unfinished, but you're hearing the song out of context of the album. This really is an outro piece. And it's sort of a framing device, how he sings about the children playing, when the first song is 'Where Do the Children Play?'
i just brought this album, and think its amazing.
Can anyone recommend me and late 60's/early 70's British folk bands like Cat, Space Oddity Bowie and Fog on the Tyne Lindisfarne - bands in the same ball park???
If you liked this particular album then you might want to give Nick Drake a listen. He put out two albums before his untimely death that really captures this same type of essence. The first album is Pink Moon and the second one is titled Five Leaves Left.
an evangelical choir member could relate...this is Cat..filled withe spirit!!!! Thanks, I used to skip the song, now I find myself repeating it, just to hear the JOY ABOUND...if only in my pickup truck...
Some of the lyrics this guy created make me think that he must have been mad. At the same time, the words he chooses, combined with the simple and bittersweet sound of the music he puts them to, continue to draw out an emotional response, decades later. I still have no idea what he's talking about, but the line about children playing while sinners sinning still makes me happy or sad. To me, he is a bit of an alchemist, musically.
@eahenryii that's not madness, a quest for the truth, probably he was in some park and seen a family on a table where kids playing around while he is reading the paper with all the bad news from the middle east and Vietnam at the time, remember, he probably wrote this in late 60s and released 1970.
Wow, Thanks bl4ckk3nn3dy! When I get the time I'm gonna decipher that and practice, maybe get my friend to help me. I'm new to the piano (to any instrument in fact), just started about 4 months ago & never had any lessons, just learnt off the internet for free. I don't yet know chords etc. just individual keys... Lol sorry i'm so crap, hopefully soon I'll get a teacher and learn properly
Hi,hi, i was just strollin youtube and somehow came to this song. ( heard it along wile ago ) The number starts i'm instantly at eas feeling nature's breez. Then with the sound at full we get to the 47 seconds part and i jump from my seat because i didn't remember the intense harmonics "HAPPY DAYS" Damn that contrast was mindblowing. Its a shame i now remember it again.
I love this song. But the Video is... nah. In the german langugae we would say "neger vor hütte". Its just the words from the song visualised by random images without any central theme or design. Its just a direct translation without any interpretation. Please doint be offended.
People will be offended because you've expressed an opinion which shows original thinking rather than unquestioning uniformity. But I think you have a strong enough point, though I don't personally agree with it.
In one or another way I was going to expect this. Its ok then. I disliked the Video, others loved it. Negative Rating comprehendible received. Lesson learned.
Woah! no no no. There's like 12 interesting, articulate people on youtube and their all shutting up to make way for the sheeple! (somebody once used the phrase 'idiotwind' which is a fantastic little metaphore!)
Right I'm friend requesting you. Anybody out there who is sick of the zombies on youtube request me. Let's pull some intellectuals into our life boat.
I didn't thumb Indyaner down (once BTW) for expressing an original opinion. I did so because I strongly disagreed with it. We can respect the right for others to voice their opinions, if not the content in and of itself.
I think the literal stills add a sort of children's picture book quality to it, which nicely reflects the tone of the song and the 'Tea For the Tillerman' album cover. It's like an Early Learning book.
You wont believe how long i have been trying to work out the name of this song. I am so sure i heared it on the office and i was lay tonight and sang to myself ''wine for the woman who made the rain come'' typed that into goodle...found it...and now ithis is approximately the 30th time i have listened to it <3
So I'm really thinkin bout the songtext... Like someone said before the 'woman who made the rain come' is mother nature and the last part is about everyday life, as long as it is peaceful. So the tillermann is god or...? But why tea for him and steak for his son? Tillerman
Brilliant song. No wonder Ricky and Steven picked it for thier brilliant series. My mum always used to say.."2 brilliants don't make a dumb"... Well done Cat Stevens. Well done Ricky and Steve.
You can twist peoples words and those of the holy scriptures of all faiths to make your own twisted points but at the end of the day it is the way that a man lives that will be judged by God from whichever faith you may come from!!
Leave Cat Stevens/Yusuf alone. He is on record as having NEVER condoned the fatwah against Salmon Rushdie.
when are idiots such as Spadger131 going to realise that the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths all come from the same tree but are different branches!!!

thank you it just annoys me to no end when people comment on religion dont take me wrong having something to believe in is wonderful but it is not necessary to make arguments about beliefs we all grew up diffrently so yes we will have different opinions on things but youtube is not the place to argue these beliefs
I heard this song first at a musical interpretation of "Harold and Maude". They sang it at the end of the play. But how they sang it! Man, i was crying.
bherlin29, I have to agree-I played this thin little track over and over on vinyl record. I'm just sorry that Ca's concept of who the "sinners" are who sin while the children play has apparently changed. Being a radical Moslem now, as I've heard he's become, he must know of some of his fellows who blew up children receiving gifts from U.S. soldiers, and have strapped bombs on others. Such is fate of those who feel they can please God by their works; so glad I accepted Christ at age 20, in 1980.
Glad to have a reply, however listen to yourself. My comment is about a great singer who called for death of Rushdie, and would rather go to a REAL burning of same than a mere effigy burning (search you tube) and I did not call either he or you ignorant. In fact I have had very sincere Moslim boss at great job, who joins world religions (and myself, as a youth, when I got top 1/2 of 1 percent in PSAT, etc) in feeling that self effort, painful self-inflicted sacrifice, or intelligence pleases God
As for the Rushdie thing, watch Yusuf's Cafe. What he said was wrong, yes, it was a stupid thing to say. He's never apologised for it, and he should, but his vehement denial that he ever did say it to me shows awareness that it was a foolish thing to do. If there was ever a time he meant it, I believe that time has passed and who he was then isn't who he is now.
Cat Stevens is the most perfect musician ever to play, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant are the most perfect entertainers ever to perform, and Extras is the most perfect show ever to air.

But just as Bush and Pat Robertson aren't valid representatives of Christianity, neither are fundamentalist terrorist valid representatives of Islam.
Please open your mind and take just the smallest step to the left. Your world might become more complicated, but it will certainly be less ignorant.

And the Bible tells us to forgive.
