  • We're just going to stay here until we outnumber them!

  • This is priceless!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • the only yank i'd give ant time to

  • @rorybowskill We don't want your "ant time" anyway pal. P.S. If it weren't for our "yank" fathers and grandfathers, you'd be writing (and probably misspelling) in German.

  • Where was this Show, we saw this tour in Tacoma but I imagine he told the same story and the kids come out every night. It really was a good show

  • @dsmallwood2112

This was at the Guthrie Center. Johnny & Sarah Lee just pulled in after driving 14 hours from South Carolina and jumped onstage.

  • Thank you for these wonderful posts. I love them all!

  • I'm not American but this song makes me gladf they exist (a Limey).

  • woody, arlo, pete.....all of them = America

  • I enjoyed this song, This Land is My Land, and also Woody Guthrie's version . When I was direction Readers Theatre, I took information from Alice's Restaurant cover and made a reading from it. My students won every time they entered competionon. We were at Winona State University, Minnesota. I enjoyed his work. God bless you and his tallent.

  • Good God !!! There's just a bunch of hateful people out and about....we've loved Arlo ever since "Officer Pickle"

  • Almost worship Woody and Arlo. soooooo creative

  • You can almost smell the hippies.

  • @MrJohanasBilderberg I guess you and the other 8 would rather a song praising Bin LKaden

  • to johntucell I feel you, and to hcgirl13 I wish I could talk to Arlo too

  • to john tucell I feel that....and to hcgirl I wish Icould talk to Arlo too

  • I this does not bring tears to your eyes -- you're not human.

  • @Godlesspanther

    Couldn't express it better !

  • This song is a great reminder.

  • Arlos daddy was a hobo during the great depression and wrote some very prolific songs.

  • awesome, Arlo singing Woodys song :-D

  • Arlo is great

  • Once someone complained to Woody Guthrie that his songs were being plagiarized by another singer and Woody said "Aw, he ain't nothing. He just steals from me, but I steal from everybody."

  • best version I've heared, woody would be proud

  • Just love those kids. That was beautiful.

  • good video

  • It's so awesome to see so many of Wood Guthrie's descendants carrying on the tradition!

  • This should the the American National Athem

  • @UncleBob223

I agree with you! Not the war song we currently have.

  • ♥ ∞ love ∞ ♥ ~ ♥ ∞ trust ∞ ♥

  • what a great family, one can feel the love you have for each other. I was fortunate to see your show in houston recently.

    Love you!

  • Some of you just need to read Bound for Glory then, to get an Idea of who Woody Guthrie really is. Arlo is a great storyteller, just like his father, but in his own kind of way.

  • where did u find out that woody was a communist?

  • @WierdIguanaBoys try reading a book, or just ask pete seegar

  • @WierdIguanaBoys Thats actually pretty common knowledge. Communism really is not a bad thing. Its actually a great concept. The problem is people dont know how to use it correctly

  • @MrOutlawCountry It is a wonderful THEORY that unfortunately\y runs contrary to human nature. It will NEVDER work in practice.

  • @istdee There was only ever suggestion that he was communist but essentially he simply believed in equal rights for everyone. The word 'communist' is being taken out of context. It simply means that workers etc.. should have exactly the same access to land and economy as the rich.

  • Tell it, Arlo! The right-wingers don't own the country just because they wrap themselves in the flag. It's a nice safe place for them to hide for now. But oh one fine day....

  • stfu

  • @GayTexanCommunist

One day you're going to kill everyone you don't like ?

Is that what you're trying to imply ?

  • Wow, a Texan I like!

  • Love it, been playing my fiddle along with it all day!

  • i love Arlo, Woody would be proud of this, what a song, it should be the nationlal anthem instead of that war-celebrating piece of crap we have now

  • kimval34b: You don't know what you say you know.

  • Love it, if you had you're way we would be singing the old Soviet national. Love the CONSTITUTION> PROTECT THE FOUNDERS IDEA OF THE REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a fine tune celebrating our nation but to make such a comment against our national anthem shows what a simpleton you are.

  • stfu

  • Woody Guthrie's son. and this song was actually his fathers.

