Anyone that says Lars is a good drummer by any standard is retard. Yes what Joey plays is fast but they are all complex off rhythms and deedles. Lars just fucking keeps beat with his feet not changing at all and throws in horribly framed on beat not exiting rock beats and call them solos.
Everyone always says joeys better because he can play really fast, but to me it sounds like a drum set rolling down a long staircase. Lars's drumming is more methodical, it sounds like every time the stick hits a drum or cymbal it has a purpose. Thats why I got to say Lars.
@Mammacool1 I wouldnt say he relies on it he does use it alot but i wouldnt say rely. I personally think Joey uses the double bass solely to get the rolls tight at least in the solo on this video. Ive tried doing rolls without the double bass (at his speed that is) an it just sounds sloppy. In Lars's solo i just heard more cymbals then anything else.
Lars is a great drummer but i have to say Joey smoked him on this one. Lars was relying mostly on cymbals as Joey was being very technical and moving all over the kit. Being a drummer i would have a harder time playing Joey's solo then Lars's. But Lars still kicks ass! Lol

Funny. When the question is Joey vs Lars: people find Lars the one with the technique and stuff, but if they'd compare Lars to someone like... Mike Mangini or James Sullivan (even though that would be unfair due to different styles of drumming) Lars would be the one without technique.

@jonazz48 all depends on what you are talking about. the now slipknot and the now metallica are just the same. none is heavier. but if youre talking about the 80s metallica then they are faster...not heavier. total different type of metal there dude. but if you are talking about the early 2000s slipknot then that slipknot is way heavier then metallica now. so cant argue that because they both went bitchy and got a little soft. slipknot did by a lot.

@chunks132 slipknot created alot of their music from rage and hate, powerful feelings that festered in these guys, and spilled out into their first couple albums. they were successful. life was good for them then, how do you draw inspiration from feelings your not feeling. sure compared to self-titled and iowa, vol.3 and AHIG are no where as aggressive, but they are a shit tonne more creative in every way.

@chunks132 i never said metallica wasn't creative, hell having as many albums as they do, they're bound to have a few masterpeices. pre the black album metallica was the shit. i dont really care if a bands sound changes either, i dont think # of band members means squat for creativity. look at dub trio, 3 guys, and imo, creatively dance circles around slipknot and metallica. are they as successful, not even close. IMO metallica and slipknot are among a dying breed of good metal.

Funny. When the question is Joey vs Lars: people find Lars the one with the technique and stuff, but if they'd compare Lars to someone like... Mike Mangini or James Sullivan (even though that would be unfair due to different styles of drumming) Lars would be the one without technique.
I actually find this a pretty close comparison, because their drum styles are both kind of random.

Tbh Joey is much better. People are saying that he only has speed, that's what you need when you drum for slipknot, if he was more of a tehnicque, slipknot wouldn't be much of a speed metal.
Respect for Lars he is awesome but Joey is better :) My oppinion.
