  • Eno and Lanois on that stage instead of in the audience was just THE business. That's what they were: a six-piece band. They all equally deserved this recognition. Never have I seen this happen, before or since. Producers truly on the same level of respect as the band, coming from the band. The whole U2 thing is just very, very, very special...

  • I say The Joshua Tree made them one of the best of that era, but firing out Achtung Baby 4 years later secured them a top spot in music forever.

  • 0:44 lol Diana Ross doesn't look or sound that thrilled to read that Bad isn't the winner... her baby lost :'(

  • What a great year, Sign O The Times, Bad, Joshua Tree, Whitney, & Diana Ross presenting.. sigh i may have been born in 1990. But i can tell this was an AMAZING night

  • Arguably the 5 best albums of the 80's decade not just that year, so all the more credit to U2 for winning.

  • One of the greatest albums of all time. And yes, it's easily better than Bad.

  • witty motherfucker

  • MJ's bad was also there (one of his best) still U2 won.... The best thing that came out of Ireland ever ( believe me.....I am not being sarcastic)....

  • stand up for u2

  • If there ever could have been a 3 way tie "album of the year", that was the year!!

  • Michael or Prince should of won. Oh well.

  • @QuintonB13 michael or prince throw away pop music u mean... joshua tree songs are about life one of the greatest albums off all time

  • @imedi Sign O The Times is also one of the greatest albums of all time ;). So is Bad.

  • @QuintonB13 i have all 3 albums but the only one of the 3 not gathering dust now is the joshua tree why... because the songs on it are timeless.. dont get me wrong great songs on the other albums too but joshua tree speaks to me like no other album has before or after........jackson will go into the history books as one of the great entertanors but u2 will be like the beatles know n among the greatest song writers

  • @imedi Yes, it is a great album, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. u2 is great, but they will not go down in history as the Beatles. No one will. That's just impossible. You are right, Michael's Bad is a bit dated, but SOTT has to be one of the most diverse albums I've ever heard in my entire life.

  • @QuintonB13 at the end of the day its down to taste there are many people around who hate u2 beatles and jackson so its all about personal opinion. love the beatles.. but i do think people who think they are untouchable.. thats maybe taking it a bit far. but noone can take it away from them that they led the way for others to follow

  • @imedi throw away pop music? Listen to "I could never take the place of your man", "sign of the times" and "adore" and then come back. Those are real life issues too. Not to mention the incredible diversity.

  • he always knows what to speak

  • wow, those are all great albums. but joshua tree is just amazing

  • They kicked Michaels ass! Thank God.

  • Bono... I love you !

    U2 is the BEST !!!

  • wow that's some serious competition

  • The Joshua Tree album was and is a masterpiece. It has been U2 trying to reach that place ever since. A moment time stood still, glad i was there to see them live when they were so powerful.

  • is one of the best albums of the history

  • the music world needs another joshua tree.

  • @recobalegend20 OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!! NO MORE BIEBER.

  • look bono is the frontman of the worlds greatest band he is down to earth but you need to have quite a big ego plus hees done more good things than probably musician U2 are more than a band !!!

  • Loved the speech, so I'm not sure why all the negativity on here.

  • How odd that he didn't mention the worst atrocities in history, that is, the slaughter of innocents now up to tens of millions upon tens of millions of infants.

  • that's so not true man.. if you are in the band like u2, one of the greatest, you must kinda act like a rockstar, don't ya think?but they really aren't like that!

  • It is true. Bono even knows it. He constantly makes references to how arrogant and egotistcal he is. I guess ebough people have told him he is full of himself that he feels he needs to make fun of it to counteract his arrogance.

Bono's arrogance has escalated ever since they got real big with ZooTV. Unfortunately, their music has gone down while their fame has gone up.

  • Look, even if Bono did make a big show out of donating his money you people would only slag him off more for being a charity show-off. Bono DOES donate his own money, but he does it off the record.

  • You Bono-haters act like donating money is the most important thing in the world. You stupid fuck, he could give his entire fortune and it wouldn't make as much difference as the campaigning he's done for debt relief and AIDS infrastructure creation. So please, stop opening your mouth about socio-political issues that are clearly too complex for your pathetic brain to comprehend.

  • @kellykinsel Where's the proof? Show me some conclusive statistics and we'll talk. Btw, RED is not a charity, it's a social enterprise. Or are you too dumb to know the difference?

  • Bono's Red charity has 'failed'

Bono & Co. Spend up to $100 Million on Marketing, Incur Watchdogs' Wrath

"So you'd expect the money raised to be, well, big, right? Maybe $50 million, or even $100 million.