  • If this is THE general: Thank you for your service!! I am a fireman in the city of Cincinnati and I work with those who have had the privilege to be under your command. Truly a pleasure to fight fires with your soldiers. Makes my job as an officer more efficient and effective! My most earnest respect and admiration; from one line officer to another.

  • And I thank you for your service to this great Country and to her people also.

  • If thats Stormin Norm then Im the Easter Bunnys big brother, how stupid does one have to be to be a firefighter?

  • don't you just love people.

  • Arlo seems like the friendliest guy on earth go to one of his shows and meet your family!

  • Love it!

  • He always could tell a story.

  • wonderful you can not g et more folksy then this!!!

  • Check out Rolie Polie Guacamole's version of this song. It is an inspirational upbeat version!!!!!!!

  • Do you play music?

  • woody guthrie is my great great uncle and arlo is my great unlce :-) believe it or not.... its true though...... my last name is guthrie and everything! i don't talk to arlo though..... i wish i could :-(

  • I believe you, if you word it like that its too hard not to.

  • @hcgril13 You should try to make contact with Arlo, he won't be around for ever, you know. When you think of all the stuff he has in his head about Woody and about your ancestry, stuff that will be lost forever when he dies. Go for it.

  • @hcgril13 I hope it's not because he thinks he's too much of a bigshot to bother with family. I always liked him, now I wonder........

  • @hcgril13 my uncle is Jack Benny, my first cousin is Fat Albert and my momma is that fat chick Shirly who played on Whats Happenin' not bragging tho, you can ask my pops Paul McCartney!

  • @OllyJollyOrange what a small minded unhappy person you must be.

  • @hcgril13 I bow in awe and respect.

  • @hcgril13 Sounds like bullshit to me!

  • @hcgril13 you don't know how lucky you are :)

  • Those girls are too cute. Do you think they've heard that song once or twice?

  • das beste was mir in meinen leben je beschert wurde, das ist woody, arlo, pete und shara, vielen dank an die schnezeit, ich weiss nicht was ich ohne euch machen soll!!Dank für die schoene zeit.

  • das beste

  • More families should teach their children -0 at the age of your grandchildren - who Woody and Arlo are> Luv it!!!

  • Arlo is great.

  • i dont understand why they leave out the most important verse ...In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple

Near the relief office - I see my people

And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'

If this land's still made for you and me.

  • This song has never had more relevance than now. Listen to the words and remember your heritage

  • i couldn't agree more . the country has finally been taken back by the american people after 8 long divided years.

  • Dave, The song was in response to the song "God Bless America" which (Woodie) Guthrie saw as unrealistic. It's from the POV of the working man. The migrant workers in particular during the dust bowl.

  • Unless you're about 100 years old then no, you have no clue what you're talking about.

  • ah, this is fantastic, that's some video!! thanks for sharing!! :D this music just gets ya...

  • GODS PEOPLE

  • That is so wonderful! Thank you for posting it. Arlo is great as ever, and those little girls are just adorable!

  • this land was made for Chinese investors it seems.

  • exactly !!! this land was made for hedgefondsmanager , gangster , banker and politmafiosi........yeah this land is your land , but no my land !!!

  • this is awesome.

    utterly wonderful.

    thank you so much

  • Iv'e had herd the story in school

  • What a sweet video!

Getting me psyched. I am going to see Arlo in Newberry, SC next month. I have lost track of how many shows of his I have attended. No better way to spend and evening! The entire family is a national treasure. Hope to make it up to the 'Garbage Walk' one year.

    Take care.

  • the little kids singing on stage-fantastic!

  • beautiful and sweet. thanks for sharing. peace

  • an American classic

  • They have passed the talent down, I saw him on the tour and his daughter and Son in law were great too.

  • Tribute to a great songwriter n singer!!!!

  • In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;

By the relief office, I'd seen my people.

As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,

Is this land made for you and me.

    As I went walking, I saw a sign there;

And on the sign there, It said "no trespassing."]

But on the other side: it didn't say nothing!

That side was made for you and me.

  • you actually reversed it

As I was walkin' I saw a sign there

And that sign said no tress passin'

But on the other side it didn't say nothin!

Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city In the shadow of the steeple

Near the relief office I see my people

And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'

If this land's still made for you and me.

