Up until, say, 1984 the USA didn't send their very best basketball players to the Olympics - obviously their best players went professional, and the Olymppics still disqualified officially professional sports persons. Sometimes even their top flight college players didn't want the Olympics when the Olympics was coming arpund. It was considered a dick-pot chore which buggered with their professional drafting into the NBA. It was the Davis Cup of basketball in the USA.
even if russia won fair and square by a point, It wouldnt have said much as the best college player Bill Walton was not on the squad, the best player their was ejected before halftime, the bad coaching on the last few plays not to mention kids who only played two weeks together playing an adult soviet = pro team. Plus on their own continent so even a controversy free 51 50 soviet win with all the adversity of that 72 usa team so basically even at that the americans beat themselves..
When Doug Collins was undercut going to the basket, that should have been called a flagrant foul, USA 2 free throws and the ball out of bounds...but the USA should have had Burleson guarding the inbounder, to discourage the long pass. Also have 1 defender in front of the guy and one behind the other. No way that guy should have been able to catch that pass!
William R. Jones was also part of the blame, he really had no right to tell the officials to reset the clock, but ruled FIBA with an iron hand. I was only 12 years old at the time watching this with my brothers, and it still pisses me off to this day, the sad thing about it too was that Hank Iba was pickpocketed of $360 bucks. I will say to this very day, Mr. Jones favored the commmunists, and if anyone wants to dispute this with me COME ON AND TRY!!!!!
The most ridiculous officiating that I've ever seen in my life. To allow the Russians to in bound the ball after they called a time out with NO timeouts left was ridiculous. But then to allow them a second time to was lunacy. Absolutely fixed!
Try as I might, I cannot find this on any of the 'Top 10 funniest premature celebrations' videos posted by Americans all over Youtube. It should surely be number one!

Search "Basketball_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics" at Wikipedia for some fascinating reading about the misunderstanding and mess between the coaches, referees, scorer's table and FIBA officials.
At least it didn't go to a fourth inbounds play as a result of a Soviet supporter running onto the court and knocking over the American guards, while an American fan rips out a chair and throws it at the hoop to stop the Soviets scoring!
Russans win like this all their lives..... You saw yesterday what happend against MACEDONIA on EuroBasket..... They are lucky bastards.... Greetings from Macedonia :)
Game is over, if the referee calls itßs over. Stop complaining, block that shot. And if it starts over again, block that shot, too. Till the ref is tired of blowing his whistle.
This bitterness from the USA against Russia nearly brought the end of the world. They were beaten the same way they beat Russia at Ice Hockey in 1980. But the US being the US, it has to be more than that.
@agialidis No timeouts were permitted once the ball was in Collins' hands for that second foul shot under 1972 rules. It's still controversial whether Kondrashin called a timeout when he says, and he failed his duty to ensure one of the on-court officials knew it. The on-court officials alone could grant a timeout, and were unable to do so when they were aware of the request.
LMAO that black guy got fuckin posterized at the end. russia doesnt even give a shit about basketball, thats the funny thing and they ended up winning.
Hey fuckhead, first off he didn't get posterized.
second russia clearly did give "a shit" about basketball, they played over 400 games together and it was against the US, (maybe you should Wikipedia "Cold War")
And if you call that "winning," clearly you've never won in your life.
@Natehuki91 oh wow, they played a lot of games, that must mean it's popular. MLS plays a lot of games, so in your brain soccer is popular in the US??? lol u stupid
@Fantomas24ARM Yea by rules my ass i am not from USA but after that controversial timeout and when the game finished by the RULES and USA won by the RULES the game got extended 3 secs some new rules eh?Lame cheat victory by USSR true winners are USA here.
@metalslugxBTB they didnt cheat, u faggot! they've defeated the US team two or three times in Olympics history. And if u think it wasn't fair in THIS game, then, anyway, it couldn't be a cheat, it was a mistake made by the referees. And LOL @ the 'free world'

@jonas96313 Ok. Russia's cool and the USA too. Lithuania, however, is irrelevant. You guys used to own like half of Eastern Europe. Now you're confined to the Baltic.
@Fantomas24ARM No, you didn't win by the rules. Both the Brazilian on-court official, Renato Righetto, and the game's official scorekeeper say: "under FIBA rules, the US won."
@coryg5 they weren't Russians, they were Soviets, mostly Lituanians, Ukranians and some Russians. And the missiles in Cuba, were dismantled with the agreement (surprise! the USA honored the deal) of dismantling some USA missiles stationed in Turkey. Keep watching fox news sweetie.
hey soviets.....even though you cheated your way to a gold medal here..... what happened in 1980 at lake placid? oh yeah... the USA fucking owned and beat you at your own game. USA ALL THE WAY!