Try again: The tally raised worldwide is $18 million. "

    Google

    bono red campaign loses millions

  • By the way, Bono used to be my hero! And I think when he is in top form no one is better. However, I am not blind to the fact he is an azzhole who thinks he is better than you and me.

anyone who acts so hypocritical like he does should keep their mouth shut about preaching to others

  • nah i dnt think so yeah he might have a huge ego but thats bono accept it !! hees a good guy he shows respect where it is due !!

  • that's probably among the best set of nominees for Album of the Year. There is U2's the Joshua Tree, Prince's "Sign o' the Times", Michael Jackson's "Bad", Whitney Houston, etc.....Now it's like Black-eyed Peas....WTF?

  • agree, and appetite for destruction by GNR is not even mention.

  • LOL BEP BETTER NOT BE NOMINATED LOL . But you're right all albums were good!

  • does someone can tell me did they perform ''without you'' at this grammy awards????

  • I think the reason they have been winning so many Grammys the past decade is because they didn't win much in the 80's and 90's which were their best albums.

  • I'd like to know what Bono can't do. Even if U2 hadn't won, everybody already knows and knew that they're a gaggle of winners.

  • Im still shocked that they didn't win for Achtung Baby. That to me is their greastest album.

  • yeah that was a great album so was zoopria amazing.Have you seen them on tour recentley?? im going september the 17 th in toronto omg going to be sooo good

  • U2 are THE BEST XXXX

  • greetings from germany

  • in 1988 i was 12... u2 was the sound of my childhood and its still the sound of my live and it will be the sound of my whole live.. u2 are the best musicians in the world .. i love them really!

  • i agree are you seeing them on tour? the 360 tour? i am toronto sept the 17th woweee i just love this band the best the best

  • Thats cool, im seeing them to at toronto and I believe at that date lol My friend has my ticket.

  • THIS IS THE 1988 grammys not 1987

  • great speech bonny!

  • I LOVE U2 My best friend in high school rocked this album

  • their the best band in the world

  • strong year, U2 deserved to win

  • joshua tree and sign o the times were the best albums of 1987.

  • lawlz

  • Album of the year ?? Hell no ! ALBUM OF MY LIFE !!!

  • u2 + brian eno = brilliance... xD

  • Listen to those nominees. All fucking legends.

  • il peut pas s'empecher de faire des blagues ce p'tit bono! :)...quel amour!!! <333

  • The passage of time has proven that U2, Brian Eno, and Daniel Lanois were the rightful winners!

  • Bono is on Uppers

  • Music at its best, Fashion at its worst, but U2 cool as ever!

  • the greatest album ever!

  • u2 kicks fucking ass! what ya'll talkin'about!

  • MJs career gone down the toilet , nobody is interested in him anymore, always that dark question hanging over his head did he or didnt he? hasnt had a decent record since Bad,Whitneys career gone up her nose thanks to BB hasnt had a decent record since this one ,U2 biggest band in the world since this record have had many peaks since then Including Achtung baby ,ALTYCLB,HTDAAB,All huge brilliant records which won them many millions more fans and won them more grammys than any other band.

  • MJ AND U2 BEST

  • hey michael try suckn a man's cock for a change. leave the boy's alone. u2 owns you.

  • Omigod! They won! They won!

  • woah! michael jackson's already had some work done on his face, eh?

  • joshua tree was and is one of the greatest albums of all time. it was true songwriting and rock, not 'dancing pop' like whitney and michael. it's u2's finest work and proves that they are beyond great. while michael and whitney may have defied the 80s, U2 lasted beyond it. this album proved at this time that it's possible to write songs not just about love and chicks, but about life, faith, and the struggles of one's self.

  • Yea, but where are they now?? Michaels still in the headlines but for his trials, and dangling his kids over balconies. Whitney went down faster than enron stock. Thank you bobby brown. U2 is still recording, and winning grammys, and touring, living up to their title of greatest band of the last 25-30 years.

  • Whitney and Michael are both still recording songs. Those headlines on MJ is old news, and Whitney Houston has made a comeback tour and Michael is starting a tour in Europe in the UK soon. Still doesn't change the fact that 1988 Grammy award of the year was a total sham.

  • So, where are their albums? And you just about proved my point by saying their working on their comeback, U2 never needed to come back. They've been consistantly great their whole career

  • Ok, you're right, the new michael jackson headlines aren't about kids, but how he has to sell his neverland ranch. He better realease a bunch of updated albums so he can keep it.

  • hows this for an idea... you go fuck off and talk about how great your child molesting michael is elsewhere... its been over 20 years and youre still crying about the 87 grammys??... holy fuck you got issues son !!

  • ...so he's livin off the past barely creating while U2 keep trying at creating new music.