  • Woody saw everything. Things haven't changed, but his words and music still touch the soul.

  • Many thanks for mentioning these verses, which Woody, late in life, had Arlo learn so they wouldn't be lost (as they sadly so often are). Is there a recording on here of Arlo singing the song with these verses included?

  • @johntucell

In America, the average man can own that private property if he's willing to work hard and earn it.

  • @johntucell Yeah. The two verses you never hear anymore. {:-{/}

  • Man those little girls are so lucky to have a grandpa(or is it great grandpa?) like Arlo, he has got to be one of the greatest live story tellers this country has ever had. I can only imagine the amazing bedtime stories they got to listen to. I wish he was my grandpa. :p

I just pray he passes his amazing talents on to his descendents.

  • I remember this song in one of our school books. We talked about this in school. Woody was a wise man and so is his son. They speak from the heart.

  • your grandaughters are just to cute

  • You must be hare-brained to make such a comment. You could never touch the man, the emotion, or the meaning of this song.

  • THIS is music from the heart.

The story behind this is such a big subject, and it's wonderful.

    Woody Gunthrie....you rock.

  • Amen brother...............

  • an american classic that embodies the highest ideals of what so many hope for in our nation. may it some day come to fruition.

  • i will drink to that my freind

  • In the square of the city

In the shadow of the steeple

    Near the relief office

    These are my People

    And some are grumblin'

    And some are wonderin'

If this land's still made for you and me.

  • A green thumbs up for you. I wasn't able to click the icon, so maybe someone needed me to say specifically that these lyrics definately belong to the American National Anthem (unofficial) as I have known it this forty five years, and hope my children will see receive natinal recognition. as the FOLK national anthem of all the "rest of us".

  • Well, if you really want to get technical this land is the Cherokee's, Blackfoots, and all the other Native Americans. I agree with you on the corporations, though.

But, I think this song is implying that this land is everyone's, of every race and every nationality. I.E. you can't "own" the earth. Which is pretty much like the Native Americans believed.

  • thanks so much...love it...peace...m________

  • Simply awesome!

  • Yes I do. Because the southern half of my state was once part of Mexico, so how are we going to tell Mexicans they are "foreigners".

Why do you think YOU, a European, have more right to live in America than other North Americans?

Hungarians were brought here to work, like African slaves, Irish indentured servants, Chinese railroad workers. And now Indian computer programmers and Mexican workers. Only, the people of Mexico once owned this land, and have more right to it than you.

  • I am SO happy to see that Arlo appears to have eluded the Huntington's Disease that took his dad and so many family members. They say once a child in a family that has it gets through middle age without it, all their children will NOT get it and the thread is broken. YEA.....!!!!!! (I just finished reading "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein.)

  • my mom sang it to me, i sing it to my boys... i was a crying :)

  • It brought a tear to my eye & im not even a yank! but for the first time i wish i were.

  • This song always makes me cry its so beautiful.

  • I once read that Arlo's Ma & Pa were listening to Arlo play and sing when he was youngun, and his Ma said "listen to that boy, sounds terrible". His Pa says back at her "woman, I've been trying to sound like that my whole life"! ARLO...Bless ya brother, more than anyone, you are the closest thing to dear Woody walking this here beautiful planet.

  • Hey, why so greedy in not sharing embeded codes so we all can enjoy in what this music is all about and always has been to bring joy and life into all beings and "This land is your land, this land is my land" and is meant to be shared in UNITY.

  • im related to him, seriusly, i am, our last name is that, is he alive?

  • Your related to Arlo Guthrie, yet you have no idea if he's alive... I don't believe you, and shame on you. Shame, shame.

  • lol well idk is he alive?

  • Yes, he is very much alive and well. As a matter of fact he's touring right now. He'll be in touring internationally in a couple of weeks. Let's wish him a many more years of health and happiness. Peace.

  • jonasluvr he was alive 20 or so years ago hes ded tho i wish he wasnt

  • He looked alive when we went to his show last month. My wife is his 2nd cousin. She is Jack Guthrie's granddaughter.

  • im related to him, seriusly, i am, our last name is that, is he alive?

  • im related to him, seriusly, i am, our last name is that, is he alive?