To me the 2nd re-try wasn't honorable. But it was 38+ years ago, and it is time to move on. Just wanted to give my side of the story is all.
@fuzyjustin if you think the referees in this game made the correct call, you don't know what you're talking about and you need to shut the fuck up immediately
@capricornusrus There is no timeout left for Russian. the 3 seconds were before the 2 free throws. The refs should have conclude the games after the first inbounds. why do they inbounds a second time when there is no timeout left? Why do Jones intervene in the game, when he has not right? There are mistakes by the refs, Jones (who is IOC basketball leader) but not a ref, the russian coaches. There are to many evidences of wrong calls over simple rules.
@catrachocolo That's a lame argument, and you know it. The US protest had strong legal basis, as William Jones over-ruled the on-court officials when he had no authority to do anything at all. THAT's the bottom line. Game was over. Btw, the game's not even official- Rhigetto never signed the scorebook.
Wikipedia actually gives a very good explanation of what happened during the end of the game.
But fixed game or not: The US ultimately lost because two of their players weren't able to guard one Soviet player. So if you want to blame someone, blame those two. If they guard correctly, the soviets don't score, the US wins, despite the alleged fixing. It is as simple as that.
@catrachocolo, Incorrect. If the US players had guarded correctly then there would have been another magic 3 seconds added, and so on, until eventually the time would run out with the USSR winning.
all i have to say is brilliant match ! Nowdays the USA basketball team does not represent USA, it represents freaking Africa !. Americans are that useless that they hire others do the the hard work for them.
LOL! The US should have had more black guys on that team, guys who played this game on the streets straight out of the womb, but instead they preferred players who looked "lily-American" instead.
@Bardolph1978 They had the players to play the "street game" but they chose to play the international style game. This was because they had a FOSSIL for a coach - Hank Iba - who would not let them run and gun. He was from the mid-West and played that style of game. The Soviets actually outplayed the USA for almost three quarters but the USA changed styles and came back. Still they stole the game from us in the end.
Wow, that's some rigged shit if I ever saw it. Only a completely brainwashed zombie drone Russian could ever think they actually earned that medal, rofl. If that happens in the United States, those officials get skinned alive then boiled in a vat of acid.
In basketball the clock doesn't start until the inbound ball is touched. Still, this game was over and US boys won it, period. As a kid watching this I felt outraged that our boys didn't get the Gold. But they did, in their souls.
This was the biggest travesty in the history of sports. I remember it well. It made me sick to watch it. They did not even try to hide the bias. The refs lost control of the game at the end. It was that simple. Officials from OFF THE COURT handed the game to the Soviets. They just decided that the USA had "owned" Olympic Basketball long enough. The silver medals are still there, and they will NEVER be accepted by the USA.
@tbdonnelly67 they really should not accept it. it even made me sick of watching it, up to this day. olympic game fixing at it's best and nobody does it better than the team in color red.
@bonzie1645 I have heard that many of that team have provisions in their WILLS that no future offspring can accept those silver medals on their behalf. Now THAT is some serious bitterness and I don't blame them. I remember being on my hands and knees screaming at the TV and pounding my fists on the floor when that asshole hit the last layup after knocking two USA players to the floor.
@tbdonnelly67 yes it's true. there's one member of that team died already and he put in his will that no one in his family including his future offsprings should accept those silver medal and the rest of his teammates thought it was a good idea to include in their wills not to allow teir family or future offsprings accept the silver medal. i know it's some serious bitterness but you would rather take a lesser medal in a glorious defeat not some screw job or very poor officiating.
First off the whole decision about three extra minutes were completely wrong, and the referee can't change his decision after the end game buzzer goes off. Secondly, Soviet last play lasted a good 4 seconds from the pass 'til the shot was made. A historical video in the world of sports, thanks for the upload :)
@BagOfFun I never understood that 3 seconds thing. 1st there were 3 seconds left. Ok. USSR made their play, didn't score, game over. WHY another 3 seconds, AFTER games end??? WTF? The ref was making up new rules as the game progressed. Was he going to keep adding time until the USSR finally scored/won? If that didn't work, what next? Start taking America players off the court? Maybe move USSR players until finally there is 1 minute left, no USA players & USSR right under the basket.