  • That's a bit of a go, don't you think jthin? U2's past few releases have been reissues, and they're releasing more remasters this year - their last album was in 2004. Not comparable to MJ, but no reason to put them on a pedestal.

  • Hard to despute that. They have become a band that takes 3 years to create an album.

My reference was to Michael Jackson and what he's done in the last bit. He's taking the biggest album ever and throwing new songs on it. Awesome.

I would never say that U2 are constantly making new music. I'm referring to the claim that U2 had no right winning that award when in fact there was no one hotter at the time.

Hell, even Michael Jackson wanted to film U2 in the studio to see how they work.

  • florgamary, I completely agree with you :)

  • im sure it says 87 dick and plus witney is a drugie jacko is a pedo so dont try and put them pover u2 you silly cunt

  • How did MJ's and Whitney's Time magazine cover look again? I forget...

  • no en tiendo nada!!! pero como me gusta U2 y bono!!!!!!

  • haha, they all looked so bored when it was first announced, like "ah, jeez, now we gotta go up there, huh..."

  • dont feel bad for whitney and mj they both have one album of the yr before whitney for the bodyguard and mj for triller

but u2 deserve this one jousah tree was awesome and it sold more than mj's bad

  • I love how Larry is wearing denim

  • does anybody have the

grammy acceptance speech for Paul Simon's graceland album, 1986?

  • As much as I love Bono & U2 this album only won because of the amount of hits it had not because of it's creative & artistic merits, which I thought up till that year was what the Grammy's were all about, but boy I was wrong! That year the only record that was brilliant was Prince's Sign 'O the Times"!!!

  • Albums don't need to be ground breaking in a creative sense to be amazing. They need to speak to people and The Joshua Tree spoke to a hell of a alot of people. Joshua Tree stands the test of time much better than Prince's album and sounds as fresh today as it did than. That's what makes an amazing album. Rarely is the album of the year looked upon 20 years later the way the Joshua Tree is.

  • well said

  • agreed

  • There are two albums that continue to shine far brighter than any others from 1987 as far as how critics feel and popular opinion(sales) suggest and that's the Joshua Tree and Appetite for Destruction. Arguebale two of the greatest albums of all time. It doesn't matter how many hits these albums had or how baldy some people(not saying you) hate commercially succesful bands but JT and AFD hold up 20 years later as good, if not better than any other 20 year old album from any era ever.

  • And in closing haha I don't mean this as a shot against Prince, yes Sign O' the Times is a great album but in my opinion hasn't held up the way Joshua Tree has. Not even close actually. Prince is amazing though. I thought his Super Bowl performance last year was the best ever Super Bowl half time show while U2's in 2002 was the most emotional.

  • bull fuckin shit r u saying the joshua wasnt creative and didnt have artistic merits

  • Ganar el Grammy al mejor disco del año con BAD de Michael Jackson como nominado es todo un logro. Sin duda Joshua Tree es una de las obras maestras de la historia del ROCK.

  • sorry pacavailoes since BOY U2 never stop

  • The grammy for greatest album of all time goes to..... THE JOSHUA TREE!!

  • Larry with hands in his pockets! He is so perfect! And look at that georgeous smile!

  • Since this u2 never stop.

  • Bono looks so shy here

  • Toma!!

  • Who the fuck puts Michael Jackson's BAD or Whitney Houston on Album of the Year? Where's Prince's SIGN 'O' the TIMES or Def Leppard's HYSTERIA? Thank God THE JOSHUA TREE won, though.

  • your rage is still THAT fresh?!? LOL, did you seriously just step out of the 1987 time capsule or what?

  • el mejor album de todos los tiempos, viva the joshua tree

  • yeah U2 is the best above the rest, they give the real deal!

  • The Joshua Tree has definatly got to be one of my favorite U2 albums! They definatly deserved the Grammy.U2 ARE THE BEST!

  • joshua tree never dies!

  • joshua tree never dies!

  • Best Album ever!!!!

    The Joshua Tree

  • Being both a Prince & a U2 fan, I believe that the award went to the better album, if based only on the pure, stripped down honesty of the songs. No slight to Prince, who is a genius!

  • VIVA SAN BONO THANXXX!!

  • I prefer Achtung Baby, but Jushua Tree is def. better than MJ's Bad, still imo. Prince should have won 'album of the year' with Sign Of The Times, cuz it's such a fantastic album, the best thing he has ever done.

  • Look at how raw , honest and off the cuff they look. I still remember watching back in the day...

  • The Joshua Tree is U2's best album to date. I think it deserved the award for 'album of the year'.

  • & prince & trio were also nominated but u cut em off!

  • no one was thinking U2 woud win. ha ha MJ, prince