  • I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Arlo after a concert and talking with him for an hour or so. He came out of the dressing room long after the show had ended and a simple hello/autograph turned into an extended conversation about anything and everything. He is a true American original...tremendous wit and a very genuine and down to earth person.

  • Hey,

I dont know if my comment posted, I've been having issues with my connection.

I wanted to thank you for posting this, its good to know that Arlo is still playing. I've wanted to meet him since I was a cub. My grandpa played with Woody a few times an went to CCC with Pete Seeger.

If Arlo is ever near Disneyland doing a concert, let me know. I'd love to come hear him play =)

my email is rainhopperroo at yahoo dot com

  • Ron Paul will return America to it's people. Arlo Guthrie officially endorsed Ron Paul. You can see this on Ron Paul's website. Ronpaul2008dotcom

  • Ron Paul will not return this country to the people. He is NOT for the workers.

  • masterphoenixca: Workers are not the only people in this country. Nor 'evil' corporations, though it sounds like what you're implying. No. There are people who don't work, who live off the land and don't want the government messin' around in their lives, who don't want Americans killing and being killed in unnecessary wars and who don't want us propping up foreign dictators. Would you deny those citizens - or any citizen - a voice?

  • I wish to deny no one a voice. For it is a government supposedly "of the people, by the people, and for the people."

  • agreed

  • This irresistible song - words by Woody Guthrie, music from an old Carter Family hymn - has legitimately become an American treasure. One has to listen to more than the first verse to realize that it is a protest song against injustice rather than a tribute to the perfection of America.

  • Is this song Woody Guthrie's artistic property? bit of an ironic question but in the UK there's these "comedians" 'Skinner and Baddiel' who have a show called 'it'll never work' and they use TLIYL as their signature music "it'll never work-it'll never work...etc."

  • agreeed

  • Some of our land was once Mexico.

  • Your ancestors were PRODUCTS OF EUGENICS JUST TO POPULATE AMERICA!!! CHECK THE DNA! ITS ALL A BIG JOKE!

  • Why is there SO much Animosity? We all live on one planet, and RESPECT towards all indivduals Should be our Ultimate Goal. We Must all work together...if not Planet of the Apes wasn't too far off. PEACE!

  • Man - you're such an idiot I can't respond with your depth of stupidity. What books do you read (assuming

    you can read)?

  • One must be totally stupid to even think that this song is all about illegal immigration. My friend you represent the America non Americans Hate.

And your ancestors where illegal invaders that took the indian lands. The only difference is you where victorious. Leave justice out of it.

  • You are a sad person. This song is most certainly not a parody It was and is a rallying cry to all people to remind them that they all own the nation in common not just the company men and government thugs.

Arlo a slave? For doing what he wanted to do and enrichenig the lives of many people his entire life?

    again...you are a sad person.

  • The America non-Americans Love.

I wish you get your land back someday.

  • Thank you for the very nice thoughts that show understanding for us. Thank you.

  • Love

  • Maybe this need to be our new national anthem.

  • definitly

  • I agree.

  • kid rock sux... and why do u always capitalize everything

  • He's looking for the cap locks.

  • When you think about it, don't you think it would be a better national anthem than AND THE ROCKET'S RED GLARE!!!!

  • especially since our rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air are not in our land, but way over there...

  • haha exactly

  • lucky enough to hear him sing this. always part of my psyche.

there is a spanish translation. with some new lyrics. find it, and listen to it.

  • yes

  • LOVE Woody and Arlo

  • This is America!Thanks!

  • is this woodys real son ???

  • yep

  • Don't know if you got your answer, but arlo is woodies real son, i think born in NY but I know spent enough time in Stockbridge MA to call it home. You should really listen to the "Alice's Restaurant massacree" song. a gem of a story.

  • Depends. If Willy's been dead for 70(?) years, then copy-write laws don't apply anymore, and therefore anyone who wants to change it can.

  • <.< that sucks I totally commented the wrong comment. XD lol at me

  • Depends on if the copyrights were assigned to his estate or a corporation to be managed by the family for years to come....like Elvis....only better....

  • Just singing songs like these keeps them as alive as the day they were written.

  • i was there WOO!!!!

  • Blessings to your whole family, and greetings from "this land is my land", Australia.
