I see what you mean now. Really using the hand as a "rope guide". These do sound very good and I have never rung on them. Go quite close to them each week on the way to Truro. Would like to get a quarter peal on them.

At many rural towers, people slide their hand through the rope. It's not common practice but (like the rest of the country) you are more likely to find it in rural towers.
it really doesn't feel right, ringing the back five with a tenor that weighs over a ton, because when ringing five you have to pull in a bit it makes the bells very hard work