@gjc82071 Firstly, there was a time out request by the USSR coach, which wasn't noticed by the main referee. at second time - the final buzz went too quickly (there are no 3 seconds passing, hardly 1, count yourself) At third, USA players thought that they already winners, and no miracle can happen. But it somehow did )
The only thing which bothers me, third time player steps to line when throwing the ball in.
@polyrider81 I'm not an international basketball rules expert... but its a technical foul to call a time out when you have none left as was the case here. So the US would have got a freethrow(and possesion? depending on the rules at that time) if the refs had seen the coach calling a time out. If they did not see a time out being called why did they stop the play at half court and put 3 seconds back without calling an infraction?
@MrLEXX100 We're allies, man. Settle down. And, as a guy who doesn't have any stake in basketball for either team, I'll say the US got hosed. Were those refs ever caught for taking bribes?
@MrLEXX100 hahahahaha, shut the hell up. America wins the olympics every year. The only way you can beat us is like you did in the video. BY CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your players couldn't even dribble the ball without look straight down at it. How the hell were they supposed to beat the US??? Oh yeah, by cheating.
@GassNaut Well technically there is no winner to the olympics, and even so, so what? We still come in the top 3-5 every year. The only way your fucked up country won is by having two extra chances. They probably would have kept having more if it had come down to it.
A LONG PASS COULD HAVE GOTTEN 2 SECONDS ! ! ! AND THE RECIEVER DID NOT MAKE A VERY QUICK SHOT SO IT MUST HAVE TAKEN THEM 4-5 seconds to make that play. But,I think the timekeeper made himself the time-KEEPER and DESPERATELY cause USA's first loss in a olympic game. But,past is past.USA still has the most gold medals in basketball championship.
To this day...the US Players should line up and Punch Bill Walton in the Mouth one at a time. He was the best player they could line up...but instead of representing his country...he decided that touring with the Grateful Dead and getting high all summer was more important. He would have made the US unbeatable...and to this day...have no respect for that unpatriotic and useless excuse of an American.
WTF? He doesn't have to participate in the Olympics. It's a choice...there are countless NBA players who don't partake in the games. Seriously...what the fuck is wrong with you?
dirty trick by the timekeeper to make the buzzer sound at 2:50 while the FT is being shot.
the first go around, the ball is inbounded and the guy dribbles for around 2 seconds. True enough, the clock shows 1 second left on the clock after the ref stops play. then of course, play resets twice more for some reason. that makes sense :|
I'm not a staunch supporter of either country but the Sport itself.
My neutral standpoint after viewing the game is very simple. Any team who's placed on the losing end will surely fell the same way as the Americans did, even if it were the Russians.
There has clearly been confusions (especially from the officials) during the end part. Even people who do not know anything from the sport will definitely see those and will say something was wrong...an elementary mistake at a high level stage.
how the hell does 3 seconds keep getting added this makes no sense the americans got screwed and im not just saying it because im american i would have said the russians got screwed if it was the other way around but it isn't and usa should have won that game but the past is the past
Up until, say, 1984 the USA didn't send their very best basketball players to the Olympics - obviously their best players went professional, and the Olymppics still disqualified officially professional sports persons. @fuzyjustin if you think the referees in this game made the correct call, you don't know what you're talking about and you need to shut the fuck up immediately
macarion 9 months ago
@macarion Oh nvm I thought you were arguing with the countdown comment, not the timeout, ya THAT was a stupid call.
fuzyjustin 9 months ago
@fuzyjustin no time outs and he calls a time out thats not how anyone plays basketball
PantsandPanda 9 months ago
@capricornusrus There is no timeout left for Russian. the 3 seconds were before the 2 free throws. The refs should have conclude the games after the first inbounds. why do they inbounds a second time when there is no timeout left? Why do Jones intervene in the game, when he has not right? There are mistakes by the refs, Jones (who is IOC basketball leader) but not a ref, the russian coaches. There are to many evidences of wrong calls over simple rules.

