Hey 11 year old Janet can really polka! What fun all of this. There is no pretentiousness in the people on the show... it is just a family having fun , enjoying each other and sharing it all with us. It is so refreshing in so many ways.
Hello from Alberta Canada ! l am lucky enough to still own two LP records by Harold Loeffelmacher and his terrific musical group. Thanks for presenting this very nice video. After seeing this l will now have to start up my turntable and again listen to Harold's recordings. Thanks Again !
I always enjoyed having Harold come up to the studio when I was playing Old Tyme on Sun afternoons on KNUJ! Harold was nevr at a loss for words! He was known as the "Bard of the Bass Horn! RIP Harold.
I will hopefully be going to New Ulm in a Few months to attend Martin Luther College, the pastor/ teacher training school for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Syond. I plan to be a pastor. I have been doing some research on the town to get aquainted with it and I came across this band. they sound good
I might suggest that Marcus Rojas is the current Jimi Hendrix of the Tuba - check this Youtube: 8iMgVw8U0Vc - Marcus even plays several Hendrix songs (but not on video that I can find.)
What a character Harold was! An endless promoter of Polka throughout the country. Gotta hand it to him, he came from very meager beginnings. Lots of humorous stories in New Ulm about him...
AWESOME SOUNDS! The Lawrence Welk Band played for my parents Wedding Dance and Harold Loeffelmacher and the 6 Fat Dutchmen (all 11 of them) played for ours 46 years ago at the Vahalla Ballroomnear Tracy and Slayton Minnesota.
My Grandfather was the drummer boy in the Six Fat Dutchmen. His name was Russell Rockvam. He loved playing with this band! After Grandpa's drummer years ended, he was a piano tuner in the New Ulm, MN area for many years until his death in 1992. Rest in Peace Grandpa Rockvam! May polka music live on forever!
My grandfatherjust loved the Six Fat Dutchmen. My grandmother also served Lawrence Welk when he and his band would pass throught Walnut Grove Minnesota when they were traveling. She was the only one working at the soda fountain who was not intimadated by Mr. Welk.
Harold and the Six Fat Dutchmen were a riot. I met him a few times; he and my Dad, Bobby Mills, were good friends. I remember seeing the band once in Grand Island, Nebraska when they were carrying a suitcase-style Thomas organ as part of the rhythm section. On that gig, only the oboe sound on the lower keyboard worked.
I was born and raised in New Ulm, MN. What a treat to see this video of one of the truly great artists of "Old Time Music." I remember seeing him every year in the audience at New Ulm's Heritagefest Days back in the 70's and early 80's. My dad, who is still living at 87 years old knew Harold very very very well. Thanks for this piece of history!
A guy named Klaus fixed my accordion in New Ulm, I live about 2 hrs from there. He was from that generation of fantastic players, I hope to reach that level some day.
"The Six Fat Dutchmen, all 11 of them" -- HAHAHA. This could be a video response to v=0WCMzRLov58 , in which Lawrence claims he has never heard of the Clarinet Polka being played on the tuba before. :-) A nice dance with Janet Lennon.