@sportsoracle hence the bullshit. the first do-over was legitimate, but i have no idea why they got another chance.
tehzayay 10 months ago
@catrachocolo That's a lame argument, and you know it. The US protest had strong legal basis, as William Jones over-ruled the on-court officials when he had no authority to do anything at all. THAT's the bottom line. Game was over. Btw, the game's not even official- Rhigetto never signed the scorebook.
smartalek65 11 months ago
Wikipedia actually gives a very good explanation of what happened during the end of the game.
But fixed game or not: The US ultimately lost because two of their players weren't able to guard one Soviet player. So if you want to blame someone, blame those two. If they guard correctly, the soviets don't score, the US wins, despite the alleged fixing. It is as simple as that.
catrachocolo 11 months ago 6
@catrachocolo, Incorrect. If the US players had guarded correctly then there would have been another magic 3 seconds added, and so on, until eventually the time would run out with the USSR winning.

all i have to say is brilliant match ! Nowdays the USA basketball team does not represent USA, it represents freaking Africa !. Americans are that useless that they hire others do the the hard work for them.

This was crap! Refs threw this game clearly! We will never forget this! Atleast I won't!

LOL! The US should have had more black guys on that team, guys who played this game on the streets straight out of the womb, but instead they preferred players who looked "lily-American" instead.
Can't have your cake and eat it too.
Bardolph1978 1 year ago

BULLSHIT
nyjaj23 1 year ago
This was the biggest travesty in the history of sports. I remember it well. It made me sick to watch it. They did not even try to hide the bias. The refs lost control of the game at the end. It was that simple. Officials from OFF THE COURT handed the game to the Soviets. They just decided that the USA had "owned" Olympic Basketball long enough. The silver medals are still there, and they will NEVER be accepted by the USA.
tbdonnelly67 1 year ago
@tbdonnelly67 they really should not accept it. it even made me sick of watching it, up to this day. olympic game fixing at it's best and nobody does it better than the team in color red.
bonzie1645 11 months ago
@bonzie1645 I have heard that many of that team have provisions in their WILLS that no future offspring can accept those silver medals on their behalf. Now THAT is some serious bitterness and I don't blame them. I remember being on my hands and knees screaming at the TV and pounding my fists on the floor when that asshole hit the last layup after knocking two USA players to the floor.
tbdonnelly67 11 months ago
@tbdonnelly67 yes it's true. there's one member of that team died already and he put in his will that no one in his family including his future offsprings should accept those silver medal and the rest of his teammates thought it was a good idea to include in their wills not to allow teir family or future offsprings accept the silver medal. i know it's some serious bitterness but you would rather take a lesser medal in a glorious defeat not some screw job or very poor officiating.
bonzie1645 11 months ago
First off the whole decision about three extra minutes were completely wrong, and the referee can't change his decision after the end game buzzer goes off. Secondly, Soviet last play lasted a good 4 seconds from the pass 'til the shot was made. A historical video in the world of sports, thanks for the upload :)
BagOfFun 1 year ago
@BagOfFun I never understood that 3 seconds thing. 1st there were 3 seconds left. Ok. USSR made their play, didn't score, game over. WHY another 3 seconds, AFTER games end??? WTF? The ref was making up new rules as the game progressed. Was he going to keep adding time until the USSR finally scored/won? If that didn't work, what next? Start taking America players off the court? Maybe move USSR players until finally there is 1 minute left, no USA players & USSR right under the basket.
gjc82071 1 year ago
@gjc82071 Firstly, there was a time out request by the USSR coach, which wasn't noticed by the main referee. at second time - the final buzz went too quickly (there are no 3 seconds passing, hardly 1, count yourself) At third, USA players thought that they already winners, and no miracle can happen. But it somehow did )
The only thing which bothers me, third time player steps to line when throwing the ball in.
polyrider81 1 year ago
@polyrider81 I'm not an international basketball rules expert... but its a technical foul to call a time out when you have none left as was the case here. So the US would have got a freethrow(and possesion? depending on the rules at that time) if the refs had seen the coach calling a time out. If they did not see a time out being called why did they stop the play at half court and put 3 seconds back without calling an infraction?

@MrLEXX100 We're allies, man. Settle down. And, as a guy who doesn't have any stake in basketball for either team, I'll say the US got hosed. Were those refs ever caught for taking bribes?
subpoprec 1 year ago
@MrLEXX100 hahahahaha, shut the hell up. America wins the olympics every year. The only way you can beat us is like you did in the video. BY CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your players couldn't even dribble the ball without look straight down at it. How the hell were they supposed to beat the US??? Oh yeah, by cheating.
WarEagleAuburn89 1 year ago
@WarEagleAuburn89 US didnt win the last 4 olympic games...
GassNaut 1 year ago
@GassNaut Well technically there is no winner to the olympics, and even so, so what? We still come in the top 3-5 every year. The only way your fucked up country won is by having two extra chances. They probably would have kept having more if it had come down to it.
WarEagleAuburn89 1 year ago
@WarEagleAuburn89 dont be jalous that you lost) its ok)
GassNaut 1 year ago

He would have made the US unbeatable...and to this day...have no respect for that unpatriotic and useless excuse of an American.

dirty trick by the timekeeper to make the buzzer sound at 2:50 while the FT is being shot.
the first go around, the ball is inbounded and the guy dribbles for around 2 seconds. True enough, the clock shows 1 second left on the clock after the ref stops play. then of course, play resets twice more for some reason. that makes sense :|
this is the epitome of an asterisk win.

@All
I'm not a staunch supporter of either country but the Sport itself.
